Thank you for a clear message that distinguishes between HomePod Stereo and mutiroom function.

Multiroom function is all I’ve been waiting for. If it’s possible to control and play music on multiple speakers, Apple TV and multiple Homepods via iTunes on the Mac - and control on the Mac via in the ancient remote app on the iOS device - I can’t see why it’s so hard for them carry over to iOS.

I’m hoping against hope that we’ll see it in the next beta, along with firmware updates for HomePod, and for Apple Express Routers to support Airplay2.

That cheap dongle you are looking for exists: it's called Airport Express, you can buy the old gen on eBay for less than $20 (I got one for $10), plug an optical cable into it ($5) and to your speakers and boom you now have Airplay compatible speakers.
You’re missing the point. With Apple abandoning the Airport lineup, it doesn’t seem like the Airport Express is going to get upgraded to Airplay 2. Totally disappointing since I have 4 of those “dongles” and was excited to finally be able to stream to multiples of them at once.

I hope you're wrong.

I updated to the new beta last night.
When I get to work this morning, I had trouble connecting my AirPods to my phone automatically.
It shows the popup that says Pip's AirPods, but I don't hear the sound.
When I go to Bluetooth settings, it is not connected to the AirPods.
I had to manually select the AirPods in the settings and then I heard the sound.

Everyone who owns an airport express hopes this isn't true, but knowing Apple in 2018, it's expected that a product they just EoL'ed won't support a feature they're about to release.
It wouldn’t be expected of any company (including Apple) in 2018, 2008, 1998, 1988 or 1978. I’ve been following consumer electronics in general, and Apple in particular, for about 40 years. I can’t recall a time anyone rolled out new features for a product that was already on EOL status. I could be wrong.

There's hope yet! https://9to5mac.com/2018/04/04/airplay-2-airport-express/

Wonder if this will make it into GM.
