Much of todays software is geared towards large amounts of RAM and higher specifications. That applies especially to Linux. Ubuntu ten years ago was a 768mb download. Now its more than double that with all the Unity bloat. Precisely the same can be said of Linux Mint. It is ironic the only current major release that performs well on ten year old hardware is Windows 10.

I used to run Linux off a single floppy back in the day. Okay, it was a 1.44mb HD...you got me.

While I agree with you on the snappiness of the OS, frankly, Snow Leopard does not have the feature set that today's Apple ecosystem uses. But, I do wholeheartedly agree with you on the one thing that people remember about SL - snappiness - and that really, really matters a lot.
Snow Leopard not having the feature set of the modern ecosystem is a good thing.

Snow Leopard was the last release not to be infiltrated by iOS.

The iOS 6 style Launchpad and other features being introduced in Lion which was a buggy release. With each subsequent OS X/macOS release iOS has become evermore prominent.

This is one of the areas where the Windows model is better. If you want iCloud on a Windows machine you need to physically install it.

What you mention, combined with the new "Windows Subsystem for Linux" might be the reason for a massive user migration from Linux to Windows 10. There is a rather large share of Linux users that use just basic functions, and those users needs might be satisfied with the WSL.

I have a Windows 10 virtual machine on my Mac and I was pleasantly surprised with that new feature.

Same here - waiting for 10.12.6 final before I upgrade from 10.11.6

Remember unfortunately, it is all about the money and everyone (Apple and other companies) desire every year for all to upgrade...why? Money. Have to upgrade something, either hardware or mainly software. Over the last few years actually, every offering of a new OS causes at least a few used software programs to need updates in order to be compatible, including any third party software in audio or video. Instead of updating drivers for free, companies instead want you to buy new equipment or their latest offerings, including software especially. Apple wants you to update to their newest hardware in order to maximize whatever is new in their OS offering and saying, "due to security concerns...) Makes the machine (economy and tech) run...

Tried of it...so many stay on stable OS that works UNTIL really needing too...

Agree also and not because totally on taste or style (iOS vs macOS), though I too prefer not having iOS influence..Yes, Snow Leopard is dated and understandably the UI especially so since we have been eye trained by the latest Windows and MacOS offerings over the last few years to now get use to the cartoon solid colors and lack of skeyms (which I am now brain washed to prefer and are use too now to date)..

But I did some tests in comparing the last few OS's over the last few years and why is Snow Leopard completely faster on many basic everyday tasks ?!?? It is actually from a developer standpoint on the apple side embarrassing if I was one of the apple's engineers. 10 year old OS SHOULD NOT BE faster. My MacBook Pro 2010 is FASTER with Snow Leopard then some of the new Apple hardware and software...that I have!!??!!

Embarrassing to say the least...

Yeah, kind of funny.

I think they sort of stumbled upon it, when 8 was being tailored to low end tablets they made sure it could scale RAM very well. But credit where it's due, they seem to have the lightest, fastest OS right now, wouldn't have seen this coming in the Snow Leopard and Vista days.

Hope High Sierra begins a trend of reversing that.
