Beta 1 is fairly good with some odd UI issues and application performance, nothing unexpected for a beta. However, after installing Beta 2, kernel panic over and over and over. Would not stay up long enough to launch anything. Good thing I had a backup from Catalina to revert to so back on stable Catalina. Staying away from this one until a more stable beta, or just wait until the final bits are released.

It's a new feature. The update prepares beforehand like in iOS, so less time not being able to use your device. I'm curious to see how quick it will be.
Search for 'software update' https://www.apple.com/macos/big-sur-preview/features/
Definitely appears that way. ;)
I should have timed this.

I could be wrong, but I don't think we'll see this in effect until Big Sur is released. I believe I read somewhere that these betas always do a full install, hence the 7-8GB installer each time instead of an incremental/delta update like we normally see between OS updates. So we'll likely first see this when installing the 11.0.1 or 11.1.0 update to Big Sur.

Is there a way to get names in the iMessages program? I dislike the icon images. If if I don’t have an image, it’s a circle with initials. Just realized I have a few friends with the same initials. Ugh.

Ok, I just installed it on my 27" 2019 iMac and it is a new world! The UI is very interesting but also refreshing. Apart from VMWare Fusion everything I use works. It will take me some time to get used to it, but I like what I am seeing.

You did find the tech preview version of fusion? I also think the official version is out today.

I’m pretty sure the design in issues so we have to purchase upgrades...

Does anybody know if black login screen at startup is intentional or something is broken? When I boot up the computer or restart, the Login Screen wallpaper is all black.

Aside from that, been using Developper Beta since Beta 3 and works great!
same issue here

Drag the divider between the contact list and messages area to the right. It does take a fair amount of dragging, but eventually you'll get the names back.

So far so good. No kernel panics yet and Safari seems to be more stable. But perhaps too early to tell. There's little bugs here and there that I'll keep reporting.

Did an update from B4 to B5 on a 2015 MPB.

I'm on public beta 20A5343j and when I check for updates, I'm not being offered anything. Is that the correct way to get the update?

Should be, via System Pref -> Software update. Have you tried restarting your Mac and trying again?

Is the 2020 iMac supported yet?

no. It will make like it installed but never boots. You can do the option key thing and launch Catalina instead of the installer and you are still working, but can't run Big Sur... Also, Bootcamp drivers don't work for me either. I can install windows, but no drivers install.

I have weird rendering issues in PB2. Sometimes video isn't displaying in MS teams (when it's on, of course), Apple Maps not displaying the map, lines of text disappearing in Outlook when there's a space.

What machine are you running? I'm looking for a 16" MBP, I have the weekend to fiddle and I can handle certain bugs, but it would be really annoying if MS Teams didn't work since I use it almost all day of late.

Getting kernel panics as soon as I start a Parallels VM with this latest public beta now.

Are you running Big Sur as your host OS or guest VM? I had a couple of hangs upgrading my Big Sur guest VM to public beta 2 and the install progress bar seemed stuck for 30+ minutes but it eventually finished. Seems stable now. I am running Catalina on the host, Parallels 16 and using the Apple hypervisor (Configure->CPU & Memory->Advanced Settings).

Somebody please check the column view in Finder. Has Apple finally fixed “Right Size All Columns Individually” option, so that columns automatically resize depending on the width of the folder/file name when browsing through various folders?

Right now all this right click feature does is adjusting the width of only one column ones and than that width remain the same for all other columns even if nested folder has very short file names in it.

Browsing files in column view in Finder has been a disaster for years now. ForkLift mostly does the job but at some things it is not good enough to be a full Finder replacement. It is simply time for Apple to fix this completely broken feature.

I have been reporting this throughout the whole beta test period of Mojave and I think once or twice during Catalina. The only hope for this to be addressed is to make some of the big youtubers / tech sites mentioning it and hopefully the right person from Apple sees this.

This issue has been since day one when I started using Macs in 2013 and basically covers:

OS X 10.9 - Mavericks
OS X 10.10 - Yosemite
OS X 10.11 - El Capitan
macOS 10.12 - Sierra
macOS 10.13 - High Sierra
macOS 10.14 - Mojave
macOS 10.15 - Catalina

Sometimes I wonder if anyone at Apple actually does the job on their Macs, you know - like working with tons of files. 🤦‍♂️

Holy crap—I had no idea this existed! You just saved me so many OCD clicks! I'm on Mojave 10.14.6, and it works perfectly.

Absolutely smooth sailing for me (MacBook Air 2018). Except for Spotlight, which has somewhat improved over PB1, but still far off from what I'm used to.

Everyone be careful. For my MacBook Pro 16 2019, I had major problems. It would boot, then stop during software loading, freeze, fan power surge, and cut off from an endpoint security kernel panic. Tried reinstall, recovery mode install, and safe mode. No kernel panic in safe mode, but any reinstall would result in same situation. Had to go into recovery, erase my hd, and install Catalina. Never had any problems with Beta 1 - 4.

Same here with beta 5 on MBP 16. I am having all kinds of issues after the update yesterday. Launching Parallels VM causes instant panic and shut down. It is getting really hot when that happens too. I switched the CPU settings over to the apple hyper visor and reclaimed space on windows VM and it launched fine after that.
