Im not surprised but still Im REALLY thinking iTunes is gonna need a new name soon. iTUNE's doesnt really fit anymore.

I think iTunes will return to being primarily a media organizer.. mobile me essentially means that syncing in iTunes is no longer necessary. That's one step away from iTunes...

It does look that way, which will allow for less syncing over time, expect for updating our media files and apps.

new iTunes Name

Its more like iPortaltoyouripod/iPhone iTunes is used to sync everything to your iPhone and iPod and such. Like idk its not a bi deal I honestly dont care im just thinking maybe apple got carried away I mean when it started out they thought "ok ituns will sync the music its that simple" then it went into "well I guess iTunes can sync photos too... its media like music I guess" next thing we know "ok I guess if we're already syncing music and photos what harm can vidoes be?"

Now we at the point where it syncs your ENTIRE computer.

I thought that prior to iPhone. I like iMedia.

Wait..if you hook up your phone to this pre-release itunes 7.7 is it downloading/installing a version of firmware 2.0 on there or is it just different tabs/options in the display there

I agree, but iTunes is too much of a brand name at this point to change it.

It's a well known trademark and brand name. The origins mean nothing. We don't change Coke to Cafke now that cocaine is no longer the make stimulant. The only time you should rebrand a name is if the product has failed. Just to look to MS' attempt at branding music and how many times they've switched names.

Beyond that, I'm sure Apple never expected iTunes and iPod to have become as popular as it did and would probably have chosen a different name if they could go back.
Windows Media Player is the software. Zune is the hardware. Playsforsure is the DRM-like technology. They've hardly ever changed names.

Downloading...

Hopefully this SDK version doesn't kill my code. Last version was good, adding only like two audio methods.

Nice research! </sarcasm>

• PlayForSure isn't DRM-like, it's DRM.

• Zune is a rebranding and new case and firmware for the Toshiba Gigabeat. We don't really expect a SW company to make reliable HW now, do we?

• VC-1 is a rebranding of WM9

Some of those are more than just a rebranding, they are also codec, firmware and/or hardware changes, but the original point still remains: MS had a failed product so changing its name is the only way to re-market it. As we can see, it isn't working, but it's the only option they had. As for successful products, you don't change the brand name. There is a reason why Windows and Office had maintained their name for so long.

The fact that you aren't aware of any previous name is proof of why rebranding works on those not paying attention, even if the new packaging still isn't desirable. iTools to .Mac to Mobile Me is an example of Apple trying to rebrand a lackluster product.

Are there any actual bug fixes with this iTunes 7.7 for the Windows client?

No windows version released yet - as it's intended purely for developers using the iPhone SDK / iPhone OS (which is only available for OS X at the moment), there wouldn't be much point in releasing a windows version at the moment...

Hey I was the first to ask for a share (i think cmac you even copy/pasted it haha)! Where's my love?

I'm surprised it hasnt hit any torrent sites or anything...all of the other firmware betas are out there.

I wish they'd just update iTunes today...

ditto :)

This iTunes 7.7 does allow you to install 2.0 on both iPhone and iPod Touch, correct?

I doubt it - only developers in the iPhone Dev Program have access to firmware 2.0 at this point - they won't be serving it up from the apple servers until it goes live on July 11th. And the iPod touch, of course, has a $9.95 fee for the firmware.

I downloaded the SDK but the disk image failed to mount and won't open. Can i repair it from the OS X disk?

thanks
