We've received word that Apple has released the third beta version of iOS 4.2 and the associated Software Development Kit for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch to developers. The release comes two weeks after the release of the second beta version.

There is no word yet on changes included in the new version, but we'll update with any significant revelations.

I wish Apple would just release its software sooner. The current stuff is as buggy as ever, so why not slap us with new features more quickly?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C5101c Safari/6533.18.5)

I'm looking forward to installing this tonight.

Looking forward to giving beta3 a spin tonight.
Should be pretty good considering beta2 was nearly bug free

Sweet! I was hoping beta3 would come out tomorrow, but I can deal with it coming out a day early. :D

Jeez, with the 4.1 jailbreak not available to Mac users yet, I'm thinking I may just wait for the 4.2 jailbreak now.

Can someone test iTunes the 10.1 beta to see if it fixes the podcast syncing issue? With the current iTunes version this is broken. The played position (where you are in the podcast) isn't syncing correctly from iTunes to iPhone. Sometimes it syncs and sometimes it doesn't. Also, a brand new podcast will sometimes sync the played position to somewhere in teh middle even though you've never played it in iTunes or the iPhone yet. For someone who probably consumes more podcast content than television, this bug is KILLING ME.

For me Beta 2 was pretty slow. Changing apps through multitasking was sliggish.. I've used Beta 3 for about 10 minutes and it seems a lot smoother.

I also had a crash to the springboard when going into MobileMe settings, but I haven't experienced that yet.

I'm curious if this includes any fixes for the known USB intermittent playback issues with headunits.

1: I'm not a dev, but I had no problem loading iOS 4 GM on my phone back then. Will I be able to download and install this beta without being a registered developer, or is that only for GM releases?

2: Do I have to delete everything in my phone to upgrade to this beta release as I did when I upgraded to iOS 4 GM?

Are those around 15 text message sounds new or not? Has been a long time since I last looked into that specific menu.

As far as I know, these beta's are all device locked using the dev provisioning tool.

Beta 1 and b2 were not locked on the iPad, you could use command+update in iTunes 10.1 to upgrade an iPad without all the dev BS.
