MacRumors has heard several reports of Apple sending out engineers to the homes of users experiencing unique problems in an attempt to research them for fixes.

I don't understand the people that think this is fake. A bazillion dollar company with locations all over the world can't send a couple guys to a house to check out a problem?

Then there are those who have been using Apple products for decades (yes plural), who remember a time where quality control and user experience was paramount. We stick with Apple because they're still the best. They themselves, set a high standard and holding them to this, is probably what they'd want and expect from us. It's the apologists who except mediocrity, are the ones who should switch and leave.

I agree that accountability and having high standards is good, but this particular issue (that iTunes or Apple Music was auto deleting user files) never sounded all that likely even as a "glitch", much less an intentional strategy employed by Apple.

People wants things to go wrong so that they can post on a forum - right. Yes, I want all of my calendar entries to have all of their dates and times scrambled so that I can get loads of hits here on MacRumors. Get a grip man.

I'm specifically referring to the people who come on here every day and post about how they hate Apple these days and how they haven't liked them for an extended period, or they never have a good experience anymore. It goes well beyond wanting improvements. But hey, thanks for coming at me with a personal attack. I hope it brings something to your life.

The problem is Apple and their secretive appearance which lacks product vision, QA vision, roadmap, or any clue about what to expect from them. Of course, in the past they wowed people at every point. Now they are not, so the PR has to step up and try to make up for poor performance. Which is easier, put out some PR or change the way Apple has slipped in performance. Experience tells me that PR is easier and appears to work better in the short term. But the problem is that skeptics don't believe the PR and Fanboys do. That is what you see here.

If Apple improved their performance and scaled back the PR just a bit, the skeptics would have to take a back seat. Right now it is Apple that is fueling the negative attitudes. And in my opinion they are deserved.

On topic: this is phenomenal. The guy lost loads of data and Apple saw that, sympathized and took responsibly. More companies should be like this. Google. Sam, Microsoft, keep your eyes open.

If this was a standard procedure; sure! It'd be wonderful! Meanwhile I, and users on a 44-page thread about an iOS syncing problem, didn't get visits from Apple engineers. I emailed Tim a few times explaining the problem, sending logs, much like other users on the Apple support thread and AFAIK the problem was never fixed.

It's great they sent engineers this once but I'd love it to be a regular thing, some kind of remote diagnostic unit. It should definitely be a thing.

Yea, there's always been people criticizing every little thing about Apple and their products, just go and visit the thread for the original iPod unveil, you could replace "Steve Jobs" with Tim Cook in some of the negative comments from then and it would sound just like today's trolls. The difference is the ratio, endless negativity and snark has overtaken the friendlier community aspect that used to exist when Apple was a much smaller company.
The friendlier community aspect went away at the same time "nonsense, mine works perfect, you're a troll" took its place

I wish that the people who just come here to talk about how much they no longer like Apple would grow up and actually switch platforms. But they won't. They don't ACTUALLY want things to be different because at present they have an excuse to endlessly complain.

Strongly worded, but I agree that a large portion of the MacRumors user base should really consider solutions from other companies. They would be much, much happier.

I don't know why anyone is surprised about this. Some guy with a mediocre blog gets national attention because he "claimed" that iTunes lost his music and that an account rep told him that was what it was supposed to do.

IDK if either of those things are true, but it got reported. So why is Apple evil to go there and show that it can't be reproduced? Even if they gussy it up and say "we're sure it wasn't user error" we all know that they fully expected to not get it to happen again.

When you have a multi-billion dollar brand, it makes total sense to me to send two guys out to put an end to what is most likely a person trying to make a name for themselves by claiming something sensational happened.
 
They couldn't find what they were looking for by staying in Cupertino and using a combination of SSH and screen sharing? Seems like a PR stunt to me.

I guess I'm an "apologist that accepts mediocrity" because all my Apple products work pretty well for me, I don't get mad over the few things that don't work well for me, and I simply buy non-Apple products when I'm not impressed with whatever Apple offers.

If Apple products ever came close to making me feel as irrationally angry as they do for some people on these forums, I would never buy another Apple product. Electronic devices aren't worth flipping out over, especially with all the choices we have out there.

I agree the undertone has become more negative over the years. This is because slowly but surely their releases have given you less for more.
People that have been using their kit for years and almost exclusively their kit are starting to get annoyed. They feel they are being loyal and that all Apple are doing in return is squeezing margins and creating lockins.

Wrong. I've just put a few examples of the tone around here lately choosing from the present thread. If you want to check, one of the posters quoted regularly labels other members in a way that is not liable for reporting, but enough offensive for my taste. Even if we don't personally know each others, I can assure you that I'm far far away of being "irrationally angry" either on tech gadgets or in real life. Freedom of speech first, without others telling you to leave because you're not blindly bowing to their assumptions.
And speaking of freedom, you're obviously free to think whatever you want about me.

Hey, this is great for potential home and ID thieves.

They can just grab their buddies, go to someone's house, claim to be Apple engineers... and not only get invited inside, but get full access to their computer files.

This unfortunately already happens with ne'er do wells impersonating cops, teleco, power company employees, and when it does grabbing computer files would be the least of my worries.

Or are you saying apple engineers/employees will go through your hard drive and files?
 



A couple weeks ago Vellum's James Pinkstone wrote on his blog that Apple Music and iTunes Match deleted 122 GB of his personal music collection. The post kicked off a wave of speculation about whether Apple Music intentionally deletes users' music. Apple eventually confirmed that the deletion was a glitch and that a fix was incoming. Today, Pinkstone wrote a blog post detailing how two Apple engineers named Tom and Ezra visited his home to try to recreate the problem.

Before they arrived, Pinkstone said that Apple told him a couple of things: Amber, the Apple Support Representative who told him the music deletion glitch was a "feature" functioning as intended, was mistaken and the company was convinced the issue wasn't user error.

The engineers spent the day at Pinkstone's house researching the issue, telling Pinkstone to use Apple Music, iTunes and his personal library as he would in the past. The next day, Tom returned to collect the data logs and cleared any evidence of him being on the laptop. Apple's engineers weren't able to recreate the problem, though Pinkstone notes that they did think the issue was a glitch that needed to be combatted. Yesterday's iTunes 12.4 update includes safeguards to protect users from the music deletion bug.

Pinkstone's Apple engineer visit is a good example of how far the Cupertino company will go to try to correct bugs in its products. Unfortunately the sr engineers wanted me to use all three backup drives to restore knowing full well Yoseite was burning out drives. 6 years of music gone. Now even purchased and Apple Music have bad metadata. I've tried all sorts of third party software, right now TunesGo, but nothing helps. Executive suupport intercepted a letter to legal and tcook won't respond. Engineers say it must be changed by hand and will not admit anything. Now Britini Woods has locked up my account so no one can help since she has it. Any ideas on what to do now?
