If Akamai could handle it why do I never get more then 5mbps from Apple's dev downloads at work? My connection is fine. They just limit speeds or are overloaded.

Not sure but I've never had that problem from home (30mbps at home)

With 73,000 servers (http://www.akamai.com/html/technology/index.html) it's not going to be that they're overloaded. A 25Mbps connection does not equal 25MBps downloads, I'm presuming you get the difference there for a start.

I've never downloaded a file from the dev centre at less than 1.0MBps on my 10Mbps connection. Problem seems to be at your end and not Akamai's

Looking forward to Xcode 4 once it's released! I do have to wonder, though, why it got pulled so quickly. Must have been a goof-up on Apple's end.

Maybe they took it down to remove the 10.7 requirement from the readme file :D

I might be wrong, but I wouldn't use Akamai for huge file downloads...

Knowing Apple, they probably wouldn't release a major xcode release without a major new product and software release. Lines up nicely with the current iPad 2 rumors. Hmmmmm....

Any major differences between xcode 3? I'm guessing this is a step towards more seamless ios development?

Probably the biggest overhaul xcode has gotten so far. A big feature is the integrated interface editor

Yes. They combined xcode and interface builder. There are several more MAJOR differences making it more seamless.

I've been using the XCode 4 Preview releases since the very first one. I've been using preview #6 since it has been released. I'll be honest - I would be very very surprised if they were releasing a GM seed to us already. There are still a lot of outstanding issues with preview #6. For instance there is still no support for Interface Builder plugins. If you want to work with a Nib that has a UI element from a plugin you still have to open the Nib in Interface Builder 3. There are other issues and bugs as well. I'm looking forward to the next preview release, but again I truly doubt we are getting a GM seed already. I was expecting to see the GM seed nearer to OS X 10.7.

A striking thought:
What is, this was actually XCode for Lion. You know, the one found on the OS X install disc. They accidentally but it up instead of the Snow Leopard one, so they took it down. I wonder if someone did actually download it, then maybe it could be compared to the Snow Leopard one, and see the differences.

I'm more excited about the xcode4 than about the iPad2 ... I used the beta for a while (earlier versions) and it looked fantastic and finally IB integrated, much more modern but was too buggy at the time - I stopped updating to later betas, but can't wait for the final release.

Actually, yes, I did get to download it. It's installing right now. However, I don't think that I can give you any details. ;)

You must have spotted it at just the right time, then... lucky you (or unlucky, if the build you downloaded was pulled because of a serious bug). I'm not surprised that developer builds of Xcode 4 are under wraps right now - that's typical Apple policy, and something I've learned to expect from them. That said, I have to wonder what other goodies Apple's put in Xcode. Guess I'll find out when the final version's released (or when I make the jump to Lion).

Well, I've only seen the "About Xcode and iOS SDK.pdf" file so far (still installing...) but it looks promising. :) There are some things in it which I've really wanted to see :)

This is good news - makes me all the more ready for whenever Apple decides to release it. As a side note, I'm currently debating the merits of joining the Mac developer program... I definitely won't join today (I need to learn Obj-C 2.0 first, heh heh) but I intend to sign up sometime. Perhaps when I purchase my next Mac - that's the timing I'm leaning towards right now.

Looking forward to XCode 4, it will be interesting to see whether Apple has fully moved over to GCC-LLVM with the development of Lion given that they made it the default compiler for the XCode 4 development builds.

XCode 4 does look really nice...except that it dropped support for a key third-party program. My company would probably stop developing for iOS if Apple ever started requiring XCode 4 because of this.

Excuse me but *WHAT* 'key third-party program' are you referring to? No use making statements without actually pointing out what is missing or causing problems.
