What on earth is this once-great company doing? The last thing the world needs is another pointless bargain bucket TV streaming service.

Sooner or later another company is going to start producing a decent range of nicely-designed laptops and desktops with a Linux- or UNIX-based OS to rival Mac OS X (or whatever it's called nowadays), then Apple will finally work out what they've been doing wrong since Jobs died, at which point it will be too late.

Maybe you should start this new company since apparently you have it all figured out. Hopefully your company can beat them to the $1 trillion market cap since they are going downhill. If only Steve was still around to save this company...

All Apple need to do is enter the market at the high end, pay everyone, literally everyone for everything and have the subscription at the high end too, Sports to be separate to TV/Movies though. ''Everything from everywhere, on every device''. The market has many middle of the road, miss this, miss that type services. Go all in on content and use the TV app as the front end.

And how much would Apple pay to deliver "everything from everywhere on every device"?

And then do the math to figure out how much we consumers would have to pay Apple to cover that cost PLUS Apple's margin?

And then see if we are all ready to pay that much.

Can you imagine if every show/ movie they make is about a feature? Hahhahhahah! Show names be like:

Beat Siri to naming a song
Are you faster than an airport base station?
Mail something before Mail
Go on a Safari

I Married an iMac
Lost in Spaceship Office
Aloo-min-ium Chef With Jony Ive
WWDC Death Match

Could they like.... Update the iPad mini or update the Mac Mini instead? Do something related to their core business rather than something that Netflix will do better.

I'm guessing this will happen around 2132. Until then I'm along for the ride.

Coca Cola will realized it's been doing it all wrong all along in 2095. Because nothing lasts forever.

Apple making tons of money (which they do almost nothing with) from iPhones is not what everyone desires.

Many longtime Apple fans keep wondering whatever happened to Apple, the computer company.

It's likely extra free content for an Apple Music subscriber like myself. What's not to like?

Yep. One more step would be to stream movies like they stream music. That would put them on a par with Amazon Prime. Original content would be icing on the cake. I recently switched my Apple Music subscription to the $99/yr level. That’s $8.25/month. I would gladly pay $10/month for Music, Movies, original content. Throw in some iCloud data and that’s a winner.

Considering their track record so far, I suggest they give me the $1billlion, I'll keep half and burn the other half and they'll be money ahead.

Nostalgia always looks great in the rearview mirror doesn’t it?

So will we be able to watch these shows with our Music subscription, or will we have to pay extra to watch them?

Umm..nope. Boost content on itunes to 4k. To make an apple streaming package viable as an apple service only, it'd have to offer some compelling baked in features.

Hulu live tv is a mess. Tried it for a week and felt like strangling myself. They want 63 a month for that garbage? DirectvNow is slightly better but only slightly. I do feel like Apple could step in and make something much better but I dunno..buy TIVO or something. They need a guide and some kind of UI that's not a PIA.
[doublepost=1502883516][/doublepost]Coming soon...10 dollar 4k itunes movie rentals. Apple really wants to boost that. Please rent. Oh, here's an original episode of Planet of the Apps...free with your purchase..

Playstation Vue has been pretty good if you are looking for a streaming service. Been using it for about 6 months.

I like seeing Apple moving into this market. Any competition for Netflix and Amazon will eventually drive prices lower for each subscription. But I would also like to see Apple move into making movies as well. Just think of all the product placement they can do! : ) I would just hope they wouldn't hire cheesy movie directors, and end up going the SyFy route to making movies. bring in quality writers and directors, and begin by making quality movies.

I would suggest they partner with the Marvel and DC competition out there ( if there are any ) and make a few super hero movies. Those seem to be the wave of future movie making. It seems like every other movie now-a-days is a super hero flick, or a movie having something to do with Las Vegas! : )

That's it!! Make a super hero movie with Las Vegas being the backdrop!

Big money!!

PS - I guess there is "Image Comics" and "Valiant Comics" they could partner with.

Apple should just buy the MGM back catalog to start with, start off with something classic instead of the current BS that Apple is producing.

This seems ridiculous.

Apple is grabbing onto a dissolving paradigm. What they should be doing is displaying and selling others' content, much like iTunes, instead of buying and holding. Yesterday's and today's culture is going to swirl like a turd very shortly due to societal upheaval; TV ratings are falling off a cliff, movie revenues are a never-ending slope to oblivion. Offer the stuff in a central, well-planned, marketplace and take a percentage.

Don't attempt to become something you can never be, Apple. Your idea of culture isn't "hot", and it is niche at best. Follow the Jobs paradigm he created with iTunes, but do it with video content. And focus on computers foremost.

The first thing Jobs understood was that you need to keep developers and creatives sweet with a decent range of Macs, because as soon as those people start leaving then the whole house of cards comes crashing down.

The second thing Jobs understood was that you need to focus on a small number of specific things and do them brilliantly, not just copy (badly) what everyone else is doing because you lack the vision to do something better - their TV offerings being a prime example of the latter.

Nowadays there's nothing in Apple's product line to differentiate it from any other company, with the exception of the one thing they always excelled at - computers - and they're weakening that side of things to the point where it is becoming feasible for a competitor to beat them at their own game in that area. Once they lose that vital core userbase of developers and creatives, the rest of their users will start peeling away like layers off an onion.

"...but its share of the movie rental-and-sales market has declined to less than 35 percent from 50 percent in 2012."

Really? That's interesting, because I'm renting from iTunes (via AppleTV) more than ever. I could be the odd person, but I don't think so.

That does not mean there aren't some hiccups. First, I don't like adding movies to my wish list, only to have them disappear ("no longer available"). Once a show is added to the iTunes library, it needs to be permanent. This is not friggin Netflix. The 2nd issue I have is movies in iTunes being available only for purchase and not for rent (I'm looking at you Disney). Studios: Get off your damn high horse and make your movies available for rent. The 3rd and final issue I have is purchases. While I'm fine renting movies from Apple, I almost never purchase them. Why would I want to purchase a show at full price when it's wrapped up in DRM and can only be played from an Apple device? No thanks. I purchase Blu-ray discs (for the same price or less) and rip my own.

Apple, original content might sound fun, but it won't make any difference. What you need is more content from more studios, and start taking the AppleTV seriously. The fact that ATV-4 was not a 4k device is rather pathetic.

Hey Apple, how about diversifying your computing line instead of venturing into this horse shaving cream?

All this HS talk I hear about "Apple focus", and they're going all over the place like "content".

I want better, more flexible, more upgradeable, REAL PRO hardware from Apple than the stuff they already sell, sold alongside the current stuff for those that like thinness and lightness over capability.

It will take Apple 2-3 years of developing and releasing shows just to get to where Amazon Video was 2-3 years ago. At least it's a start, though, so I guess I will say it's "better late than never."

$1B is like a drop in the bucket compared to what other streaming services are spending on original content. Why not just up the ante and use some of that $200B war chest to just buy out Netflix or some other service? Would seem like a better investment.

Why do people keep suggesting this? Netflix does not fit the Apple profile. Apple likes fat margins and high profit. Besides the ready made streaming, it's one of the reasons they acquired Beats. Fat margins and high profit.
Apple approximately runs 38% gross profit and 20% net profit. Netflix? Around 31% gross profit and - wait for it - 3% net profit. I don't see Apple wanting any parts of that.

No need to be a copycat. There is plenty of original and compelling content, but from many scattered sources.

MY SAMPLE GUIDE:
  1. NBC (nbc.com): The Blacklist, Blindspot, Shades of Blue, Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D., Chicago Med, Timeless
  2. ABC (abc.go.com): Designated Survivor
  3. FOX (foxnow.com): Lethal Weapon, Rosewood
  4. Showtime (showtimeanytime.com): Billions, Ray Donovan, Homeland, Brotherhood
  5. HBO (hobo.com): Game of Thrones, Westworld, Deadwood, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, Tracey Ullman’s Show, Ballers
  6. Starz (starz.com): Outlander, Black Sails
  7. TNT (tntdrama.com): Good Behavior, Animal Kingdom, The Last Ship
  8. Sundance Now (sundancenow.com): The Bureau
  9. USA (USANetwork.com): Shooter
  10. History (history.com): Vikings, SIX, Forged in Fire
  11. FX (fxnetworks.com): The Americans
  12. NBCSports (nbcsports.com): English Premier League (EPL)
  13. TV5Monde (usa.tv5monde.com): French Cinema/News/Documentaries
  14. Comedy Central (cc.com): South Park
The sources aren't as scattered as you think. Comcast owns NBC, USA, and NBC Sports. Disney owns ABC. CBS/Viacom owns Showtime and Comedy Central. Time Warner owns HBO and TNT. Comcast/Disney own History Channel. That's only a small sample. So you're right, there's plenty of content. Very few owners of that content. They control the flow.

I personally have switched to Amazon for my movie rentals. A lot are at no extra charge through my Prime subscription, but it is also very convenient to be able to watch them on almost any device since Amazon's apps work just about everywhere.

Well I'm based in the UK, Netflix is £60 PY, Amazon Prime is £70 PY. The monthly service charges for Sky as a complete package is £31 + £6 Movie add ons, Sky Sports is £18. BT Sport is £5 but you 'must' have a Broadband Package, their iOS App is great, but say they want a wedge for a stand alone service say £18 (same as Sky sports). TV Licence is £147 for BBC but Apple wouldn't get any of that so can't include it in pricing.

5 + 5.83 + 31 + 6 + 18 + 18 = £83 Per Month, for literally everything video wise. If they threw in Family Apple Music into that then it's not 'too' expensive and it just makes it easy for people, convenience of having everything. The great thing is the ''everything on every device'' isn't hard to do, it's 3 apps, Mac, iOS and TV. It's really just a content front end.

I'd rather Apple create a content front end that is convenient than blow fortunes attempting to create content and a service from the ground up.

Tried them all. Vue was the most consistently reliable.

And longer rental period (48 hours).
