No, apps have to be updated to support app-thinning. You won't see any freed up capacity until iOS 9 final is released and all of your apps are updated.

iTunes will download the full version and sync thin versions to specific devices.
Ah, fair enough. Thanks.

And hm, I expected that of downloading through the iTunes Store on my Mac, but when synching apps, they are synched from given device to iTunes.
So, will iTunes detect a thinned app state and automatically download anything that's missing, is that what you mean?

iTunes will download from the app store, it doesn't need to detect anything.

Requested now OTA, will update soon with any battery life improvements.
Doubtful anyone would know anything meaningful about the battery soon. At least a few days and charging cycles are needed to really get a decent idea of what's happening with it.

The Multi-tasking, splitview, PIP, deep linking/backtrace, Spotlight improvements, major Notes update and so on are not minor changes and I love all of these features.

Multi tasking is for iPad Air 2 only though

For those not seeing OTA. get off WiFi, ensure your connected via carrier radio data, refresh, see the update, then switch back to WiFi ;)

First thing I tried when it wasn't showing up and was not helping me 15 minutes ago or now.

Well, as it is right now, my Mac can be offline and when I synch my iPhone manually with iTunes it will upload the apps from iPhone to iTunes lib (upon confirmation by the user), so the apps get transferred to iTunes, they may have never been in iTunes or simply be updates to apps that I never downloaded on my computer.

App XYZ is in iTunes lib and iPhone
App gets updated from version 1 to 2
I update the app from my iPhone
I don't update automatically on my Mac, so on the next synch iTunes asks me to transfer purchases, that is when it downloads the updated app from iPhone.

See what I mean?
Just making sure we're on the same page here. :)

Does app-thinning work retro-actively?
So, when upgrading to iOS 9 from iOS 8, will I end up with new free capacity or do I need to reinstall apps or update them instead?

Apple's own stuff will already be thinner, I assume.

But, no, it doesn't work retroactively — you'll have to wait for developers to adapt their apps. And they're not allowed to ship updated apps to the App Store until the SDK is final, i.e. in fall.

Bonus question: If my thinned apps on the iPhone get synched to my Mac's iTunes library, will it download the rest of the app? Because when switching or adding devices, you'd otherwise need to re-download the app or something else needs to happen...

Hm, I don't think they said how iTunes handles thinning.

Music
Known Issue
The Music tab is not displayed in the Music app.

Just a little bug there...

Did you notice that Spotlight no longer brings up App Store results in search? Do I need to adjust that in settings?
