The hardware models that are close to Apple's cutoff of older models for this major system release. I have a 16" M1 Max MBP (stock model) and haven't seen memory leak issue. But later reading it was discussed this had more to do with CTO orders than standard stock MBP builds. Some other also had no issues as commented.
A memory leak is entirely software. Hardware will make no difference, except in the case of Apple Silicon vs Intel — only because they use different software to accommodate their different hardware.

The fact is, Apple is promising features they can't even get done. Either its the tools or the OS that's holding them back.
Or it could just be their engineering bandwidth. Remember there’s a labor shortage, especially in software development people are getting paid twice their current salary to leave their jobs. Add that to the disruption caused by a pandemic, and most company’s timelines have been disrupted.

Is it me or does it feel like Apple has reached a bottleneck with macOS development? I think after 22 years it’s possible the OS is just in need of a complete rewrite. The OS is even older than Classic Mac OS at the time of its discontinuation. I remember Steve Jobs saying this was supposed to be the platform for the next 15 to 20 years.
I love macOS but I only use it for photo editing and internet. So what I would like is for Apple to make a macOS Lite, without things like news, messages, face time, etc, etc.

"We don't yet know what's included in macOS Monterey 12.2, and no new features were found in the first beta. "

there were literally articles about the new features in the last beta, namely Music

Looking forward to the release of 12.2. Trust that it will even better than 12.1 So far 12.1 has been quite stable for me, not experiencing memory leak issues. Did not change the size of my cursor, have not installed Chrome, but am using Firefox.

Sounds like a good idea…but highly unlikely.

In Microsoft’s case they moved to focus on business. so many and I mean so many custom programs written for various business related tasks that over the years cannot be upgrade or replaced. Businesses usually don’t replace or upgrade “If it is not broke don’t fix” or spend the money. Each new version has to incorporate older code (or keep) or breaks older vital apps. Microsoft’s has an advantage because many old programs over the years STILL work and load. Actually…some of my old programs with Windows 10 and 11 work better now then the original version OS to my surprise. Though Windows 11 is all 64-bit (I heard) 32-bit apps still work. They cannot rewrite their OS from scratch, but slowly modifying as the years go bye (like mixing and integrating Linux) is their only option I think, probably like Apple but they are not reliant on corporate clients as much as Microsoft.

For us who love the Mac world, they could attempt to do so, but too much costs involved plus way to much Quality Control involved to make sure everything (and current functionally that crosses over to the new OS) still works.

As we have seen at Apple over the last sum-what years…Quality Assurance or Control needs a lot of work. You would need some guys or gals who will not sleep, eat or take a vacation until something is fixed or works, or have a Steve Jobs driver at the helm yelling at you and calling you names if it is not at his expected level. Those days are over, more vacations, easier ride than before etc. Not saying it is not good for them…but we will not get the incredible and amazing stuff as we use too.

So rewriting from scratch..would be laughable. We are still struggling with getting an Apple Mouse to work with the latest OS. A total rewrite with the current Apple culture..ah…yeah…sure.

Apple is constantly changing the underlying parts of the OS, and modernising it. We have seen so many already, SL and 64-bit switch, APFS, System Volume changes in Catalina, BS, and Monterey etc. We also got a pretty nifty UI uplift in BS, which I think is very coherent compared to the mixed flavours of Tiger-Leopard-SL era, and the dull flat 2013+ era.

I will be very glad if they fix the Finder though. I so much want the Spatial Finder and WindowShade back.
What is spacial finder? Are you talking about cover flow? WindowShade? Is that the slide out drawer that some apps used? I miss that and the pill button which opened/hid the toolbar, and all the blue glossy elements (scroll bars, buttons, progress bars) back from Snow Leopard.

Anyone seeing any improvements in Apple Music. They had started 'speeding it up' in Beta 1...
Apple Music app seems to work fine for me. Still has all the same UI problems. No animation when you click on an album and go back. The lyric and Up Next drawer still covers your content. I'm starting to think that it won't get fixed or worse is intentional.

Does this 12.2 beta 2 fix external monitor connectivity problems? USB-C - USB-C hasn't worked since 12.0.1...https://discussions.apple.com/thread/253326025

I want to see what post-iTunes music app looks like, and see if my local library can still be managed and accessed as usual, plus star rating. If apple legitimately converts music app into an Apple Music app (meaning no longer having access to local library), then I want to move on asap. Btw, “download to listen to music offline (which is false)” doesn’t count.

High levels of YMMV assumed: I've been using USB-C on a 21:9 1440p display just fine with 12.2b1. We'll see what happens in the morning when I get my workflow cranking with 12.2b2. If it's broken, I have a DP fallback.

My monitor has a built-in KVM, so that one USB-C cable from my M1 Air does everything.

This is a reminder for some to read up about Copland and Gershwin 1994 thru 1996. They were both canceled by Apple CTO Ellen Hancock in August 1996. These two efforts was why Apple stock bottomed 1996. It's a stark reminder to the challenge of a complete rewrite. ;)
Agreed.

Also, a rewrite would just be Linux.
macOS is already Unix and has a super lean kernel and core.

There is nothing to rewrite.

A snow leopard year however is something I would LOVE.

No, its about cleaning things up.

A rewrite will do the opposite. It will set Apple back by many years, so it better be worth it. Even the move to Mac OS X wasn't a rewrite; they modernized the toolbox to turn it into Carbon, they modernized NeXTSTEP to turn it into Mac OS X, and they sprinkled a few things in here and there. The situation of Apple's OSes today is nothing like the situation in the mid-1990s. They've been steadily modernizing portions, and unlike then, there's no basic missing functionality that cannot easily be added after the fact.

Spatial Finder means every folder opens in its own window, and can only exist in one window, at its specific coordinates and size. Current Finder allows you to open folders in separate windows, but you can open a folder in more than one window. Basically, "New Finder Window" menu item shall not exist. And .DS_Store files are an abomination.

for those that are testing the new beta,
is there a possibility to reduce the height of the toolbars yet ?
i wish to make macos toolbars look more compact instead of this fat, space wasting mess, we got since bigsur theme refresh..
there's also memory leaks to plug (windowserver process memory usage slowly increasing untill eating 900+mb and still climbing as long as the OS stays up, is one example), and tons of bugs to correct.
i hope apple smells the coffee and at long last get a pulse, open an eye and start to work on their flagship product. *that* would be a refresh that i'd welcome, instead of that horrible makeup theme change they used as a lame excuse for a OS version bump.

come on apple! time to fix the bugs and restore macos good looking theme.

A little late on updating, but downloading now to my 2018 MacBook Pro; 2.32GB. Monterey has been much smoother on this machine than Big Sur before it.

Are you saying that we need to have people who "don't sleep, don't eat and don't take vacations until something is fixed" to have "incredible and amazing stuff"?

That is just bleak and horrible. It's also not true. The truth is quite the opposite, in fact.

You want to… improve quality by overworking engineers?

I am not saying that. :)

I Don’t want to over work engineers…(that is idiotic) I am going with what has been said by those who worked and sacrificed a lot to bring us great products. That is what they did when they were at the bottom. But Apple is not at the bottom anymore. The engineers did it willingly because they believed in their product (maybe the man too) more so than a paycheck. Not all of course. I don’t remember too many engineers leaving for better salaries as much under Jobs as now (I could be wrong of course). They did not jump ship so easily…why? They have high salaries now and good benefits etc. Even a boss that is nicer to them. yes..morale might be a factor.

I am not saying that those who are working at Apple now don’t care or don’t have pride in their work etc. Others who read this: No need to say that is what I am saying.. :) They probably do and they put out good products, but with all of the issues over the last some years (and it is easy to blame Jony of course), Jobs would not tolerate the errors. QA was Jobs…not marketing. Times have changed.

I don't believe this is supported in Monterey and beyond.
indeed, unfortunately this is not supported since monterey. shame.
apple forcing down my throat its horrible new theme while also forbiding options to mitigate all that mess.

12.1 let my MBP 14 access SD cards from the built in card reader. Good.
still waiting on glitch free audio playback of music files from Music via an external usb audio interface (Focusrite Scarlet). The random pauses are incredibly irritating.
Also still waiting for compatibility with the Caldigit TS3+ dock. iPhone won’t sync with it plugged in. I had to take it out of the system.
Still somewhat dissatisfied with the usability of the new ASi machines, even if the performance is really good.
