I was wondering, has anyone upgraded to OS X 10.11.3 beta and found that closing the MacBook Pro lid, causes it to sleep? I found this to happen when it didn't on any other El Capitan version. I know there are tools to prevent this but was curious is it was just me or 10.11.3 did change something.

That's how it is supposed to be working.

I probably could re-install everything manually. But I would lose the ability to read my TM backups, so I could as well format that hard drive and start anew. It would take a lot of time and work. So I am waiting for Steinberg to release an update to Cubase Elements, for XtraFinder dev to figure out how to put folders on top... Maybe at some point it will hurt too much and I will spend the whole day reinstalling, backing up the backups, etc. Or maybe 10.11.12 resolves all my problems ;)

I'm enjoying excellent performance from 10.11.2

Having experienced a bit of upgrade fatigue from Apple's non stop changes, coupled with version updates that often introduce new issues, I'm going to pause my upgrade activity.

Most important for the present heavy workload I have, is a stable useful reliable computer I can count on.

I felt the same way - but I upgraded anyway just out of curiosity and IMO it's my favorite OS X in 10.11.x so far. I don't use mail and other features some users report are buggy (I never have) - and I always clean boot before upgrading.

We need to keep in mind that most bugs probably differ substantially based on hardware and personal configs (I assume we're dev's here). I mean, if (this is pure speculation) Apple wanted to rewrite some OS features for handling force-touch - in beta that might cause bugs for computers without it. Same goes with graphics / CPU / GPU - I assume they're trying to tweak performance to be as efficient as possible. I also assume that optimizing macbooks is extremely complex (b/c Apple focuses so much on hardware / software integration it's probably not straight forward).

For example - they might do some epic refactoring / optimization for macbook pro's 2013/2014/2015 - release a beta - only to find out that it broke something in older devices. I dunno - that's just what I assume is happening. But it also flips in reverse (in case y'all haven't noticed) - where they focus on old support (breaking new) - during the iOS beta updates a few months ago sometimes my 5s would work way better than the 6s, so they're giving us these builds to test.

IMO it might be a good idea to post hardware type/year - and whether or not it's a clean flash - just for clarity purposes. there's just way too much variability between users here (also > 50% bugs reported I've never experienced so.. we need like a chart or something lol)

Edit: I have no idea what I'm talking about and decided so I scratched what I wrote above. I decided NOT to upgrade to any more betas because I just want a stable system. But I still believe that a majority of the issues mentioned (everywhere on this site) are hardware / configuration related.

After the series of usb beta problems with 10.11.2 betas, I am afraid of Apple betas. I used to be first on board with these but they seem to be pushing more and more experimental changes under the hood that are not readily apparent. I wonder what's up with this series....

On another matter, how do they coordinate all of these betas for ios and osx to now always come out about the same day? Do they give each team the same deadline . . ready or not .. go?

Well they have broke the USB ports on my iMac 27 5k Late 2015 again! Worked in 10.11.2 no problem. I have since left the beta program.

Can anyone tell me the best way to get 10.11.2 back on? The combo updater won't let me install over 10.11.3 beta.

Any help appreciated,

Regards

Don't want to loose other changes made since, such as iTunes and email,
A Frankenstein idea. Save your home folder on another drive. Then reformat the hard drive and reinstall El Capitan. After that then place your old home folder onto the drive. Then activate the home folder through the Accounts pane in System Preferences. Hopefully your Mail archives is recognized by the fresh Mail application. Your iTunes collection will be okay.

A side note here: Mail for El Capitan is a sore subject for me since the Mail archives folder isn't portable. The 10.11.3 beta still has the problem.

If nothing has been installed either in the main Library or in the System Library before going this way it will work, but believe me, it's not 100% foolproof.

You can restore the system and library and other system files to the former OS X 10.11.x release, but it is only for those who are familiar with the folder structure in OS X.

I think you have to approach it as a clean install and choose the correct Time Machine date to restore data from. It's better if possible to clone the entire drive when doing things like this and restore it from the recovery partition disk utility.

It seems like Apple is trying hard to change something relating to the USB buses. . .

Don't understand all the discussion here. I have the same USB issue and all I do is run the 10.11.2 installer from MAS to go back.

Is Airdrop working with the new beta?
Could someone tell me? Thanks
Doesn't work with 10.11.2,
Airdrop iOS to iOS works
Airdrop mac to mac works
Handoff iOS to Mac works
Airdrop iOS to Mac is a FAILURE!

I've never been able to get handoff to work since el capitan's first release.

I didn't remember where I read it but I did connect to my old TM backups after a clean install. It was a quick and quite simple procedure. After a search on google I found the following guide: http://hubpages.com/technology/Time-Capsule-And-Time-Machine-After-A-Clean-Install-Of-OS-X I think its the same procedure. Good luck :)

This Update is something anyone with third party installations would wanna stay very clear of. After the update the Mac would never complete a boot. I have tried anything possible and been a developer since years using pre release OS X versions since just as long. This was the last pre release that I am going to ever install from Apple for the foreseeable future. I know for a fact that I am late in that game as many of my colleagues have stopped installing those since quite a while. Apples quality is degrading on a monthly basis and I am very saddened by this fact. The more developers refraining from using pre release software the less bug reports and thus more bugs in the public release. I can't believe this is really happening and that Apple executives have not learned from the past and the days of Newton. Anyway, If you rely on your Mac and don't feel like restoring from a backup and wasting half your day restoring and the other half writing up the bugs and posting logs only to not have it fixed, I suggest that anyone hesitant to wasting time quit installing OS X Beta Software.

Fix Preview which is been broken since the initial release. PDF still render pixelated especially if you resize the window, and it still uses ridiculous amounts of RAM.

Well that kind of sucks.. I just finished reading the Ars Technica review of OSX 10.11 and was thinking of biting the bullet and finally making the move from osx 10.9.5 to the latest 10.11 aka El-Capitan but reading all the complaints im hesitant to do so.. As a user of vmware Fusion i got the latest version for El-Capitan but still running the older version 6..
Perhaps i'l wait until this new update comes out ??

I don't use VMware Fusion so I can't comment on that. If 10.11 doesn't have any benefits for your needs there is nothing wrong staying in previous OS.

I recently downgraded from 10.11.2 to 10.9.5 because of too many bugs, you might want to take a look at the 10.11 Bugs thread...

Preview no longer uses obscene amounts of RAM, but PDFs will still render fuzzy pretty often and you have to highlight text or resize the window to make to snap into focus for some reason.
