In Japan... iPhone e-mail is weird, and needs to be fixed because SMS does not exist in Japan! Push e-mail is just... the way to go.

Anyway what happens. You don't have Push e-mail in Japan (although they adopted it for all phones about 10 years ago and never had SMS to multiple cariers... only to people on your carier).

When you get an e-mail the fact that you've received an e-mail is "Pushed" to you, and your e-mail is checked instantly (although it's IMAP e-mail). Big problem... there's no vibration or sound!!!

This would be okay if SMS was mainstream in Japan like it is in America... but nobody uses SMS (or knows the acronym) in Japan, so it's confusing, and feature-poor... just for Japan. Why can't they fix this? You get a pop-up saying "you've got mail!" but no sound or vibration!

I don't leave my phone lying around anywhere! Keep it in your pocket for god's sake. ;)

Just kidding. That would be a good option for many people, I'm sure. Where the heck do you leave your phone lying around unattended, though?

well, if you REALLY want to know.... on my desk when I go to the bathroom or go get some iced tea, etc (I usually work from home so no one is gonna steal it while I'm away); in my car when I step out to pump gas; on the charger overnight; and probably a few other occasions.

Waht would be great in 2.2

Here's what I would love in the next firmware upgrade
- slightly larger screen
- 2x5 watts stereo speakers at the bottom of the device
- Audio AND video WIFI streaming to any standard TV or stereo system
- self-charging solar screen
- and if possible, GPS improvement for a turn-by-turn GPS apps

Feasible?

The items highlighted in bold would require a hardware update and as such will not come with a software update :)

ouuups

Oups, I'm sorry...

I forgot to mention my previous mail was ironic...

Thank you for your answer!

Yeah you're a little wrong on this one.
Firmware = Base Software
Hardware = The Actual iPhone/iPod/Parts, moving parts etc.

Um, wasn't he saying that he would prefer MacRumors to be about Macs?

...and hinting that stories about a beta seed of phone firmware are just too far away from MACs.

A new release of phone firmware maybe, but rumours of betas? Focus, guys - you have a phone forum for this stuff.

pls fix safari it crashes too often on 2.1 It just crashed logging in MR and typing this post is laggy. No crashes on 2.1.x

Has anyone else spotted the "Load Earlier Messages" option in the text app? I just saw it today! That's a pretty nice feature if you ask me because I rarely, if ever, delete text conversations so they get really, really long but it can get a little annoying to scroll up when you have thousands of lines of conversation.

I just hadn't seen anybody mention this so I thought I'd point it out!

I agree. I saw this on page one, read it and thought: "Jeez what are they going to talk about - there's no meat to this article... it'll just be a want/bitch session" Lo and behold, 7 pages/150+ comments later, that appear to be so. No info about the original article, just a list of want and complaints by users.

I feel this should be on an iphone page somewhere.

A simple new feature they could add to appease me, and I'm sure a lot of other people like me, is the ability to set a background image on the springboard. That's the only reason I decided to jailbreak my iPhone previously, not for the apps but for the wallpaper. Sad, huh? ...

You have to understand, this is Steve Jobs we are talking about. Since coming back to Apple, he wants everything his way.
Now in some aspects this is great, in others, not so great.

Uniformity. Jobs is a perfectionist. He helped to design the iPhone UI to look and function like Apple.
Allowing users to set their own wallpapers is 'tacky'. It doesn't fall in with Apple.

I doubt we'll ever see this feature.

One thing I do want to see is VIDEO RECORDING.
Surely this is a software fix?

We all know the camera in iPhone and iPhone 3G is capable of video,
so Why is the official functionality not here yet?

Hmmm.

The site name is "MacRumors", but most of the stories seem to be about telephones and music players and Microsoft ads.

The directors need to re-examine their focus. Too much crap about phones, IMO.

Keep the other stuff in the side panels where it belongs - get rid of the Igadget crap.

Hmm, last I checked the company that makes Macs also makes music players and phones now. With them not being Apple Computer any longer and becoming Apple, Inc I think the site is still appropriate. :)

people complain there are problems with the phone so apple releases updates to fix them and improve the phone. then people complain that there are too many updates. just a bunch of board babies, always crying and whining about something.

Yeah, NO kidding...

Sure, why not! Apple is already altering some features on the phone specifically for Japan. The Ringer Mute switch does NOT mute the camera sound, because of all the problems with upskirt shots from the perverts over there.

QFT!

Even if you knew nothing about Apple's internal machinations, you could tell pretty easily that it was being run by a single, very dominant personality - the way there is an insane level of attention to some details; and then other areas are utterly ignored.

Such as the way we've had how many photo and home video demos at Macworlds now? Photo apps. Photos on the iPod. Home videos. Home videos on the iPod. Photos on the web. Home videos on the web. Home videos on DVD. Photos on the iPhone. Home videos on the iPhone.

But games? Steve mopes off stage and someone else gives the demo.

How do we know that? I look at how long it takes after I hit the button for the 'camera' app to show me the picture it took, and think 'who all wants 2 spf video!'

I would like Safari to crash just a bit less, please. It would be so nice to be able to write this post with less than two crashes ( this is my seventh attempt). Feels a bit like iWindows Me now.

Safari never crashes for me, you guys have been doing naughty things I imagine.

Just because there's a fancy animation doesn't mean it's not possible to get full motion video. Jailbreakers have had video recording for a while now. Also, what do you think it's doing before you take the photo? I see full moving video in real time on my screen... if you don't see that, then your iPhone is broken.

It's really weird how difference peoples' experiences are on a simple, standard, single-tasking system like the iPhone.

My Safari hasn't crashed once in 2 months. Similarly, I've had (I think) 1 crash in Mail, whereas my boss can hardly fetch email without it hanging indefinitely; and we're both using the same mail-server.
