This was just an outage of a few days for a few people. No biggie. I still chuckle at those users for not even thinking about whether iCloud has any benefits to outweigh the drawbacks before jumping on board... but I'm sure the biggest laughs are still to come. :)

"ZOMG All my stuff synced automatically between my devithes! I don't have to plug sthtuff in anymore! Here Apple, take all my data and let me rely on you 100%!"

Got Apology, but...

I got the apology email. What's done it's done. i was without email for 30+ hours. While I am certainly angry at apple, I am also angry at MacRumors and other news/gadget sites. They did not report this at all, while it was an ongoing situation. It should have been on the front page along with iphone5, at least, from in the afternoon on that very same day.
With the traffic of sites like MacRumors or engadget, our voices could be heard. Maybe, just maybe, Apple would treat the problem of that 1.1% with a sense of urgency.
by publishing the apology letter on front page from mike today, after the fact, though validates the story, serves a lesser purpose.

Of course, I am not going to discredit those who worked hard at solving the issue during those hours. I know without their work, the service could be down even longer. Apple should of acknowledge the problem a lot sooner, and provided us with some sort of ETA. That will at least put us in the position to react and act. I hope whether to ditch icloud altogether is not the only lesson here.

Maybe I skimmed over, but someone's going to cite the irony of emailing an apology that your email is out, correct?

Look, I'd rather know some of the why, and why it won't happen the same way again.

another note

Many people like myself were paid members of the .Mac service nearly 10 years. We have used the .mac email for our primary email address and had no problems. $100 a year no problems...now free with lost emails. Here is my note from Apple. It acknowledges "lost" emails.

?? Is this the running joke, or are people serious with this repetitive post to any problem Apple encounters?

There have been data outages, stolen phones (as compared to leaks), Apple Store melt-downs during previous phone launches, Antenna Gate, 27 inch iMac screen issues (2010), 1.8 million battery recall (2006), that poorly conceived AppleTV . . . , a history of Cloud issues losing or improperly synching data. Just search the archives.

I lament Steve's passing as much as everyone. But to hold Tim Cook up to the standards of some fictionalized, omnipotent being, who apparently reigned over a flawless Apple, is unfair. Not to mention fatiguing.

Running joke.

I was out for 2+ days. .mac is my primary email address,I can't believe the amount of business that was lost because of this. I need more than an apology.

If you have important business, use a private server. It's more reliable and secure than a free service.

It's not non sense, it's my experience with it. And I'm sure there's mobileme/iCloud users who have had 0 downtime since mobileme in 2008 as well.

2 days just isn't acceptable. Apple even feels that way in their email. And those links still do not show Gmail being down for 2 days either.

It was about a week for me, maybe more. Definitely more than 2 days. Apple needs to get their act together with iCloud. It looks like a WIP. Whoever designed the Mail app on iCloud.com did a great job, though. It looks like the Mail in Mac OS.

You know, some of us did pay for iCloud if we got extra storage. I have the 25GB plan and my email was out for two days.

Ah, sorry. You're right.

(cost of extra storage per year) / 365 days in a year * x days of service out. = r refund

Tricky, to be sure.

As an iTools./.mac/MobileMe/iCloud subscriber who used to have extra storage as well, I know that Apple will show their superior intellect by, instead of simply using the above formula, taking the more challenging route of trying to justify why they shouldn't have to pay any refunds at all, as they've done it in the past.

still not fixed for me, some emails still have no body content and other emails received during the outage can not be deleted

No clue if mine was out or not. I signed up for an icloud email because it was an option during the service steps, and just to secure my name as an option, but have never used it. Hear stories way too often about outages to trust it. Gmail has never let me down in the 7-8 years of usage.

This was really annoying as I couldn't access my emails or even my iTunes connect account! I thought I was using the wrong password so I changed it a load of times when I didn't need to.

My only problem with the 1.1% is that I seem to be in that group each time. I would be curious about how many people reoccur in the group i.e. is it the same 1.1% all the time.

I have however now bookmarked the page that tells me if there is a problem with iCloud. That has saved me changing passwords/deleting and reinstalling accounts which is what I did the first time it happened. At least now I know it's a problem with iCloud as opposed to a problem with my mac.

If I can be bothered when there is a problem with mail I check my email on line which isn't as convenient but does at least work. When I got all hot and bothered about the recent outage I suddenly thought about all of the things that I take for granted i.e. all my idevices syncing automatically and effortlessly. This at least put the outage in its proper perspective, irritating but not that bad really when you take the advantages and disadvantages altogether. I am personal user rather than a business user. If I had money on it then I would look for a more secure solution. As it is I just didn't get my daily Amazon emails for a while!!!!
:D

someone better get fired

Tim Cook should find out who is responsible for this "just works" system, find out what went wrong, what to do to prevent this from happening again, and get the people who are responsible and get them STEVED...i mean,..fired.

!% er

I guess not only am I one of the 1%.... I also never received an apology email.

I am more upset about how the emails came in: randomly

I had several important email conversations I was involved in that I couldnt make heads or tails out of because they came in completely out of the order in which they were sent.

What would you expect?

I mean, it's hosted on Windows Azure platform, what else would you expect?

Windows server systems have more downtime compared to other systems because there are more patches and for most patches you need to reboot the server.

But seriously, at the keynote introducing Steve he made a quote on MobileMe: "We have made some mistakes there." Still, they do not seem to get it right. Why is it so hard for Apple to get this thing stable and online without frequent interruptions?

It's just as stable as any other cloud service.

I've been using gmail for maybe 6 years, never had it go down or not able to access my email

iCloud was never down for me too. So what? Aren't there more important topics to discuss other than WHAT SEEMS TO BE A PERFECTLY LOGICAL NOTION that a service that operates over a network connections maybe be down at some point in time for someone due to hardware failure, an act of God, end of the world or any other of 100 reasons.
