Calling a USB 2.0 cable in 2012 'Lightning' is a bit ridiculous if you ask me.

'Slimline Dock Connector' would be better, but lightning-speed it is not.

Remove the word dock and you're right (Apple seems to be anti-dock these days). Apple expects you to do everything wirelessly these days so it is pretty much the power cord but can also transmit data for people who are still using iTunes to maintain their iOS devices (I'm sorry if you are because man iTunes 10 is bad).

I had money prepared in my pocket to buy iPhone 5. But no NFC... Samsung has it, even almost dead Nokia has it. I use NFC daily and I'm dissapointed. I can wait whole another year or I will just buy a new Nokia 920, but problem is I like Apple and iOS. Why you doing this to me, Apple?

buy now and sell later. iphone 4S 64gb gets $400+... and at&t usually offers upgrade pricing after a year w/ renewed contract. problem solved.

Did you read the thread?

USB 2. The slow flash can't take advantage of USB 3 or thunderbolt.

But that doesn't stop people demanding USB 3. And Lightning is essentially protocol-agnostic, it is just a plug with nine contacts. Any protocol that can make do with nine contacts (and does not require active cabling) can in principle be channeled over the plug, it only depends on what the electronics the plugs connects with each other can do. The mDP connector can also transport two very different types of data connection: DP and TB

So, why not USB 3?
Wouldn't "USB3" depend on the device chipset and not the cable? Is there documentation somewhere that specifically says "Apple Lightning cables will always only support USB2. Never USB3 or Thunderbolt."?

Well, for my parking gate, in public transportation card (Prague OpenCard) and we have PayPass (or how you call it) system installed in a lot of supermarkets here in Czech Republic.
We have PayPass point-of-sale terminals here in some American stores as well, but nobody uses it. PayPass is the Mastercard NFC contactless payment system; PayWave is the Visa version.

There are NFC transit cards here in the USA, but as far as I know, there is no common standard at this point.

I agree with him, why spend all the money and real-estate inside the phone to incorporate something that's not even common out in public.

Sure it would be nice to have, but it would cost $$ to license the tech, engineer the space into the phone. Just not worth it right now.

NFC is insecure. There is already a hack where the attacker can hack your phone using NFC by just standing near you. No other connection with the phone needed. How cool is that!

I suspect that Apple will not use NFC and will instead use an optical approach. The shop keeper or taxi cab carries an optical scanner and when you pay the bill you display the necessary information in a code on the display, kind of like the mobile device boarding passes we use now.

Regarding wireless charging, I agree with many others. I don't see the use of it. Using the cable is not that hard and then I can use the phone (or iPad) while it is charging.

I agree in that I really hope NFC is not implemented. It doesn't add up as far as cost/benefit. I always get a kick out of those quickpass cards where you have to swipe the card right above the magnetic card reader. You saved yourself the hassle of putting the card in a slot! Woowoo!

As far as charging, wireless charging would be amazing if literally every desk or table surface was a wireless charger. The problem is that USB is the charging standard. Maybe wireless charging will be a standard some day but I'm not holding by breath.

The black iphone should also have a black lightning cable. Btw: the name is stupid. Do you say: 'where is my lightning cable?'
Your analogy doesn't make sense. You can still call it a "USB cable", just as many people do with the current iPhone cable. It still has USB on one end. You can also call it your "iPhone cable", just as many people do.

You also don't say "where is my Thunderbolt cable". You say "where is my DVI cable" or "Where is my HDMI cable".

Apple is the kind of company that could strongly influence a standard in the area if they wanted to. See FireWire, display port, tbolt, HTML 5 etc.

next innovation should be solar powered. not necessarily to never need to plug in to charge, but enough to extend the battery by a significant amount

Get organized then you won't have to ask: where is?

I have 3 iphone/ipad chargers around the house. I can probably make do with just using 1 of them for this new iphone 5. I have a bose sounddock....will need to get another one for that...
and car charges - 1 for each car - need to get two for that...

$120 just for adapters??????
You really should re-read what you just wrote. You have three chargers, at least one iPad, a Bose stereo, two cars, and you are considering buying the latest cell phone on day one. Yet, you are complaining about having to spend an extra $120.

I doubt anybody can. There are too many different systems, they are very expensive, and the difference is tiny.

We have Paypass here in Ontario and pretty much everyone uses it.

I supposed it depends on where you live in the USA. I moved here from Ohio and at that time, Ohio was just barely accepting debit cards in stores. Here in Ontario at that time, I was able to use my debit/credit card everywhere, even at fast food restaurants. Canada seems to be ahead of the curve somehow.

You're lying Phil, you're just making an excuse for an overpriced cable & adapter. If you really want thin then this should be the cable thinner than lightny http://goo.gl/QWoC0 and it's the standard.

micro usb is a joke. It can't send audio/video like an apple cable can, hence why droid devices have 2 different ports.

Thunderbolt needs far more pins.

Not saying one-to-one pin mapping. It seems to me like this port is just a generic serial data connection. Apple could make cables to convert that to other high speed data connections, just like they make Thunderbolt to Firewire and Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapters.
