Thanks!! I think I am more concerned about updating from Monterey "system preferences" to Ventura "system settings" only to find "system settings" missing (inadvertently or by Apple's planned obsolesce) some customizable controls that were in "system preferences" and now I'm miserable. Is there a list of settings controls somewhere that Apple has done away with in Ventura?
I haven't located a comprehensive listing or overview of the sidebar design System Settings for Ventura. It's all rather how to do general things. For example you can make use of search rather than explore the hierarchy or use the View pull down which has search at the bottom also. You can also use Siri on Mac or Spotlight search to pull up specific settings quickly. There is no customization of the sidebar design.

So, it turns out your "friend" was actually you?

If you bring up system settings, the view pulldown menu offers 40 shortcuts that you can go to immediate without scrolling or looking inside nestled hierarchy. Image courtesy 9to5Mac

I can do that in 13.0.1 already

After the update auf my devices there are issues with the iCloud sync. E.g. Reminders are not syncing anymore between my devices. Anybody else is facing these issues?

I've had this several times directly after an update recently. After one update I ended up with duplicated reminders all over the place, too.
It then started working again just as randomly, though, with no input whatsoever.

The only thing that seems to be just there to stay is that sometimes when I start a Mac that I'm not using frequently, there are some old reminders that just won't go away until I manually mark them as done - these could be months old. But once ticked, it syncs to the latest state.

From reading the description it sounds a lot like Miro, which is basically a gigantic collaborative whiteboard. I'm looking forward to trying Apple's take on it.

Thanks I installed the updates and tried Freeform.

Scapple does a better job of adding new text elements on the board. Just click anywhere you want. In Scapple you can hold down control and drag two elements together to create a linked line.

Freeform needs a lot of work. Needs obvious keyboard shortcuts. It’s very hard to select multiple elements on the iPad version.

Scapple, eh? I need to look that up.

My main gripe with Freeform (and I haven't tried the latest version yet) is that it doesn't group pencil input with stickies automatically. It's an extra step and I kinda wish there was an option to have it grouped automatically.

And the next thing - I really want a dark mode for the canvas. As it is, it hurts my eyes when I want to use it in the evening. Which is a shame because Freeform is more or less exactly what I want otherwise.

It’s simple and neat. It doesn’t have all the features of a full mind map app but what it does well it does perfectly.

Ah, looks like it's not for iPad. That's a shame :(
It's where my main use case for Freeform is - handwritten notes on stickies, saved to iCloud.

Still interesting to see as we were recently looking for a miro alternative at work.

Updated smooth as butter on my 13-inch M1 MBP. Brave had been using quite a bit of RAM previously, but I also updated it this morning and it seems to have reduced slightly. I'll continue to monitor it.

I think the key feature of Freeform and others like it is the collaborative aspect. I know that with Miro (and I suspect Freeform) you can just open it at the same time as someone else and both work on and look at the same thing.

Scapple is nice for simple mind-mapping and outlining, but it's very lightweight and doesn't have this capability.

Yes, and as that list is in alphabetical order, I find it much easier to find the specific system pref I want.

The "new System Settings" looks nice, but not easy to use IMHO.
Case in point: I want to change the "Date and Time" settings... you need to know it's in "General", but you can find it right away in the "View" pulldown menu.

Hearing that scares me - I live and die by Reminders for work. Still holding out on Ventura, on Monterrey for my M1 MBP.

Does it have malware virus protection? There are some new very bad malware going around embedded inside png and Excel files.

I know but there are new attacks that work within applications. There’s a new PNG file malware that is pretty bad and we haven’t seen any mitigations from Apple, Microsoft, Google yet.

Freeform will become the usual high hopes/low expectations abandonware that Apple specialises in once something shinier comes along.

Right on schedule is RC on Dec 7th, release s/b on Monday Dec 12th if it's like the last two years.
I appear to be alone on the thread for FaceTime not being able to "find" the camera (2020 MBA AS) I went as far as erasing and restoring the Mac, and initially when opening FaceTime the camera responded; but when the prompt showed up to use other (iPhone) cameras, FaceTime...broke. can't find even the system camera. Any suggestions?

I would do a safe boot after you had the AS Mac off for a minute.

This isn’t that continuity camera issue is it, there was a fix for that posted here to try in the forums.

Hope not. It just needs keyboards short cuts, click anywhere to add text, and have Wacom support on macOS version. You can scribble notes on the iPad version but can’t scribble on macOS version because it doesn’t support stylus input. Makes no sense. Same problem Notes app has.
