Oh is it automatic if you’re wearing a watch? You don’t need to do anything on your watch before hand?
It does not require WiFi to work. As far as unlocking to someone else's face, I have not tried that so I cannot say if it will or not. I thought it still used a "partial face scan" and either way I always have my iPhone on me and if someone else were to get it, they would have to be pretty close to me as you have to be close to the Apple Watch for it to work, and I would feel the haptic feedback (and see the text on the AW saying it unlocked my iPhone) from the Apple Watch letting me know someone has unlocked my iPhone without me knowing. If the Apple Watch is too far away, it will not authenticate and will not unlock the iPhone.
Plus, you cannot use this method for Apple Pay or to buy anything on the iPhone.
So, still quite a secure and safe way to unlock your iPhone if you have a mask on.
It is automatic, and you do not need to do anything on your Apple Watch before.
It unlocks your iPhone essentially at the same speed as if you did not have a mask on, so it is very fast.
Battery was pretty awful in first release. Is this update any better if anyone has been running it long enough to notice yet?
Apparently it did when the first 14.5 beta came out. They then released another beta (also called 14.5 beta 1, which is stupid but hey) which fixed the issue.
Ahh, my apologies. I did not install the first version so I honestly had zero clue.
I was obviously talking about iOS 14.5 Beta 1.
I have tested and it appears to do the following :
1) Scan face ...
2) If the face is unobstructed it will verify or deny as normal
3) If the face is obstructed with a mask, look for apple watch
4) If apple watch is found, verify, present message on watch that phone has been opened with option to re-lock.
5) If apple watch is not found, deny
If the apple watch is reasonably close to the phone, any face obstructed with the mask will open the phone. Re-locking with watch will cause the phone to require the passcode to unlock on next try.
Exact same problem too. Was really hoping it would work 🤷♀️
