Baby steps.

Something like this is pretty hindered more by politics than technological holdup. I'm actually very surprised something like this wasn't held internally until it can be launched with a bang (e.g., "Look at all of the partners!", "Check out this cool feature") and sans development hiccups.

Maybe it has to do with Apple nowadays. Maybe it has to do with the fact that something like this seems to have been in the works unsuccessfully for awhile now. Either way, the roll out is very Google-ish for something that's supposed to be a primary focus device.

I wonder if that TV app will integrate with the new DirecTV Now service...

From the news I have read on other sites DIRECTV Now currently does not have SSO rights.

Networks and affiliates are notoriously stubborn when it comes to retransmission rights.

So many people complaining baout the ATV4

they should try using it outside of USA, then they would know what a POS it really can be. But thankfully there are tons of really garbage apps, some overpriced controllers, and no siri to help with everything.

What I don't understand is why does the TV app support HBO Now but not HBO Go? That makes no sense whatsoever.

not gonna lie, that TV app is a POS

They need to offer a settings section. I would prefer to omit all iTunes store related media so i can just see what i can watch based on the apps on my ATV i already have downloaded or subscriptions i already pay for such as hulu and netflix

what makes no sense is why HBO needed to have 2 separate apps that essentially do the same thing. Just either let me authenticate based on Cable TV subscription or let me buy the HBO direct subscription right from one app

Good point. I don't see a point for two Apps either when other Pay TV services do just fine with one app.

What we got:
A place where I can track shows I watch, provided I don't watch any shows on Netflix, HBO Go, or any of the countless other networks that aren't supported, and assuming I'm ok having to navigate through a ton of promotional garbage that feels like my old cable box interface I abandoned years ago.
Netflix, HBO, Starz, CBS All Access, and more are supported. Agree about the promotional junk. For example I never buy from iTunes, yet it is all over the app and can't be hidden. We need a screen where we can select which services we want to see. And support Plex!!! But that is up to the Plex community - the app makers must support the TV app. I think eventually most video apps will support the TV app and Siri search.

Has anyone else been having issues with the Sling TV app in the latest beta updates? Every time I open the Sling app and select a channel to watch, the app crashes. I've reached out to Sling support and they tell me to delete the app, hard reset the device and reinstall to clear the cache, but this isn't working either...Just curious if anyone else was having a similar issue

YES..... same here .. and those crazy stupid tech support not willing to listen to me .... I

its an known issue with last tvos update ... some channel is sling will play but most of them will not ... it will force quit the app and bring you back to home screen ...

I am done with sling .... signed up for direct TV now today prepay for 3 months and another Apple TV will be shipped .. which is not bad deal at all...

in regards to the politics part, yes that's pretty accurate. Cable providers (Comcast, etc.) don't like this, it will kill their proprietary system. Many cable
providers actually use Comcast's Xcalibur platform. Licensing is a pain, but hopefully for the sake of money at the very least they'll realize they can benefit from tvOS.

Agreed. Utterly useless.

Apple you had one job!

What we wanted:
A place to track all the shows I WATCH, and only those I watch, so I can easily see when new episodes are available and watch them with a single click, without having to parse through a bunch of unwanted and annoying promotional content.

well said.

Thanks for the well thought out and detailed analysis. Truly helpful to those of us wanting user feedback.

I've been trying it for the past week or so, and every single time I managed to find something in the TV app, I could have done it in about 1/4th of the clicks without it.
They could have done it so much better

This is today's Apple in a nutshell. Their products are becoming very similar to products from other companies that I tried to avoid over the past 20 years. All that while making the products so thin it compromises its performance.

Yes, same with me. Haven't found a fix.

That's right, I forgot to mention the fact that the TV app has no way of tracking watched TV shows for individuals, something which isn't exactly rocket science and which Netflix figured out years ago. Worse yet, if you share an account login with family members using separate Apple TVs, the TV app doesn't differentiate between favorite and watched shows across different devices. I can't believe they released this thing as-is. It's an embarrassment not even worthy of a "beta" or "hobby" label.

Isn't the point of a beta to get feedback like this before releasing it to the public?

Are you speaking from first hand experience or just based on what you know about it? I'm looking forward to getting the icloud movie library out of iTunes. It does look pretty worthless I will admit. I wish they would just put out a "videos" app like on iOS and leave the curating up to service providers.

yep, I opened a support case with Sling and they basically told me to that they won't help. I understand they don't support betas but it would have been nice to at atleast hear that they will look into it. I signed up for Directv now and will no longer be a sling customer.
The developers over at Sling must be either spread too thin or shooting from the hip. It took them weeks after MacOS Sierra came out to fix a major issue with the Mac app. Tech support had no idea what I was talking about when I reported the problem. I don't think they bother doing any testing on betas.

I like the UI and(!!) the remote of the 2nd / 3rd atv so much more. Siri remote with touch is crap as is the new UI. Scrolling with "swipe/swish/swipe/swipe" sucks. Unfortunately I have my old atv to my dad and he is not giving it back.

Yep - had the same issues and went back-forth with them for over a week. After receiving the bill and not having access, I cancelled. Signed up for PlayStation Vue for $35 and it's sooooooo sooooo sooooo much better than sling.
