What I’ve seen of Big Sur so far was great.
Except for my MBA 2014 I’m running it on sounding like it’s about to take off right after boot. It’s now got idle temps of up to 70 or so degrees which it never did with previous macOS versions.

Anyone else seeing this?

really seems to be taking a loooong time at "Preparing..." No visible signs of progress, nothing obvious about it in console logs...

... oh wait, the progress bar IS moving! very very slowly. (I eventually stuck another window over it with its edge just at the point where the progress bar reached and waited. And minutes later there's a few more pixels showing.)

As reported elsewhere in the dev article of this same B5 of Big Sur
8K Youtube in Safari Version 14.0 (16610.1.25.1.3) is quite usable, and is working better then Firefox 79

awesome - I could be wrong, but the feedback for beta 5 so far .. in the one day of exposure.. has been that its rather regressive bug wise and such from beta 4 / PB1.

Might want to tread carefully

(want to be careful from one beta to the next as a general practice but)

It took me two weeks to get Beta 4 stable and not crash after several hours or in the middle of the night. Even now, I still have launchd tasks that crash on startup and are restarted after 10 seconds to crash again and repeat the loop. All items were reported in Feedback. Until I hear of further stability, may not be able to move forward.

so far so good, battery life seems to be better, whole ui seems smoother also.

Safari seems to operate smoother also.

YouTube 4k is still taking up a lot of system resources in safari, up to 70%-80%.

Mac not going to sleep, seems to be fixed. 😁

Still early days though.

I like Big Sur. I believe that it is shaping up to be an excellent release.

The only issues I have are with the menubar. I hate the new menubar. I mean, I HATE the new menubar. I've submitted feedback to Apple begging for them to allow a legacy implementation in system preferences.

If some of you could do the same, I would appreciate it.
At least be specific about what you hate

I upgraded my partition, how do I get the full installer so I can made a bootable USB installer so I can do a fresh install?

Ok, I just installed it on my 27" 2019 iMac and it is a new world! The UI is very interesting but also refreshing. Apart from VMWare Fusion everything I use works. It will take me some time to get used to it, but I like what I am seeing.

Of course, YMMV, but I have experienced zero problems. I have run through all of the Apple apps, including GarageBand. It was reported Firefox would not open/work - I got it fine and tried out YouTube and Spotify web player - all worked fine. I'm obviously not an ideal example as I don't expect 3rd party apps to work on a beta operating system, so I mostly focused on literally everything that "comes out of the box" with the first PB and I've spent just over 2 hours with this one. Read a report Notes crashed; worked perfect for me. Mail, messages, calendar all check. Music, Photos, Apple TV+ etc. etc. all working good. Had a dozen apps open. I even out of curiosity downloaded Dropbox (it has also been reported not to work) and it loaded and works fine. AGAIN - I am not trying to convince anyone to try it if they are not comfortable with it, and certainly not run it on their daily driver, but I just wanted to chime in as someone who has used the first PB that this one is at least as good. Oh, BTW - 2015 MBP 15" Maxed.

OK, so that took about two hours to install. not long to download, and 28mins of actual installation at the end when the computer couldn't otherwise be used. The rest of the time was "Preparing..." What is it doing that it has to take so long?

installed, its version 11.0 Beta (20A5354i).
On this one my creative cloud updates worked, PB1 did not but I never got around to see if it was related to PB1.

Somebody please check the column view in Finder. Has Apple finally fixed “Right Size All Columns Individually” option, so that columns automatically resize depending on the width of the folder/file name when browsing through various folders?

Right now all this right click feature does is adjusting the width of only one column ones and than that width remain the same for all other columns even if nested folder has very short file names in it.

Browsing files in column view in Finder has been a disaster for years now. ForkLift mostly does the job but at some things it is not good enough to be a full Finder replacement. It is simply time for Apple to fix this completely broken feature.

I have been reporting this throughout the whole beta test period of Mojave and I think once or twice during Catalina. The only hope for this to be addressed is to make some of the big youtubers / tech sites mentioning it and hopefully the right person from Apple sees this.

This issue has been since day one when I started using Macs in 2013 and basically covers:

OS X 10.9 - Mavericks
OS X 10.10 - Yosemite
OS X 10.11 - El Capitan
macOS 10.12 - Sierra
macOS 10.13 - High Sierra
macOS 10.14 - Mojave
macOS 10.15 - Catalina

Sometimes I wonder if anyone at Apple actually does the job on their Macs, you know - like working with tons of files. 🤦‍♂️

Dude for years since OS X debuted there is a keyboard short it to right size column width accordingly. Do a quick search for this it’ll be a blessing.

installed PB1 on my MBP when it came out and so far it has been great, no glitches/bugs really that I noticed, might install this one

can we get better or more in depth feedback pls - point form?

- no isssues with basic UI navigation or performance from Catalina or faster?
- no issues in MBP (mode/yr) in terms of heat under - load (apps running)
- no issues over Wi-Fi connections home 5Ghz/2.4Ghz or public Wi-Fi (Starbucks), etc.

catch my drift? Some of us are looking to give it a try. I’m not sure if dual boot over Catalina would work, my 2017MBP doesn’t have T2 chip either.

Give it a try. I've been a Mac user for 10 years, but never installed a public beta before a couple of weeks ago. Although I normally installed public updates immediately, I like being "near" the bleeding edge.

I installed this on my 2017 12" Retina MacBook. The UI and general navigation has been perfectly smooth, no heat issues, nothing wrong with Wi-Fi, which I use exclusively. I don't have the T2 in this laptop.

I just had one issue where a tab in Safari caused a lockup and I had to restart Safari, but other than that it feels like a solid release.

I did do this install on a separate volume, but really that was just for ease of zapping it when it's time for the public release in the fall.

So help me when the ARM Macs come out there better not be any 32bit hardware or software in it.
Apple did that to us with 64bit G5 computers. They switch to Intel and released 32bit hardware and software.

nicely done brother and thanks!!
much appreciated. I’ll be considering a separate volume as well on my Mac.

Does anybody know if black login screen at startup is intentional or something is broken? When I boot up the computer or restart, the Login Screen wallpaper is all black.

Aside from that, been using Developper Beta since Beta 3 and works great!

Getting kernel panics as soon as I start a Parallels VM with this latest public beta now.

Anyone else? Parallels Desktop 16.

Parallels users beware.
