Short memory; Apple never first to market.
Except when they do come to the market, in the past they provided a superior product. Siri is not a superior product and just because they never did before means they should keep that mentality because they're facing increased competition.

If you can't beat them, join them?
I personally don't think that mentality applies in this instance. The implications for AI goes far beyond Siri, Cortana, Google Now and selling phones. This is more a chance for the rising tide to lift all boats. Take my good idea, your good idea, his good idea, and couple that with her good idea and we build something that benefits everyone. A bit pollyanna but hey, on this collab, I'm definitely a glass half full kinda guy. I'm glad they did it.

Just think how much more in tech could be done if we really did that.

Given how Siri is less capable then GoogleNow and Cortana, They're needing to work harder at this.

I mean Amazon caught them (and Google) flat footed with their home assistant, something that could have been a perfect fit for Apple.

Obviously, because Siri has undergone only incremental improvement since its original Beta. Why?
  1. Absence of Context: no such thing as "conversational" Siri. It is simply "one-and-done" like a line-at-a-time, command parser (if lucky).
  2. Absence of Personalization: lack of personal modeling.
To achieve synthetic "intelligence" there has to be short and long-term memory, coupled with complex, goal-oriented problem solving.

Apple has to know this. What is puzzling to me is their inaction.

That's one thing that would never have happened under Steve :p

If Steve was half as good as people make him out to be, he would understand that as a CEO, he has to adapt to the changing dynamics of the markets Apple operates in.

This is a similar pattern. Apple has for years come up with great ideas, but failed to implement them from scratch, so they have had to either buy finished products like NextSTEP and other components and tools.

Google and Microsoft's data mining is no secret. Personally I'd rather the 'assistant' on my phone was a little dumber if it meant the company considered my privacy paramount.

I, too, applaud Apple’s respect for privacy/anonymity. However, I don’t understand why it’s a matter of isolating the AI on each device. Super computers will ultimately be required to process sophisticated tasks. Anonymity can be protected by other means.

Privacy is ultimately guaranteed by the contract between you and the service provider. Frankly, most people that complain about data mining surrender their protection voluntarily in exchange for “free” services or entertainment.

Sweet. Artificial Intelligence could produce amazing results.

The problem I have is Arificial Sentience. Let's hope they write code, not synaptic function.

They use AI in a lot of other places - like picture search, works pretty good.

Siri: did you call for me?

I use it to set timers/alarms when I'm cooking, call/text people while I'm driving, or ask it to open Maps and direct me somewhere. That's about it really and it seems to work fine on my older 5S.

Granted I don't use it for much more than that and I'm not doubting there are issues when you go above and beyond what little I do. However Siri does make my life easier for what I use it for. Personally I think the old girl gets a bad rap. She's not mindblowing but she's far from utterly useless either.

The only real issue that affects an otherwise content relationship is lack of offline functionality and poor performance when Wi-Fi or 4G isn't readily available.

I am from the south of the Netherlands and we speak with an accent; you have no clue what answers I get when using Siri. It is funny and sad at the same time, but I would rather refer to her as AS (artificial stupidness) then AI.

As long as they base the kernel on the Three Laws of Robotics then I shall welcome our new robot overlords.

I'm from Michigan and when I speak with virtually no accent (relative to Californians) you have no clue what answers I get when using Siri.

With every new iOS version I try Siri a few times and just give up. It's useless to me.

Great, now maybe they can give it up with Apple Maps and use the already and continually way better Google Maps.

Simple logic good here no fancy AI needed.

Smart move for Apple to follow the leaders under the guise of collaboration to steal their secret sauce.

LOL. Not only that, but exactly what is being worked on as a "Collaborative Product?" Guidelines, Standards, "I won't if you won't?"
Every one of these companies will have "Secret Sauce" in Secret Places at all times. To think otherwise is to be non compliant with reality. :apple:

Using all three, I'd say GoogleNow and Cortana are superior and Siri's limitations are quite evident.

Edit, by the way, I fixed your quote tags, it seems xen doesn't like then ending of a quote tag to be bolded :)

I haven't used GoogleNow but definitely agree with you on Cortana. I was impressed with Siri until I started using Cortana. Seems way better and weirdly gets better over time. As if she's collecting data and learning. Wait a minute...

You probably aren't using Siri, I guess? Any dumber..........

Sometimes one does not need look past the operator of a device to see the problem...

Is AI really for the common good?

Yes, particularly with driving. There's far too many people on the roads that just don't care about anybody but themselves, and many more without the skills to operate a vehicle safely.

This is a good example of when to use a Serif typeface in your logo. AI in a sans-serif face looks like the word "Al" (the name). Every single time. At least this logo used Ai so you don't mis-read it. (Can you tell I'm a typographer? LOL)
