Oh yeah?

:D

At this point, why not just get rid of the dock and use the App Launcher exclusively? For the record, I don't use the App Launcher.

Oh it’s hardly terrible, and I definitely prefer the uniformity of the designs vs. the hodgepodge of different styles/palettes/perspectives (2D vs. 3D) of the normal array of icons in the dock.

That being said [as someone previously pointed out], there’s obviously quite a bit of room for improvement: not using the iOS7 curved corner background, maybe have some depth, or a slight 3D rotation (see the new iWork icons for examples).

What would be nice, is a consistent design language for 3rd party app icons - sometimes when I look at my dock, it’s a mess (though I tend to launch apps through QS/Alfred/Spotlight way more than I use the dock anyway :D )

...and if you’re not using 10.7, 10.8 or even 10.9, you’re missing out on some great features, and nothing has been lost to iOSification (this is something from a developer/architect who would be the first to say, OSX is no longer a viable tool)

I'm on OS X 10.7.5 at work and 10.6.8 on my personal laptop. I've not once ever felt the want to move to Lion or Mountain Lion. None of the features excite me... except for one: the ability to resize windows from any corner or side. Everything else is pretty much the same for me.. I like to keep my Mac as clean and minimal as possible, focusing on maximum optimization, reduced CPU/RAM usage and a clutter free environment. I do a ton of graphic design using photoshop, illustrator and indesign along with video and photography (Im a media developer). Optimization is my #1 priority, and thus RAM is as well. I may update to 10.9 but only out of necessity; I may need Lightroom 5 which is incompatible with 10.6.8.

As for the icons... i dont like dictatorships and prefer the 3D icons currently used rather than the flat ones in iOS 7... that said, they're going to be difficult to distinguish if all 50+ apps in my applications folder all look the same. Definitely a bad move.

However, if you really want your flat icons... as someone else posted a screenshot, theres no reason why you cant install CandyBar and make a system overhaul with a theme or do things manually... you have the choice.

Curious what system you have? I have the same problems. I've been booted into windows and running for a week straight with no issues.

Thinking it might be GPU related but curious what system and specs you have.

So with 10.10 the Mac OS will be gone and iOS will run on the Macs?

Nope. Take off the tinfoil hat, the article didn't say that at all. Matching up icons isn't remotely the same thing as dumping the OS and using the other version instead.

I'm guessing that one of the 10.9.x releases will come around the same time as the new Mac Pro is launched and include some underlying stuff especially for it.

Each article I've read about the upcoming Mac Pro notes that log files show it's running a special Mavericks build. This should be folded into a general 9.x update about launch time.

With iOS becoming more desktop class with 64bit computing, I'm sure the transition to combine the 2 will get easier with each update. Eventually your ipad will basically run whatever full desktop version is in your Mac.

I hope they fix Quick Look for videos, as I used to use it everyday until Mavs came out. Sure, I could use Quicktime but using Quick Look is so much easier.

And although it wasn't that much of a bother, Launchpad could use some fixing as well. I'm looking forward to these updates.

I honestly say that this is probably the most stable .0 release I ever had.

found no problem with my OS, ymmv.
I concur, but not everyone agrees. Check out comments at macperformanceguide.com

OS X Mavericks: Not Recommended At Present
Mavericks has all sorts of new bugs ranging from annoying to nasty to broken APIs to crashes. It is at least as bad a case of Apple Core Rot as any prior release. I have not had time to write up the numerous problems and probably won’t anytime soon due to a heavy workload and travel plans.

Wait till 2014 to upgrade—it’s just not worth it.

There are a ton of people, me included, who are struggling with the instability of this OS including issues with:

* Hangs on install
* the Mail app
* system hangs
* slow performance
* Finder issues (how can that be? Geez)
* slow boot up
* slow shutdown and system hangs on shut down

plus many many others.

Consider yourself fortunate and then read this thread and see how the rest of us are suffering:

Honestly, I really question Apple's beta testing program. This is not Windows where they try to support 15 year old hardware as well as new hardware: for 10.9 Apple officially DOES NOT support hardware (pretty much) older than 5 years old. I really don't understand....

And there is also plenty of blame to spread around, especially the drive maker, WESTERN DIGITAL, who totally phoqued their Apple-based customers who upgraded to 10.9. Maybe Apple and WD share the same testing team.

:eek:

It wasn't my intention to marginalize your pain. ;)

By bringing in a totally new iOS7 flat design with pastel colors, well... I think it's a mistake.
In the end everything in iOS 7 works the same way as it did in iOS 6. It just looks a bit different, so I honestly don't know what people are complaining about. It will be the same with OS X.

Because it doesn't make a very good app switcher. Nor does is it convenient place to store favorites. The Dock is.

For the most part the problem isn't the beta testing. The testers find the vast majority of issues and report them, apple just didn't fix them in time for their .0 release.

Could not agree more.
The resize from-every corner is the only Lion feature I miss...

Have been to Lion and ML, have come back.
Once Mavericks is at 10.9.2 I'll have a go (Clone disk->update->Try).

I'm looking forward to some of the OS optimizations, but honestly most of the new features Apple has offered in mavericks fall flat with me:
• iBooks? - Excuse me, I have iBooks on the iPad, why would I want to read books from a MBP/MP?
• Maps? - can't see the point on a computer. iPhone/iPad? yes. Mac Pro? No.
• New Calendar? - Switched back to a paper calendar 18 months ago. The main problem with electronic calendars just can not be fixed with an update.
• Safari? - Nice, but I'm making do with 5. Just as with a larger tv: the programming does not get better...
• iCloud keychain? - for an iCloud user it this is probably a good update, but I'm using neither keychain nor iCloud...
• Multiple displays? - wait. Didn't mac support multiple displays since way back in the 80's? Oh yeah. This means they "fixed" the "feature" they "introduced" when allowing full screen apps...
• Notifications? - no need.
• Finder Tabs? - Long overdue, but not really necessary for me. I installed a trial for Totalfinder once upon a time, and when the trial expired I didn't consider it worth the money.
• Finder tags? - Wait, this is an improvement? I think it's a disaster waiting to happen: http://arstechnica.com/apple/2013/10/os-x-10-9/8/#tags
• "Advanced technologies"? - Some of these are interesting, others less so, but definitely among the few real reasons to "upgrade".

Honestly, I'm a recovering UI designer/programmer and since I returned to the Mac in 2006, I've regularly sent suggestions to apple about potential improvements to the OS, especially to Finder. In all these years exactly one of them has been realized (flexible resize). In all the other cases, post snow leopard, OS X has moved farther and farther from my ideal...

RGDS,

• iBooks? - Excuse me, I have iBooks on the iPad, why would I want to read books from a MBP/MP?

For 2 years I had to bring my iPad to read books at Starbucks even though I always carry my MBP with me. Now I don't have to carry 2 computers to read a book wherever I want.

• Maps? - can't see the point on a computer. iPhone/iPad? yes. Mac Pro? No.
Maps is amazing, it's the fastest map experience on a desktop. The only thing it needs is better map data now and then goodbye maps.google.com.

• Safari? - Nice, but I'm making do with 5. Just as with a larger tv: the programming does not get better...

Actually Safari is one of the most actively developed projects in OS X and it gets really better with each release. Performance wise, 7 is a lot faster than 6. 5 is not even comparable now.

Does anyone use the app launcher? Virtually all my Mac app launches are via the Dock, or Spotlight (cmd-Spacebar).

Apple needs to solve the issue with WD hard drives - Apparently OSX 10.9 is wiping WD drives in their entirety. That is an insane bug for a first release of a new OS.
There will be no installing past 10.8.5 until this is resolved.
Sounds like Apple needed more Beta Testing before releasing this OS.
I have Windows 8 as well. Win 8 isn't that big a deal that a lot of people make it out to be.

Documentation, entertainment and so on are areas, where e-Books are important.

• Maps? - can't see the point on a computer. iPhone/iPad? yes. Mac Pro? No.
You plan never ahead? Some tasks require detailed maps (Google Maps is better).

This is a problem with the WD software, not a problem with Mavericks.

Hopefully a fix for the rMBP track pad / keyboard lock up issue is included.
This sounds like a firmware issue. I doubt that 10.9.1 or 10.9.2 can solve this issue.

I have no problem with flat design.... BUT please do not bring the icons to OS X, please, just please no. I am getting used to the icon, but still looks childish to me....

Fortunately, OSX is not as locked down as iOS. I am going to back up all my 10.9 icons and overlay any trashy pastel rubbish introduced in 10.10.

I do worry about the dock, though. If Apple 'simplifies' it like the solid bar in iOS7 then CandyBar will find another buyer.
