Must be very good news for Cook to give everyone company-wide 3 extra paid days off.

The pace they've been going at for the past 5 years has been *insane*. They've had a buck or two of success.

I say let them have two weeks off. :)

You have to figure that he will talk about the 4S sales and give some prelim numbers. Why? Because the numbers are going to be better than any phone in history. They won't be able to stop from touting about how successful their "disappointing" phone is.
Get real.

Apple doesn't make many forward-looking statements. On top of that, their quarterly earnings guidance has been consistently low.

If you think Apple Inc. is going to brag about how well the iPhone 4S is selling, you know pretty much nothing about how Apple Inc. operates.

They are the quintessential "under promise, over deliver" poster child of high tech.

If this is a pure play investment, the answer is no.

If this purchase is part of a highly diversified investment strategy, sure, why not?

I wouldn't sink more than 5% of my capital in one company.

Since you had to ask the question, my gut feeling is to tell you to read up on investments and forget asking people on the Internet for investment advice.

I disagree.

I say there is a very good chance that they will mention the iPhone 4s launch sales.

If they do, they won't quantify it in dollars. Which essentially makes it a useless quote beyond PR value.

It's fine for them to post fluffy PR announcements on their website that don't really claim anything concrete. It's another thing to walk into a financial analysts conference call with hard numbers.

Apple will not do that. Steve wouldn't, Oppenheimer wouldn't, Cook wouldn't. Tim might make an oblique reference to it, but then again, I'm not even sure if he'll show up. He might just let Petey field this one himself.

I meant should I throw all my money on apple before this earnings report. If it is good, which i believe it will be, it will rise, and then I will just sell it while making a bit of money. I don't plan on investing long term with expensive companys since I aint rich.

It may just be product launches, but Apples stock price usually drops a bit after any announcement & then creeps back up again afterward. If you're going to shake & bake, you may want to wait for the dip. Buy low.

No. Apple's year-end is in September (it changes a little each year since it's based on the last Friday of the week vs. a standard date like September 30). Apple might put out a press release with some preliminary information about the iPhone 4S, and might talk about it a little, but it won't be included in their earnings for the quarter.

Unfortunately, one question that won't be asked this time is Steve Jobs' health. :-(

Maybe they can let Siri answer the questions this time...!

At this point, it's pretty much already baked into the current share price. If anything, the share price is probably on the high side due to the hype around the very successful launch of iPhone 4s.

It's unlikely you'll pick much up in the short haul here.

I've held Apple Stock in the past (for 1-2 year stretches at a time.) I don't currently hold any. I think Apple has a big upside though. It's all about picking the right time to hop on board, and the right time to cash out.*

Hmm, Google just reported their result for the quarter. Per Forbes:

Funny thing is, no one ever talks about the "Google Tax."

Google is not selling Android for money directly.

i.e. Samsung has got an operating system for free and charges their customers even more.

The products don't care how much they are sold for.

If you are in the right circles, people talk a lot about the Google tax.

Somehow Apple is able to build an iPhone for $100 less then Samsung can build their Galaxy S2 from virtually the same components. Why - because they buy in bulk by the billions UP FRONT for CASH.

Unlike Apple, Samsung actually MAKES most of those components Apple is forced to buy up in bulk for cash.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A334 Safari/7534.48.3)

Well done Apple ! Can I please have a little percentage of the profit.

It's a publicly owned company. You can buy shares and become an owner. They don't pay dividends though.

Except Samsung makes a lot of their own parts which means they can inflate their bill of materials to whatever they want it to be but it really costs them much less

Just because samsung make thier own components, it don't mean they are free. The components devision will still charge the phone devision, albeit at a cheaper price.

Well, since you're asking these kind of questions, I suggest you educate yourself on the basics of investing before you dive it. It doesn't sound like you have grasped the fundamentals of risk assessment (at least regarding the stock market).

I recommend that you start by reading The Battle for Investment Survival by Gerald Loeb.

Good luck.

I'm no investor but the one thing I know is investing in stocks is best if done over the long term. ie 5+ years. These day or week traders just get themselves burnt more often then not.

Unless I'm reading this wrong (I got a C in Economics 101), that's a 25.5% profit margin.

Not too bad. It speaks of an incredible mark-up over cost for Apple's products. Is that the "Apple Tax"?

Do you know what Microsoft's margins are? Their gross margins can be as high as 60%. Is that the "Microsoft Tax?"

Agreed. Macbook Pros and Mac Pros?

I also don't think Apple regularly releases new products in the months of November and December so October is the month for the final hurrah.

Don't bet on the Mac Pro - its days are seriously numbered. I think Cook and Apple at this point only care about the iphone and the laptops + ipad.. Maybe the imac and mac mini, but mac pro, I have to say a resounding NO.
