What site are you having issues with? I've had zero issues watching videos online in Safari on my M1 MBP, Intel Mac mini, or my iPhone or iPad.
I have an M1 Mac mini, and ever since upgrading to Sonoma, Safari freezes on any site with videos, whether YouTube, Vimeo, or news sites. I've tried clearing my cache and history, which made no difference. I have no trouble playing videos in Firefox and Chrome, so this is something particular to Safari.

Update: I spent a couple hours on the phone with Apple technical support. They went through everything they could think of (deleting preferences, reinstalling the OS, going into safe mode, etc.). Nothing made any difference. They were flummoxed. They logged Safari's behavior and are having higher-level techs look into it.

I'd test this in a new user account that doesn't have any Safari extensions enabled. It's definitely not a widespread problem.

macOS Sonoma 14.1 includes updates for the Music app, introducing an option to favorite songs, albums, artists, and more, plus there's a new Coverage section in System Settings for keeping track of AppleCare+. No other major new additions have been found in the beta as of yet, and Apple's release notes don't add much.

Typical Apple. 🤦‍♂️ Since they’re giving Music.app some attention, could you please check if they fixed the Recently Added view they just borked, or at the very least provided us with a workable alternative?

I would check for any Extensions you might have installed. Definitely not something wide spread. I wish there was a better way to “refresh” Safari, like how Firefox has that option if you haven’t used it in a while.

I did , in two different accounts. Same result. I was also on the phone with Apple tech support. They had me reinstall Sonoma. That didn’t fix the problem either.

I have no extensions installed. The Apple tech went through my Safari settings and couldn’t find anything unusual. It’s really bizarre.

All it does is match your background image. Use a dark background and you'll get a dark menu bar.
The idea of dark mode is not about using a dark background but having dark overlays / windows, even when you use a colorful or white background.
They also matched the background for the menu bar (actually they just add some blur effect) in Ventura and before but added some dark tint to it when you use Dark Mode. It’s the same thing for windows, the dock, overlays - just for the menu bar the dark tint is missing now. Seems like a bug to me, not sure why just for the menu bar they would intentionally decide to drop the dark mode.

There really should be a "Release Candidate" option in the beta updates settings for people who just need to test stuff on the RCs before everyone gets them.

There’s issues that crop up in an RC that weren’t a problem at all during all the betas. That’s just how it is.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a UI option to correctly delete the downloaded video screensavers in Sonoma rather than manually deleting the video files. I believe this was an option during beta but disappeared from the official release?

I'm not seeing any difference in the behavior of the menu bar between Ventura and Sonoma. Darker backgrounds get a menu bar with the dark tint and light background get the light tint. Dynamic wallpapers will change the menubar color with the wallpaper, just like in Ventura, but the default in Sonoma are the video landscapes which have a static menubar color. I just see the menu bar as an extension of the background in terms of visuals, so it makes sense to me that it works in this way.

You could simply ignore all the beta updates until the RC comes out, then install that. I believe the RC is a full install so doesn't require any previous betas to be installed.

Are there full installers for RCs? It's complicated. A simple yes or no will not do. An essay is required.

The older systems RCs (ventura and monterey) have been getting full installers. Sonoma RCs have been getting ipsws which are not really full installers but can nevertheless be used to restore apple silicon macs. Sonoma betas have been getting full installers.

When 14.1, 13.6.1 and 12.7.1 are publicly released they will get full installers.

The build numbers for the public releases may or may not concur with the latest RC build numbers.

When the 14.1 is publicly released and if the build number concurs with that of the current sonoma RC, then the full installer for that public release will also be the full installer for that RC.

However it might not be.

Confused?

An RC might not be the same as the public release. But it might be.

As we have seen with ventura and monterey there are many RCs before public release, not just 1.

Sonoma might only get 1. But it may get more than 1 before public release.

So relying on RCs on the assumption that it will be that which is publicly released is folly.

They are really just a glorified beta - one apple hopes is close to being appropriate for public release.

But it might not be.

So if you are assuming it will be the one which is going to be pubicly released, the advice is simple.

Don't.

With dark mode the menubar should look the same as the dock. In Ventura it did, in Sonoma it doesn’t.

The menubar in Sonoma does not change at all if you switch between light and dark mode. That’s the issue.

Click a menu in the menu bar and that menu uses dark mode, but the bar on top doesn’t. It looks weird as heck.

To make sure the menu bar color matches the dark (or light) mode, and not the color of the desktop image, you can try going into System Settings > Accessibility > Vision > Display and toggle "Reduce transparency" to on.

What issues are we talking about specifically?
There is a bug introduced in Sonoma where occasionally if you try to drag a window from one display to the other, when you reach the second display the window collapses into the Stack view (the little 3D angled tiny window that would appear along the left hand side of stage manager) making it impossible to complete the move from one display to another without disabling and re-enabling Stage Manager. Wasn’t an issue on Ventura so it’s pretty annoying as someone who pretty much only uses multiple displays on a daily basis and pretty concerning that Stage Manager is already collecting bugs after only a single year.

Others on Reddit reporting similar issues.

Can someone help me out and test an issue for me? I've long used a folder in the Photos App to randomly cycle thru Desktop Wallpaper, and now when I select any Photos App folder, it changes to the Default Sonoma Wallpaper instead. I'm wondering if this is just me or happening to others, as well? I have no issues selecting a Finder Folder to use, just not a Photos App folder.

Ever since I have been on Sonoma, my Bluetooth connectivity has stunk! I hope this addresses that issue.

Can anyone tell me if this update fixes the volume indicator bug? I haven't been able to see the percentage in settings since updating to Sonoma, and it seems to not accurately reflect the correct volume in the status bar like it does within the volume app. It's really strange.
