Apple Seeds iPhone Firmware 2.2 Beta 1

Since 2.1, Mail.app does not recognize new mails in imap folders. I have a bunch of server side filters running. Now I have to look into every folder in order to see if any of them contains new mail. I hope Apple will fix this in 2.2.

Otherwise, here's one more vote for copy and paste.

a little box just rose up on the screen that said "press thumb here" - then it would read from an encrypted password store and put it in for you.

Wait a minute. The next time I'm being mugged they'll not only want my iPhone but also my thumbs. :D

I'd like to see some simple biometric functionality enabled, if possible. Do you think this would be possible? The touchscreen is extremely sensitive, but is it sensitive enough to read a unique thumbprint?

I don't think the screen works like a scanner, it can only sense pressure.

Can we please get some MMS (picture messaging), i mean come on, even low end phones have that ability. Step it up apple, i dont want to use a 3rd party app to picture message.

MMS is a useless, akward, incompatible technical solution. E-mail is much better - and usage statistics of MMS show huch few people actually use it.

I only have numbers for Germany, but I guess in other countries it's a similar situation:

SMS sent per person per year: 300
MMS sent per person per year: 1.5

This clearly shows that MMS is plain dead - so I don't think that you'll ever see MMS on iPhone.

Hope the update fixes Safari

I hope the release fixes Safari. I get complete crashes up to a dozen times or more a day. Not sure if it is linked to certain web content or not. Come to think of it, Safari on my Macbook is pretty unstable lately too.... kind of reminds me of the bad old days with Windows. I left windows for stability reasons too. I had hoped OS X would be different. Hey does the new Google phone have true bluetooth in STEREO?

Here in the States MMS use is quite healthy. Dated November of last year here is a page I found; MMS Starts to Take Off.

It states a few numbers, one showing MMS Subscribers (users) had risen 41% by the end of June 2007, an increase from 42 million users to 97 million.

Other figures and estimates as listed in the page linked to;

The analyst group says during the three months ending in August:
  • 36% of those aged 18 to 24 sent an MMS
  • 26.9% of those aged 25 to 35 sent an MMS
  • 27.2% of those aged 13 to 17 sent an MMS
"Gartner Research Director Tole Hart, who thinks most of the interoperability issues have been resolved, is forecasting there will 20 billion MMS messages sent in 2011. That compares to numbers from the CTIA that 2.7 billion MMS messages were sent in 2006 and 1.1 billion in 2005."

I wanted to find some more simplified numbers comparing the number of SMS messages sent in comparison to MMS but my Google-Fu seems to be lacking today.

Edit to Add #1: SMS and MMS Statistics gathered within the U.K.

Edit to Add #2: MMS on Wikipedia

ditto, i am really wanting that copy and paste

Those numbers show that in the UK, MMS usage can be compared to the usage in Germany. My numbers give a SMS:MMS ratio of 200, the numbers on turk.internet.com have a ratio of 140.

The US numbers you mentioned don't say anything:

"36% of those aged 18 to 24 sent an MMS"

Ok, 36% of those people sent "an" MMS - so perhaps just one, perhaps more. I doubt the real numbers of sent SMS and MMS per year in the US is much different from Europe.

Besides - if MMS was really so popular, do you really think Apple would just drop it?

MMS is very practical actually, many people still do not have the ability of a fully compatible internet/e-mail on their phone, so by having picture messaging it would be huge. A lot of people here in the states(well a lot of my friends) still like MMS/Picture messaging. So i say MMS is much needed.
