Apple today seeded the fourth beta of an upcoming macOS Ventura 13.1 update to developers for testing purposes, with the beta launching two weeks after Apple seeded the third macOS Ventura 13.1 beta.

Registered developers can download the beta through the Apple Developer Center and after the appropriate profile is installed, the beta will be available through the Software Update mechanism in System Settings.

With macOS Ventura 13.1, Apple has debuted the Freeform app, which is aimed at creative collaboration. It can be used for brainstorming, planning out ideas, jotting down thoughts, sketching, and other creative purposes.

Users can insert drawings, sticky notes, shapes, text boxes, photos, videos, PDFs, links, and other documents, with Freeform serving as a blank canvas. Freeform "boards" can be shared with other people and discussed over FaceTime, with updates from all participants synced to everyone in real-time.

macOS Ventura 13.1 also introduces support for an updated Home app architecture that improves performance for smart home devices, with these features also available in iOS 16.2 and iPadOS 16.2.

Endpoint Security

Known Issues

  • Third-party security products using the Endpoint Security API might lose Full Disk Access authorization and stop functioning, even though the product remains visible in System Settings. This issue doesn’t affect authorization granted via MDM. (100857507)
Workaround: Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Full Disk Access, select the security product, use the minus (-) button to remove, and then use the plus (+) button to re-add the affected security product. A system restart might be required to restore expected functionality.

Freeform

Resolved in macOS Ventura 13.1 beta 4

  • Fixed: Inserting a sticky or a file might result in an unexpected error. (100883621)

Game Controller

Resolved in macOS Ventura 13.1 beta 4

  • Fixed: GCKeyboard and GCMouse APIs might stop reporting events when the system experiences memory pressure, which can cause lost input in some games and other applications. (100736897)

SwiftUI

Resolved in macOS Ventura 13.1 beta 4

  • SwiftUI apps defined with a MenuBarExtra primary scene and a WindowGroup or Window auxiliary scene will no longer show a window for the auxiliary scene when launched. (97671037)

SwiftUI Navigation

Resolved in macOS Ventura 13.1 beta 4

  • NavigationStack on macOS supports animated transitions. Either pass the path argument to NavigationStack with an animated binding ($path.binding), or mutate the path within a withAnimation body. The transition modifier now has an effect on pushed destinations. (95714581)

How stable is it? I’d love to upgrade, but Apple’s software quality is just so bad nowadays and I can’t risk my creative workflow for a bunch of nice-to-have features.
I have no issues with my personal usage with two AS Macs. Safari with beta 3 rarely needed empty memory cache, just once observed over the last 2 weeks. It should be based on what software you are using. Everything I use with latest updates is OK. These MacOS betas have installed fairly fast.

MacOS 13.1 dev beta 4
  • Safari Version 16.2 (18614.3.7.1.3)
  • System Firmware Version: 8419.60.44 (M1 based Macs)
  • Darwin Kernel Version 22.2.0: Mon Nov 14 23:07:13 PST 2022; root:xnu-8792.61.2~6/RELEASE_ARM64_T8103 arm64
MacOS 13.1 dev beta 3
  • Safari Version 16.2 (18614.3.6.11.2)
  • System Firmware Version: 8419.60.44 (M1 based Macs)
  • Darwin Kernel Version 22.2.0: Tue Nov 8 21:15:02 PST 2022; root:xnu-8792.60.55.131.1~1/RELEASE_ARM64_T8103 arm64

What is this? Could you please explain or provide a link to an explanation?
on the last Beta before this one. make an alias in Finder to an app. Click on the alias and it opens a terminal window instead of the app. reverted to the prior beta and problem went away.

well do you think the OS is crashing just by sitting there ? or when you run any app ? or having kernal panics plugging devices in or out ? of course its not. the OS itself is good.
OTH Freeform is unusable in beta3. maybe its fixed and testable in beta4. however that has nothing to do with any other apps or your "creative workflow"

Hopefully it solves the issue with sd cards mounting. With the current version only one sd card will mount at a time.

I just wish they would fix the iCloud terms and conditions bug. I get tired of it popping up all day long to agree.

doesn't do that for me. Can you isolate what is going on more, besides just saying 'bug"? I have iCloud Drive on, iCloud email off, synching on, two-factor on. no problems. Sounds like it is trying to log you in or something

LOL, not even close. I have been using Ventura throughout developer beta, and seriously no issues. Sure you read about a small bug here and there, but nothing as bad as Windows. I'd never go back. Very pleased with Ventura, even the betas are uber stable

I am not experiencing any issues, no idea what you are talking about
Maybe an M1 issue? It's not just me. I have seen several reports of the app alias open terminal window on the prior beta. I'll try this new one and see if it happens again.

Since I installed these last betas on my MBP and my iPad, Universal Control stopped working. The devices are even connected by USB C. Anyone having the same issue?

PB testers check to see if the MacOS 13.1 beta 4 PB is now available. Seeing other PB releases now available OTA.
Indeed it is available as a public beta. They released it only a few hours after the developer beta. It's usually a day after.

Anyway what it means for developers is that the full installer is already available. Usually you have to wait for the public beta to be released before you can get the full installer.

The full installer is also available for the Monterey 12.6.2 beta 3.

Since this beta 4 shows the Darwin kernel/system FW with little change, the next release will be a RC, so that's why this is coming out on the same day. The RC should be available to both same day next week. ;)
