I installed my first beta today. I’m happy and experiencing no issues so far.

The groupings in the App Library need some work. It feels like almost everything ended up in Entertainment, Productivity or Lifestyle.

I'm surprised that there's so much confusion around the public vs. developer beta numbering.

But Apple could end the confusion (I think) if it dropped "developer" or "public" from the name and just called them "beta 1", "beta 2", etc., and made it clear that beta 1 will only be available to developers.

Thanks for posting, this is really helpful.

Though I find it odd that Whathifi would expect the spatial audio feature to come to Apple TV. The TV itself is immobile, and the Apple TV unit cannot tell when a viewer is turning his head. And if it could, what would happen if two or more people are watching, and one turns his head to the right and another turned her head to the left? The Apple TV might explode! Maybe that's why Apple isn't enabling the feature on Apple TV, because of the fire hazard! ;-)

That's not how i recall the presentation at WWDC. They did not mention having to use glasses at all. I may not be remembering this correctly but when i heard about this feature i was pretty psyched. I want to say it's limited to the Air Pod Pros and the article below says it is. But it also says the current Apple TV 4K will not support this feature. Guess it will only be through an iPhone or iPad. Hope that changes in future Apple TVs if this is true.

I found this summary at WhatHiFi:

During its typically slick, but untypically pre-recorded WWDC 2020 keynote briefing, Apple announced something that really piqued our interest: spatial audio.

Coming (along with a number of other new features) to the AirPods Pros this autumn, spatial audio is designed to deliver surround sound and 3D audio via your headphones. It’s basically Apple’s take on Dolby Atmos for Headphones and Sony’s upcoming PS5 3D Audio.

Apple’s spatial audio has a unique feature, though: it not only tracks your head movement using accelerometers and gyroscopes in the AirPods Pro in order to position the sound accurately, it also tracks the position of the iPhone or iPad that you’re watching on, so that sound is also placed relative to the screen. This means that even if you turn your head or reposition your device, dialogue will still be anchored to the actor on the screen.

Apple spatial audio will be included in a firmware update coming to AirPods Pro this autumn. You’ll also need the new iOS 14 or iPadOS 14, which should be released around the same time. All of these updates will be provided free of charge.

It’s also worth noting that Dolby Atmos is only available on Apple devices launched since 2018. While you don’t need Atmos for spatial audio, the two working together will likely produce the best results.

On the software side of things, as long as an app supports 5.1, 7.1 and/or Atmos, it will work with spatial audio. That already includes apps such as Vudu, HBO Go, Hulu and Amazon Prime Video. Stereo content can also be converted to spatial audio. All a developer needs to do is allow stereo spatialisation via an Apple plug-in.

Here’s something of a surprise: spatial audio is not coming to the Apple TV 4K, or at least not in the first instance. That seems odd to us. True, AirPods are more often connected to a portable device than an Apple TV, but spatial audio seems a perfect way for those people without a surround sound system to get a taste of cinema-style sound while watching on their lounge TV.

Apple’s not explained why the Apple TV 4K isn’t getting spatial audio. The only reason we can think of is that it’s not powerful enough. The A10X chip in the Apple TV 4K dates back to 2017. Could it be that it doesn’t have the processing muscle for spatial audio? It’s possible, but that would also presumably preclude all pre-2018 iPhones and iPads from getting spatial audio. If this proves to be the case, it could be the best indication yet that a new, more powerful Apple TV is on the way.

Much buggier experience coming from the first public beta. I’ve had more bugs in first hour than I did in however long the original public beta has been out on iPhone 11 Pro Max, and will help by filing reports.

Not sure if others are having this issue, but when making calls and using AirPods Pro, I have to cycle from speaker to AirPods before the voice starts coming through AirPods. Oddly, the ringing tone when calling out will come through.

Anybody else having an issue with their SIM on iPadOS? Updated and now getting all the errors: No Service, No SIM, or Invalid SIM.

said about every iOS version. Ever.

The beta is unusually stable this year. iOS 13's first betas would crash at least once every other day for me and a lot of features weren't even working. This year the stability was felt from beta 1 and I've only had 3 or 4 crashes total since the initial beta release. I've had stable betas in the past like iOS 10, but nothing like this year.

They are in sync at this point, so shouldn't really be much confusion.

The text keyboard disappears randomly on DB4. Keep that in mind if you decide to install PB 4. You will probably be affected.
From what I've seen in some posts is that it might be related in some way to having cross-fade transitions enabled when reduce motion is enabled in accessibility settings.

I have reduced motion off. Where is cross-fade located?
It's under the reduce motion settings when reduce motion is enabled. Not sure if enabling/disabling that is what affects it, but saw it referenced in a few posts in some other beta threads related to the keyboard issue.

Thanks for the suggestion. I had both turned off so, I guess that isn’t the culprit. I rebooted my phone a little while ago and had trouble unlocking my SIM because the keyboard option disappeared on me. I had to reboot again and finally got it entered correctly.

Something perhaps most of you thought of, but I didn't. On my 2015 MBP I had the display sleep turned on (power adapter setting) for 30 minutes. You guessed it; while downloading the beta, my display went momentarily dark and I quickly tapped on the trackpad to wake it up, but the damage was done. I did not have "put hard drive to sleep when possible" checked, but it brought my download to a pause. In the feedback notes this is mentioned, and sure enough the "completed" download was...not complete and error with a "%" file is missing message and the OS could not install. So I had to re-download with the display set to never sleep and I'm just sending a heads up to anyone like me who didn't think to keep the display "awake". Big Sur is now up and running and I'm typing to you from the MBP.

Definitely buggier than beta 3. Will be compiling a list and submitting to Apple. Will also back up and do a clean install to see if it fixes it first. I like beta testing as a way to contribute/participate/give back rather than complain about it.

Since I heard about what's to come, I have no choice but to get the public beta for iOS. But I'll probably downgrade and upgrade the second iOS 14 is live.

I still don't get the benefit of spatial audio/head tracking. I can see how it might be a cool tool for games, but what other benefit does it bring?

Maybe there is “one more thing” that incorporates it

EDIT: To clarify, I’m aware of the WWDC explanation/simulated demo... I’m just wishfully thinking.

Having camera issues that didn’t exist on the three previous DB. Camera won’t finish launching except for portrait and pano. Third party apps that use the camera work fine. Have submitted to Apple.

Also having the issue where the on screen Keyboard disappears. Want to be able to reproduce with screen recording before submitting to Apple.

Noticed all my headphones with the H1 chip have been removed. My daily drivers are Powerbeats pro and I had to repair them 3 times. AirPods, beats solo 3 wireless, two pairs of powerbeats 3 wireless all missing.
I haven’t seen anyone else mention this. I’m fairly certain it’s software and not hardware since my non-Apple/non-h1 Bluetooth devices are still saved.
