i just want to confirm that this "sold out" stuff is for their online / pre order stuff ... they will still have some in their stores friday 11-2?

How many is "Selling out"?

Just curious what the numbers are. Apple could have 10 iPad mini tablets and sell them out.

I just like numbers when it comes to sales so am curious to see them.

That's a valid response to anyone claiming they 'sold out'. What are the exact numbers and are these end user or channel sales.

----------

Never underestimate the number of idiots in the world willing to part with almost double the cash for a technically inferior product, simply because it has a picture of a fruit on it.

Never underestimate that not everyone has your specific needs or your snobbery and might have other reasons for buying. Like say Junior's school says he has to have an iPad. Not a computer, or a tablet but an iPad. But he doesn't need the high power of an iPad 4 and the Mini will be easier for his smaller hands to hold without dropping it.

----------

Even Amazon.com's homepage is dissing the ipad mini.

Of course they are. they are making their own product and want you to buy it. Not something else.

There are mumblings that the DOJ might look into whether Amazon's rabid advertising of its own tech has fallen into anti-trust violations. Will be interesting if they do start and investigation and how it falls out

----------

The white/silver is selling nicely, but the black/soot has low demand.

Or the same demand but they made 4 times as many. We won't know without numbers.

Apple should've sold the iPad mini for 199$! You know, so they could make less money selling the same number of devices...

Since they're guaranteed to sell XX million of every iGadget they release, how about they ****** stock up on the damn things ahead of launch to meet the very much expected demand?

They do but they don't give all the supply to the online channel, maybe 1/5th of it is given to online.

But they can't stock pile for weeks on end for a couple of reasons including

Security -- the earlier they start production the more leaks plus one hint of where the warehouses are and it's a guaranteed robbery attempt

Battery -- batteries trickle drain even when the device is off. The last thing they want is someone getting a DOA device because it was in a warehouse for months. Particularly since that person will demand another one and burn a unit that could have been sold to someone else (no one is going to except 'take it home and charge it for 8 hours and then you can use it' from Apple)

----------

Or Apple could release new/updated products such iPads and iPhones in fewer countries on release date. Have more of the first wave stock available in those countries.

That just pushes the resellers to act. NYC and LA are full of them every launch, double when Asia isn't included in the first wave.

With the iPad 3, Apple included China within the first two weeks of launches and the resellers in NYC were returning so many units that they wouldn't be able to sell in China that the staff had to set up a separate line. But they tried to come back for the iPhone 5 and will for the iPad Mini etc

exactly, was wondering how Apple can dodge the sale numbers, any organisations out there to can check actual sales, even they can check buy it's payed tax(since they world wide, it will be very difficult though)

Quality that lasts

While I think the mini is excellent (Apple has VERY few duds), I recommend waiting for the next version. It is a reasonable assumption that it will be Retina, and have the A6X, which is quite powerful.

On the other hand, I'm (happily) still rocking an iPad 1 (the wife has the iPad 2, which I believe to be the true iPad sweet spot).:)

Still, the iPad 1 does what I need to, and quite well. My kids love it, and we're so invested in the Apple ecosystem that moving away would be painful. I am neither poor nor wealthy, so I purchase Apple products for the (relative) long term. Therefore I time my purchases to match what I perceive to be the best bang for the buck (In retrospect, I would've waited for the iPad 2, but who knew?).

So test it out, and if it does it for you, pull the trigger. If you, like others in this forum want a true laptop replacement, look elsewhere. Both Google and Microsoft are taking that approach (with all the complexity that introduces); Apple's not interested in that; they just want it as simple as possible, which suits me fine (but not everyone).

I intend to get a mini for family use (I have 4 kids!), given my wife will murder anyone who touches her iPad. But I'll wait for gen 2.

Now Apple, how about user accounts in iOS. Please? Pretty please?!?!?!

Of course they are, Amazon had the small tablet market locked up last Christmas.

The 8 and under perhaps but not the tablet market as a whole.

As I recall they announced that they sold something like 5 million Kindles (no breakout of how many were which) during the Holiday quarter, while Apple announced selling a good 4 times that in iPads during the same period.

Can you give me examples of things that you are talking about? I'm honestly curious, because as far as I can tell most, if not all the things my buddies can do on their android tablet, I can also do.

use all that GB's as you see fit. plug-and-play. manage storage without any special software (itunes). there is no true file system in ios.

change keyboard. use stock, swift key, swype key.

attach any file to an email when sending from a phone. ever notice you could only attach pictures on iphone? that process is also cumbersome if attaching more than 1 pic. you have to use sth like gmail app to attach multi image at once. still limited to attaching pics only.

bluetooth file transfer.

expandable storage. (not all tablets offer it though).

in summary, android is pretty modular. user has the ability to change many many things without ever rooting(or jailbreaking). rooting is only required for hardcore android stuffs. 90% of customizations can be done without it.

of course these are just few of many. you can say that you don't need any of these abilities which is also fine. i have an ios device for experiment but primarily an android user. if customization and being-in-charge-of-your-own-device your kind of thing, i'd say give android a try.

My white, 64gig, Wifi/LTE iPad mini delivery date is November 23rd, and I preordered it on October 26th! ;-)

Hardly surprising.

Of course. Apple knows how many to make, sets them aside for "pre orders", and then "Sell out". Phil Shiller is Marketing, not engineering so of course they hype it up.

Not mentioned is the stack sitting next to the "pre orders"..........:apple:

According to Richard Shim, market analyst of NPD Display Search, the touch screen production AU Optronics made for the iPad mini yield has been low, and it provides only about 100,000 units iPad mini screen. According to the original plan, the AU Optronics must provide 400,000 units touch screens in October, 800,000 in November and a million in December.

Comparatively speaking, LG in September provided Apple with a 300,000 units screen, and planned to provide one million in October and 3 million in December.

This guy could very well be talking out of an orifice not on his head, like most analysts.

Wait and see what the actual sales numbers are.

Basically, make the tablet more of a computer than an internet access device (which the iPad is fantastic).

The ipad is NOT a computer and is not likely to ever be one. it was made for folks that don't need a computer to do what they are looking to do. So why are you trying to make it something it isnt and isn't trying to be. Go buy a notebook and be happy.

I preordered the minute it came out (refresh, refresh)
Here in Norway all (wifi) models where 2 week wait from the start...and we also have to wait an extra 1 or 2 weeks on shipping :/
Mine is expected delivery on 26th...
US Apple customers are so spoiled :p
We don't even have any official Apple Stores.
But i guess some have it worse, those not on the first launch-list.

Don't worry... it will be ok

hmm, looks like someone asked for an iPad for Christmas and Granny got him a Kindle cause she thought they are all the same.

Consumption Device:
As Apple sees the tablet, it's a consumption device.

Yeah, that's why they didn't bother with making iWork or iLife apps why all those folks making journal writing, movie editing, photo editing etc apps were rejected from the store. Apple only wants games etc cause it's a consumption device. Hell they didn't give bother to put a camera or email app on there cause that would be 'creating' something and they can't have that happening.

Those are all valid points, but the Apple I know from the mid 00's when I first started using their products was more like this: Keynote, Steve says "available... TODAY". And sure enough, the worldwide distribution had somehow managed to sneak this thing under the radar and out to stores, and the next day I could go to my Apple Premium Reseller in Sweden and pick up this iPod, MBP or whatever it was. When the iPhone 3G was introduced, the first iPhone available in my country, everyone had truckloads of them and getting one in your preferred color wasn't a problem anywhere.

This whole thing with constant supply shortage and lousy availability for the first month or two started with iPhone 4. The #1 carrier Telia let you sign up for one, but it wasn't even a preorder, it was a damn queue ticket for the preorder queue. On launch day there were some 400 customers waiting at my local Telia Store, then they started selling them, then they announced after 2 minutes that they were sold out! The dozen or so they put on the counter were their entire share! That crap went on for 2-3 months, and that's when I gave up bothering with any of Apple's newly released stuff. I'm not gonna wait in line for a damn phone like some Trekkie with Vulcan ears outside for some Star Trek midnight premiere. Lately I've waited until supply meets demand and I can just pick the product up.

Never underestimate the number of idiots who have time to come to an Apple related forum to trash Apple products.

I am a long time Apple fan and am heavily invested in the Mac ecosystem and I agree with this statement. Of course there are people like us who read the forums, check the websites, etc... But there millions of people who just buy Apple because its "cool" to buy Apple products and that's a fact. I do believe that the mini is a fail for me. Wanted to replace my iPad 1st gen with this because I like the smaller form but not gonna buy an outdated tablet. Just gonna wait until it comes with a retina display.

Me too since they always "sell out." Its probably a marketing thing with the limits preset to appear so wanted.

Yep. For some inexplicable reason, MacRumors is the new Apple Haters HQ.

New Big-Volume Apple is harder to orchestrate than Old Small-Volume Apple. :(

I think they only had the one they showed at the presentation.

So, no wonder they sold out immediately.

Consumption Device:
As Apple sees the tablet, it's a consumption device.

Say what? iOS is a far better creation device than an Android device. There are some stellar creation apps in iOS, not the least of which are Apple's own (GarageBand, Keynote, Pages).

The majority of members here enjoy using Apple products. That's pretty much why we're here, to see the latest news or rumor that Apple is up to. If you (or anyone else) comes here simply to troll, really - just get lost. It's one thing to have different opinions, totally another thing to name people who choose to buy the mini as "idiots."

If you don't want one, don't get one. Simple as that. If another person wants one, or chooses to buy the Kindle or whatever, good for them too. Life is about choices. Grow up.

I have an iPad, two iPhones (only one in use), an Apple TV and a MacBook Air. Complaining about Apple isn't trolling. I enjoy Apple products. I thought Apple's decision not to release a mini (years ago) was dumb and that people who are calling people buying the mini "idiots" are people who are mad at Apple for releasing a Mini.

So tell me where I said not to get said product?

Again. Macrumors. Not Macfans.

Hardly surprising.

Especially considering that not many people have yet begun their Christmas shopping. Now, I'm an outlier where *everything* down the wrapping paper has been purchased already (and three gifts will show up Friday), but most folks are still 3 to 4 weeks away from beginning their holiday shopping in earnest.

Also a valid point, though I don't quite see the night-and-day difference between iPhone 3G demand and iPhone 4 demand. First weekend sales were 1 million 1.5 million. The difference in availability was monumental though. I don't really see why you'd release a product you barely have yet, unless you want to make headlines about having sold out...

I pre-ordered my iPad Friday at 3am (I'm on the east coast). It's been "Preparing for Shipment" since late Friday afternoon. I've never pre-orded an Apple product before, can anyone shed some light on when I can expect it to ship?
