Still have my White late 2007 MB. Wish I could put 10.9 on it, but I've kept 10.6.8 on it, which still rocks and was considered the best build for a while.

But during the keynote I thought they said people running older versions don't have to buy all the other versions to upgrade and can go directly to Mavericks. Why not just do that instead of misleading customers?

These versions are for people that can't run Mavericks due to old hardware. It allows them to upgrade to Lion or Mountain Lion from Snow Leopard or earlier OS's (as long as their hardware is supported).

If you're running 10.6.8 or higher, it's free.

Does everyone remember that Psystar was sued by Apple for selling computers with Leopard installed. Since OSX Maverick is free, can new companies start building and selling their own hackintoshes? If I remember correctly the issue was that Psystar violated end-user license agreement for OSX, but if it is a free OSX is that still a valid issue?

Yes, it is still a valid issue. Even though the software is now free, it is still copyrighted material which use is governed by a licensing agreement.

I get still offering Snow Leopard and Lion, but Mountain Lion and Mavericks share the same system requirements.
There's no reason I can think of to run (let alone spend time and money installing) Mountain Lion, now that Mavericks is out...not to mention FREE.

Yes. In fact, there are a few models (Mid 2007 iMac, etc) that originally shipped with 10.4!

Software compatibility/ incompatibility. There are some things that haven't quite been updated yet. Upgrading could break a kernel extension, VPN software, iSCSI access...

"Customers who have previously purchased Lion or Mountain Lion can download the operating systems through the "Purchases" tab of the Mac App Store."

Not true... Mountain Lion is not available. Lion is Available.
That's wrong. See below:

The calendar. It actually looks much nicer now.

Hah, never checked it since I don't use it that much. Yeah, it does. I like skeuomorphism, but the ripped off page and the gingerbread texture was really annoying me. That's not even what a calendar looks like in real life.

Hi Everyone, Is it just me?… After reading that Apple will let people who have previously Purchased theses Systems ReDownload them by clicking the purchases section of Mac App Store. I have purchased BOTH of the Systems, But when I select download I get an error " There was an error in the App Store. Please try again later. (13) " I have tried deleting the Mac App Store Caches.db file & com.apple.appstore.plist files, But still get error.. Is it because I live in UK?

I get the exact same error in the US trying to download Lion. And if I click on the OS X Lion to try and visit the app page for it, I get the error "The item you've requested is not currently available in the U.S. store."

Putting it in a VM

So I can regain use of some applications and/or features that have been lost through the last couple of system upgrades.

No it's not wrong. If you already have upgraded to 10.9 it will not let you download 10.8. At least it didn't for me, even though the download was for a different computer.
Yesterday I didn't try but today I clicked continue in stead of cancel to test this and Mountain Lion has now downloaded.
The Download went normal. "Install OS X Mountain Lion.app" is now back in my Applications folder.
At the end it did give a warning that the installer can't be run since OS X 10.9 is already installed on this computer but it appears to be a functional installer.*
MBP 2009. Mavericks installed.
Sorry to hear it doesn't work for you.

* [Haven't done this step yet but since it is a newer a combo version that includes all the recent updates I figured I could use it to update the back-up installation USB & an external ML partion with it as well as test its availability.]

Another edit to add:
After copying "Install OS X Mountain Lion.app" to an external back-up disk I deleted it from the Applications folder. Mountain Lion is now once again listed available for download under Purchases in the App Store.

Option also available in Belgium

Hello,

I don't find this option on the Belgian Apple Store.

Is this only an option for US citizens?

Cheers

Download Lion & Mountain Lion with Mac App Store

Hi Everyone, I was selected by apple to beta test Lion (10.7) Mountain Lion (10.8) and Mavericks (10.9).. Just before These systems were released to Public Apple sent me Redemption codes to download the systems by the Mac App Store. They appear in my purchases with MAS but i keep getting an error 13 when trying to redownload Lion (10.7).. The reason why I wanted to download 10.7 is because My Mac Pro 1.1 (March 2007) isn't capable of running a system any higher. I used my Macbook Pro mid 2009 to test 10.8 & 10.9. I have tried all the known workarounds.. Anyone got any ideas?.. Thank you.

Hi Everyone, With regards to re-downloading Lion (10.7) again via the Mac App store from purchases section IF you have already purchased it. I was in a live chat yesterday with an iTunes store support agent. He tried everything possible at his end to try and allow me to re-download Lion (10.7) again via the Mac App store.. He ended by saying " After attempting to place this order back into your download queue, I received notification that this item could not be regretted.".. and said that Lion was NOT included in the " Re- download previous purchased OS's for free if already purchased.. It only applies to Mountain Lion (10.8). IF, anyone hasn't backed up their previously purchased copy of Lion 10.7 then Apple is sorry, But includes this guidance at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4482 to explain it is the user's responsibility to make a backup.

OK, so I just bought Lion from Apple's online store: the website, not the app.

I have a white plas- .... uh, polycarbonate MacBook I bought new in June 2008 from the cube store here on 5th Avenue.

So what happens now?
Will I get a DVD or a datastick in the mail?
Or will I get emailed a download code?
And if it's the code, just where, exactly, will I be downloading from?

Thank ye!

If you ordered from this link http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion you ordered a code for Map App store download which you should have received in an email. So, this means you need to be running snow leopard 10.6.6 or later, otherwise you do not have the Mac App store which is needed for Lion.

Question: which Mac OS X are you running on your '08 MacBook? And what is the final Mac OS X you want to run on this, Lion, or are you trying to get a way to Mavericks?

The point of this is so that if you have a computer that isn't capable of running Mavericks you can still update it to the newest OS it can run.

That's wrong. See below:

Maybe there was a glitch going on when you posted this that has since been fixed, but I just went and checked my purchases and Mountain Lion is available for download.

Sorry For The Late Response!

10.6.8

And what is the final Mac OS X you want to run on this,
Lion, or are you trying to get a way to Mavericks?

No, Lion's fine.
The latest version I can get possible is what I'm after.

I got the download code in an email, like you say.
I just don't know what to do with it! lol

In the Mac App Store > PURCHASES, my Lion purchase isn't listed.
And there doesn't seem to be a REDEEM section, either.
Please help!

I'm in 10.6.8 App Store now, click on "featured" there should be a Quick Link box on right with Redeem there.

Is 10.7 as far as you can go with that MacBook? ...if so, be prepared for things being slightly slower and shorter battery life...at least that's the way it was for my newer mid 2010 MBP. If you have a 2nd hard drive make it so you can run 10.6.8 if/when you need/want it.

Be sure to run all the software updates before using also. Good luck!
