I've never seen desperation from lack of sales of an Apple product come to the surface so abruptly. I hope this means customers have been collectively taking a stand against the new pricing strategy, as older iPhones (6s, 7, 8) continue to work fine for a lot of people.

I’m thinking you’re right, these trade in incentives that they’re offering is clearly a sign that they know consumers are retaining their devices longer than anticipated, which during the holiday season, Apple is hoping and relying on successful iPhone sales to close out the quarter, which of course, exact numbers are no longer available for quarterly reports.

It irritates me that Apple pushed a message to my iMessage account attempting to influence me. I see that very differently than viewing displayed adds on my home screen. Apple preaches individuals privacy. These types of push notifications are hypocritical. :apple:

Nothing was sent to your iMessage app pushing an iPhone.

You have notifications turned on from Apple Store app you chose to instal, and you are in the iPhone upgrade program. I turned notifications off when I chose to install the app, and I’m not part of the iPhone upgrade program, unlike you.

Why do I have to read about your choices?

Yeah I’m surprised how many are brushing this off as nothing out of the ordinary. I don’t remember Apple doing anything like this last year. And I don’t remember ever seeing big bold headlines including prices on Apple’s homepage (not online store). iPhone sales have been flat for a while now. Smartphones are good enough and people don’t see reasons to upgrade. To compensate Apple is increasing prices so at least they can show revenue/asp increases. But eventually people are going to balk at the price increases and maybe this is the year it’s happening.

I guess I’m the only one who remembers Apple promoting the price of the phone as the 2-year contract subsidized price.

The off contract price used to be in the fine print.

People have short memories.

For the record I’ve had notifications off in the Apple Store App since installation. So your observation is flawed. I suggest you place me on your ignore list. The pain seems obvious.;)

You must be very special since Apple chose to message only you through iMessage, it would be a mistake for me to ignore you since you are a source of unique news.

Apple did it as an iMessage for you? Sounds like you might be opted into something for that, given that what's here seems to be in relation to messaging through the Apple Store app.

Pretty sleezy and desperate

And against apple’s own App Store terms to not spam users

Apple’s luster is corroding. Someone give that Tim Cook the boot already.

As if people aren’t aware their multiple year old iPhone isn’t the latest. And as if this reminder will move units.

This is coming from he Apple Store App not the Apple App Store. Also comes after signing up for the Apple upgrade program which i'm sure has language allowing this sort of communication.

Apple is now pushing these deals in their retail stores. Genius Bar, Apple TV and other displays are advertising the trade-in deals for the XR and XS.

Not sure what this has to do with my comment.

Thanks, I’ll check to see if there are any related apps I’ve missed. Definitely was not through the Apple Store App however. It was not through notifications. It was a text through iMessage. If there is language that allows such personal invasions with the Apple Upgrade Program this phone will be my last with that program. :apple:

The screenshot I posted was from the AppStore. The push notifications are coming from the Apple Store app.

If anything, I will just buy an 8 soon. I want a smaller iPhone and do not need or want all the bells and whistles of the more expensive and bigger models.

Not on IUP and shut off notifications from Apple.

Apple is promoting the iPhone price after trade-in similar to how they promoted the iPhone price after carrier subsidy in the past.

I'm not sure why that's such a big deal.
The photo you posted was from a keynote. Apple always shows prices during keynotes. Here’s what they showed at this years keynote:

I don’t see XR from $449 or XS from $699 anywhere on that slide. Now Apple is plastering these prices anywhere they can. Obviously XR from $749 and XS from $999 weren’t driving sales like they wanted.

There are no Carrier subsidies like there were in the past. That's why things are different now.

The point of this thread is that Apple has never promoted their phones by showing less than the full price, and that is wrong.

Apple has often promoted the iPhone at a subsidized price that did not reflect the full price.

No, you screen shot is clearly from the "Apple Store App" not the "Apple App Store"

Well I posted more than one screen shot. Like I said the push notification (which you reference above) is from the Apple Store app. The other is XR advertising in the App Store app.

No that’s not the point of this thread. Apple wasn’t showing trade-in adjusted prices for the XR and XS at launch. Sure the trade-in program isn’t new but Apple heavily advertising it is. The fact that they weren’t advertising it at launch but are doing so now indicates to me they’re not meeting sales targets and are looking for ways to boost sales.

I replied to this post. My point was the push advertising came from the Apple Store App, not the app store. You counter that there is advertising in the Apple App store. While correct, it is not relevant to the context of my reply to @thadoggfather .

Placing a an add in the App store is no more concerning than a billboard on the side of a road. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Or it's a seasonal promotion as an Apple employee told Apple Insider.

My take is that if they were actually worried, we would have seen Black Friday promotions from Apple on these phones (which we didn't).

I have no doubt Apple is looking for new ways to boost sales. The iPhone Upgrade Program was a new way to boost sales after the loss of carrier subsidies. Promoting the price of an iPhone at less than full price has been the norm for Apple until carrier subsidies disappeared. Apple is in effect using the GiveBack trade in as a replacement for carrier subsidies.

Also, keep in mind that Apple turns around and sells the trade-ins at a profit as refurbished phones.

So I wonder is this push notification considered an ad? Because App Store guidelines clearly state push notifications must not be used for marketing or promotions. I would argue it is because people on the IUP aren’t required to upgrade. They can keep the phone they have an eventually pay it off.

  • 4.5.4 Push Notifications must not be required for the app to function, and should not be used for advertising, promotions, or direct marketing purposes or to send sensitive personal or confidential information. Abuse of these services may result in revocation of your privileges.

We’ll see. Apple was not this aggressive last year which is why I’m inclined to think sales might be lagging this year. Another reason I think it’s a possibility is because Apple finally decided to stop reporting unit sales and they chose to do so during a Holiday quarter no less.

If you have notifications turned on for the Apple Store, what sort of notifications would you expect to receive? I'm sure anyone who was annoyed by it turned it off last year when they got a similar notification for iPhone 8 pre orders.

The terms for the iPhone Upgrade Program state "You may receive periodic iPhone Upgrade Program-related texts, emails, or other communications from Apple"

It's Q1 of a new year for Apple, so it makes sense to make the change at the start of the first fiscal reporting period.

Well Amazon needs to take note of this. I’ve been getting non-stop “12 Days of Deals” push notifications from the Amazon App.
