I guess Apple wants us all to buy an Apple TV now to AirPlay video to our TV's since the new port does not support video out?

THIS SUCKS.

I don't mind change, I get it you need change....but for virtually no new features - not faster...?

I have 3 iphone/ipad chargers around the house. I can probably make do with just using 1 of them for this new iphone 5. I have a bose sounddock....will need to get another one for that...
and car charges - 1 for each car - need to get two for that...

$120 just for adapters??????

also with that the inability to go to my friends house and be compatible with their home set-ups for charging (I don't know about you guys - but im always glad everyone I know use apple products because they all have the same plug!)

I'll wait on this generation until the new plugs (lightning and the stupid magsafe 2) are more widely adopted.

too bad, I would love LTE and the A6 :(

You won't need an adapter if you are just charging. It comes with a lightning to usb cable that will plug into your usb chargers. You will only need an adapter for devices that have a 30pin connector, not a usb connector.

What I'm wondering is if the lightning to usb cable will allow me to control a new iPhone/ipod with my car stereo. I hope so.

Audio Out?

So does this new connector have audio out or not? If not what are the benefits over microUSB, other than being reversible and possibly slimmer?

If it does why does the adapter say no "iPod out"? I guess this means no audio out, this term seems designed to confuse. Does it mean if I use an iPhone 5 with an adapter in an old speaker dock it won't work? If so what the hell is the point of the adapter?

And the adapter only works with "some" 30-pin devices and does not support iPod or video out! Wonder what that means for Bose and all the other pricey speaker systems we all own?

Let me translate this for you:

It’s not clear that NFC is the solution to any current problem, Schiller said. "Passbook does the kinds of things customers need today."
We have not found a way to monetize this (aka... get our 30% cut), therefore we don't include this technology that we know it's going to be successful but we will work to change it so we can get out cut.
Passbook is just the software application for this in the future, and until then we can test how it goes for 'free'.

As for wireless charging, Schiller notes that the wireless charging systems still have to be plugged into the wall, so it’s not clear how much convenience they add. The widely-adopted USB cord, meanwhile, can charge in wall outlets, computers and even on airplanes, he said.
We cannot control this either, hence we wouldn't be able to decide who manufactures it (aka... licensing), so since we might not get our cut, we don't include it.

"Having to create another device you have to plug into the wall is actually, for most situations, more complicated," Schiller said.
We have to say that it is complicated because that's our message until we do the same, that's why we don't adopt the mini-usb standard among industry, so we can monetize the connector.

Why didn't they name it Lighting Bolt? Lighting sounds lameee.

It's all lame.

It should be called the new apple dock connector but then they don't have a jazzy marketable name

I have stereo docks so I'm afraid of breaking the little nub since its standing on it and creating a cantilever

If it adds no appreciable value then including it only adds cost and complexity. I'm glad they didn't bother with it. It's gimmicky.
(wireless charging)
I'm sure as soon as it makes its way to the iphone, everyone will say how great it is..

As to what Schiller said about it having less practicality since by plugging your phone to charge it you can plug it using usb, I'm sure the part that needs to be connected to wirelessly charge will also work with usb.

Seriously, it would have been or would be nice. I hate when my phone is charging and I get a call or need to make a call and it's stuck some other place in the house, or on my computer, or I can't talk and walk around at the same time, etc.
I see a real use for wireless charging.

But I guess it'll be in the 5s:
NFC
Wireless charging
12MP camera

Huh, because they still have to be plugged into the wall?

Well, unless they are developing an iHome (not the alarm), make a breakthrough in perpetual energy or improve solar technology to be small and efficient enough for a phone, then there isn't any other way.

My question exactly Pieira. I hope it means I can still connect the new iPhone to my 2012 Acura TL port and have the same functionality and control but I guess we will see. Probably means my iPod Dock Alarm Clock and such will be useless now though.

Can't you just get 1 or 2 adaptors and move them round the house?

Besides, in a few months' time there'll be unofficial adaptors on eBay for $2-3 a go.

30 pin to lightening adaper

The 30 pin to lightening adapter is showing up at the Apple Store now and it's $29! Not the $10 that had been previously rumored!
SHEESH! THAT'S A RIP OFF!

I'm calling BS on this. The lightning cable retails for $19 on their site right now. Being that the adapter is insanely huge, it's not practical for anything other than a cord adapter, meaning it would have to be less than the price of the cable itself. Apple is incredibly stupid!

LOL @ folks complaining about lack of USB 3.0. Who freaken cares? So you can sync faster? Setup wireless sync so that your phone just syncs when you charge it at night and then forget about ever needing to plug it into the computer again.

Not everything has it yet. An USB 2.0 plug works in a 3.0 port, but not the other way. So this is the safer way to go for now

Umm... I may be wrong, but I think most USB 3.0 devices are compatible with USB 2.0. At least, this USB 3.0 external disk drive I have on my desk seems to work a-ok in USB 2.0 ports (minus some speed).

So are we stuck with usb 2.0 for another 9 years?

I don't see why we would need to be. The 30-pin changed from firewire to USB so a change from USB2 to USB3 shouldn't be a big deal when they get around to it.

Is the flash memory speed fast enough to take advantage of USB3?

This is why wireless induction charging mats make no sense. You still have to plug in the mat (and carry it around), plus the mat takes up more desktop real estate than the phone and a regular charging cord (the Lightning Connector or the legacy Dock Connector cord).

And what about the iPad? Would you need an even larger charging mat?

Wireless charging

I'm not so sure about the 12-megapixel camera.

We're probably approaching the point of minimal additional benefit. Cellphone camera lenses are very small and 8-megapixels is probably around the limits of resolving power for such a small lens and sensor. Even if you increased the pixel count, you might not be capturing more detail because of the resolving power (which is finite). Furthermore, more pixels risk increasing digital image noise.

More beneficial would be improved sensors, especially in regard to low-light sensitivity as well as power consumption.

Also, more megapixels mean larger file sizes, which translates to longer network transfer times.
