I am disappointed, neither Apple nor AT&T has offered me any compensation. I haven't asked for any yet (I will), but I was kind of hoping they would try and make it right on there own.

Summary of my story: I went through hell these past couple of days with Apple and ATT. Preordered my iPhone, got it delivered the 21st. It was someone else's phone. When I tried to activate it, the number listed was an area code out of state. ATT tried to just switch the sim, but in order for this to work, the phone first had to be activated. This wasnt possible as in order to activate it, I needed the last four of the social security and billing zip from the random number on the phones account holder. Went to Apple store on ATT's recommendation. They couldnt do anything. Had a manager helping me, and even ATT employees, as they had them in the store for launch day. Told me they couldnt do anything in store because it was an online order. Left, called Apple support, and although they were nice and apologetic, they again had no fix for the problem. They forwarded the problem to engineering, and I waited. The guy told me he hoped to have the problem resolved by next Thursday. I just laughed at this, as either I was returning the phone, or having the problem resolved one way or another by the next day (yesterday). I figured it was a simple solution, manually reprogram the IMEI and serial number on Apples end to match my number and not the number of the random guy in a different state.

I decided to call the number that kept showing up in my phone. Turns out he had the same problem as me, and he had my phone, in Virginia. After endless calling between each other, Apple and ATT, our only solution was to exchange the last four digits of our social and billing. Activate each others phones, and then switch the sim back to our own lines. Finally, just finished dealing with everything, and can finally enjoy the new phone.

Note: Apple and At&t did not even resolve the problem. Myself and the other person who had my phone in Virginia did.

I should have done that by calling the phone number and seeing if the other person had my phone, but it's not my responsibility to track Apple's mistake, it is their problem. The manager I am dealing with apparently does not work weekends but I sent him a message yesterday spelling out my dissapointment with A) The lack of Apple assuming responsbility for their problem, and B) The lack of any resolution.

I have since already sent the phone back to Apple so at this point I can not just switch it out myself. We'll see what I am told tomorrow.

I had the same problem. Kind of. I added a new dummy line and the new number was already associated to someone else's account. (Purchased from AT&T) the rep told me I had to take it to an AT&T store and have them set me up with a new number. Credited me $35.

So after i went to the at&t store, replaced the sim card with my information the problem was still apparent. i spent 3 hrs on the phone with customer support from apple and att. i went home and tried to install ios6 from scratch with my new sim card and that didnt work. ultimately, the att rep told me to go into the apple store and get my phone swapped out.

the genius bar and att reps at the store repeated the troubleshooting process with replacing the sim, and reinstalling ios6. the phone still showed up with the original customer's name. so with the new sim, and fresh new OS the problem was still there.

after all that time i spent with the representatives, they decided to get me a whole new OEM replacement. i didnt have a problem with it because the ip5 was just released, and i knew it was a new phone, not a refurbished ip5. went through the activation process flawlessly and started using the phone immediately.

gist of the story is that the activation server ties the customer's information with the phone's IMEI number and for some reason it would not update the phone i recieved from UPS. so they had to swap the phone with a whole new phone with a IMEI that was not associated with any customer.

sucks to have all that time wasted for something that was not my fault.

Absolutely man. Same thing happened to me. Apple in Orland Park, IL swapped me a brand new iPhone 5 as it was an exchange and set it up without any problems.

There was someone in SC waiting all day for the Fed Ex truck to arrive, and it never did. At least you know what happened. That poor sucker has no clue where their phone is nor when it will arrive. I wonder how many hours they spent on the phone with Apple.

Actually I had posted on the Apple Community yesterday, and 1 reply came last night from who I believe was the person we got swapped with....he said he got one for someone in Florida, so it may be mine... However within about 30 minutes after that post Apple deleted the thread for violation the TOS before I had a chance to reply... maybe he'll find this thread because he said he is going through the same thing.

Just a quick update... Apple said they have moved our phone to the front of the line for a replacement...hopefully going out within the next 24-48 hours...but I didn't like the sound of his confidence...and i'm still left with a bad taste in my mouth over this.

This Exact Thing Happened to Me Too

I had this happen to me too. So frustrating. And AT&T gave me the last 4 of the other guy's social! I thought that was crazy they would tell me that. And they gave him my info too. Totally unsecured. I did get a free month of service from AT&T, so that's something. I wrote about the whole experience here, if you want to know the whole ridiculous story:

This exact same thing happened (is happening) to me, complete with the supposed fix tomorrow of receiving a new SIM card to fix the problem, despite the fact that I've already tried this solution at a Verizon store.

I will say everyone I have talked to has been extremely helpful and supportive - but the folks at the Verizon store had absolutely no clue what was going on.

On a hopeful note - if anyone out there is looking for a 914 area code phone or has my 757 area code phone we can work to fix this..

Anyhow we got our issue resolved by going in to the apple store and getting a swap out. We could not do a direct return because the serial number is registered to the order person and he would get a credit back to his account. ANyhow we worked around it by returning the item to a gift card and then repurchasing a brand new iphone using the gift card.

So if you got someone elses number on your phone..the only way to get it fixed is to get a new phone. A sim card swap will not work.

Good to know if anyone has issues in the future that they need to get a new phone.

Happy to say that we received shipping confirmation this morning and we should have a replacement on Thursday. UPS shipping shows it coming straight from ZhengZhou, China.

This is happening to me right now!

I just got my new iPhone 5 today and its a 16 gb, but I ordered a 32 gb. After being on the phone with Apple for an hour, they told me to use the phone while they sent out a new one. This whole time I had no idea that the 16 gb wouldn't work until finally I plugged it into iTunes. Anyway, went down to the Apple store and was there for several hours but to no avail. They wouldn't even switch it out with one in the store because of the issue with it being a 16 gb when I had paid for a 32. Wtf? They told me to go home and call Apple again in the morning.
Someone out there with the phone number 732-857-6xxx has my 32 gb and I think is trying to activate it because I've gotten an email with a case number that I never instigated. But without this person's social and zip code I can't do anything.
Seriously Apple? I mean I get that stuff happens but it's pretty ridiculous that we can't get this fixed.

Sucks to here the issues, but in anything there is a chance of screw ups. Just sucks when you really really want it... Reason when I really want something I go stand in line. Hate putting it in other people's hand... Hope u all get fixed quickly

I just had this happen to me today. Wasted 3 hours today because of Apples mistake. So pissed. But, mine is a little worst then everyone else. The person who was suppose to receive my phone says they never received the package. They have reported it to UPS as lost. Apple says they need to report this to their "engineers" to solve my problem. I am just gonna go rage at the Apple store tomorrow. I better walk out of the Apple Store tomorrow with an iPhone and something else to compensate for them wasting my time. Or I will trash the store. Dead serious. So, if you see me on the news. It's because Apple refused to solve THEIR mistake.

Will it make you feel a little bit better to know that you made me laugh? Good luck!

I would save your laugh for the 9 O'clock news. Because from what I have seen is that Apple doesn't own their mistake. They make you return it. That *************. They will have a problem with me if they dont resolve my problem within 20 mins tomorrow. I paid $330 and they are not gonna give me a phone. *** them! "We will have are engineers look at it" *****?
