So people understand that server load is probably the issue, yet they try "a dozen times" anyway? 🙄

How ever did humans survive this long? 🤐

They always have a massive influx of new device activations on Christmas Day.. You'd think they would have prepared for this by now.

You're assuming there's something more that Apple could be doing.

An internet connection is an "inter-network" connections. Essentially many networks interconnected together.

Delays and problems can be introduced at any point between A and B.

I'm the OP from yesterday.

This is now resolved for me. I was able to activate and set up both kids' Apple Watch SE.

Walkie-talkie invite doesn't work (either direction), but I don't think that is related.
Walkie talkie has never worked reliably or consistently. I don’t know anyone who uses it.

Same issue here. Trying to do Family Setup for an Apple Watch SE for my son. I choose to reset encrypted data for my son and get the message in the attached screenshot on the phone using to set up. Still not able to complete set up.

So maybe Apple should choose better its providers.
And maybe you should admit that you are looking for yet another reason to complain about Apple and that you are using this upset over "Not being able to sign into iCloud" as a front to just complain about Apple. I hope it goes down again to keep you hair triggered people in a holding pattern for a while.

I don't like people like you and ill refrain from ever replying to a post of yours going forward.

The holiday season has been the highest-revenue quarter for Apple for a long time now. That's a double-edged sword — it means lots of money for Apple (which they are clearly into, hence running holiday ads and all), but it also means some infrastructure peaks.

People are receiving their holiday gifts, and they do not work out of the box. At all. That's basically contrary to the stereotypical "it just works" Apple promise. If you're confused that a thread about this has some people "complaining", I don't know what to tell you. Try giving your significant other a gift and seeing how they react when it becomes a frustrating and futile evening of ad-hoc tech support. Odds are you'll prefer going with the socks+perfume route again next year.

To be clear, iCloud is only tangentially related to this.

ok cool

May I ask a slightly different iCloud related question here? I don't own an Apple watch, but I was wondering if my issue might be related to something similar.

I recently subscribed to Apple Music, what I didn't realize before doing so was as part of the service any music I have locally imported on the Mac is uploaded to iCloud music library. While this works fine on my iPad and iPhone accessing my imported music from the cloud, when I try to access this music from the music app on an Apple TV, it usually just sits at a blank white screen with a spinning gear cursor. Music I've purchased from iTunes typically loads fine, although some of that has issues of the same nature too. Does iClouse music library have known issues with Apple TV as those are the only devices that give me this issue. What I can say is, last year around this time, the apple TV(s) gave me the same issue with loading albums after clicking to open them.

Any feedback could help.

Thanks

It takes an Apple software engineer, a high-up one at that, to even know what is powering iCloud. So yeah, I speak for most people.
Again you don't speak for anyone other than yourself since iCloud is not required to activate a device. I'm not going to continue to argue with you. Acting as if someone cannot use an iPhone at all and that is it paralyzed without iCloud is dumb. That can be setup later.

Blah, Blah, Blah

Actually most of the folks in my family are very tech adept and work for tech companies and understand that issues can happen and that there are workarounds and for the ones who don't work in tech they also know because most folks can use common sense and realize that on Christmas Day if there are issues signing into iCloud or PSN or Xbox live etc that is because everyone on their mother has gotten a device and to try later.

Anyways keep pushing your agenda but it won't be with me because I no longer want to speak with you and am blocking you. Obviously you have an agenda and wanted to find a reason to complain about Apple and I am sick and tired of you people who do that. So have a happy new year or not I really do not care.

I didn't say that. I don't even know whether you need activation to use an Apple Watch, HomePod, etc, got no interest in those. Guess it's time to ignore if you're going to be unfriendly.

What’s a workaround for activating an Apple Watch or HomePod? And, if there is one, who the hell wants to spend Christmas trying “workarounds”?

Then why did you choose this thread of all things? 😳

They could take the "AP" in "CAP" if internet connections are a problem, but I don't think that's the problem here.
I don't really care about this particular outage. In general, iCloud seems flakier than other similar services. I still use it cause it's not that bad.

I thought it a bit odd, yesterday, that it was taking so long to "configure". Left it a few hours. Still configuring.
Fortunately I wasn't really relying on being able to use it straight away (and I already had three more, plus three full-size HomePods). Finished Christmas Day with the family. Went to bed.
Woke up this morning. Checked again. Still configuring! Started to get worried - but another busy day. Checked again in the afternoon - all done!

So it took about 24 hours, but without resetting it or touching it in any way (other than to check it) it eventually sorted itself out.

Had problems with a HomePod Mini yesterday during the day. Reset it and did a fresh setup about 6:30pm PST and it set up in less than a minute.

I contacted apple this afternoon after the issue with setting up my new M1 Macbook Pro where it was failing at the 'Enter passcode from iphone' section'. They said this is due to the traffic they are experiencing with new devices connecting to the server. They advised to try again later.

You can check the status by visiting... https://www.apple.com/support/systemstatus/
I am having exactly the same issue with my new M1 MBA. Only patience will help.

It seems it was solved an hour ago but it is still not working for me. I guess and hope it is just a timing issue and that I just need to wait a little bit more to activate iCloud on my brand new M1 MBA!!!
