Dang!!!
This is why my HomePod was stuck on configuring? I’ve been going crazy trying to get this sorted out!

They always have a massive influx of new device activations on Christmas Day.. You'd think they would have prepared for this by now.
Walkie talkie has never worked reliably or consistently. I don’t know anyone who uses it.I'm the OP from yesterday.
This is now resolved for me. I was able to activate and set up both kids' Apple Watch SE.
Walkie-talkie invite doesn't work (either direction), but I don't think that is related.
Not our concern how Apple runs their services. Not Apple's concern how AWS runs their services. You do realize that iCloud is hosted on AWS servers? So before you crucify Apple maybe Amazon is the one you should be upset at.
Well, if you want your thing to get verified, trying a dozen times does increase your chances. So people understand that server load is probably the issue, yet they try "a dozen times" anyway? 🙄
How ever did humans survive this long? 🤐
Stop saying "Our" because you don't speak for a collective group you only speak for yourself. Not our concern how Apple runs their services. Not Apple's concern how AWS runs their services.
Besides, this probably wasn't even caused by an AWS outage: In case Apple actually uses GCP mainly, that looks fine too:Google Cloud Status Dashboard

And maybe you should admit that you are looking for yet another reason to complain about Apple and that you are using this upset over "Not being able to sign into iCloud" as a front to just complain about Apple. I hope it goes down again to keep you hair triggered people in a holding pattern for a while. So maybe Apple should choose better its providers.
It takes an Apple software engineer, a high-up one at that, to even know what is powering iCloud. So yeah, I speak for most people.Stop saying "Our" because you don't speak for a collective group you only speak for yourself.

ok coolI don't like people like you and ill refrain from ever replying to a post of yours going forward.
This exactly describes my past experiences. I don't give tech as gifts anymore.Try giving your significant other a gift and seeing how they react when it becomes a frustrating and futile evening of ad-hoc tech support. Odds are you'll prefer going with the socks+perfume route again next year.
Again you don't speak for anyone other than yourself since iCloud is not required to activate a device. I'm not going to continue to argue with you. Acting as if someone cannot use an iPhone at all and that is it paralyzed without iCloud is dumb. That can be setup later. It takes an Apple software engineer, a high-up one at that, to even know what is powering iCloud. So yeah, I speak for most people.
Actually most of the folks in my family are very tech adept and work for tech companies and understand that issues can happen and that there are workarounds and for the ones who don't work in tech they also know because most folks can use common sense and realize that on Christmas Day if there are issues signing into iCloud or PSN or Xbox live etc that is because everyone on their mother has gotten a device and to try later. The holiday season has been the highest-revenue quarter for Apple for a long time now. That's a double-edged sword — it means lots of money for Apple (which they are clearly into, hence running holiday ads and all), but it also means some infrastructure peaks.
People are receiving their holiday gifts, and they do not work out of the box. At all. That's basically contrary to the stereotypical "it just works" Apple promise. If you're confused that a thread about this has some people "complaining", I don't know what to tell you. Try giving your significant other a gift and seeing how they react when it becomes a frustrating and futile evening of ad-hoc tech support. Odds are you'll prefer going with the socks+perfume route again next year.
To be clear, iCloud is only tangentially related to this.
ok cool
I didn't say that. I don't even know whether you need activation to use an Apple Watch, HomePod, etc, got no interest in those. Guess it's time to ignore if you're going to be unfriendly.Acting as if someone cannot use an iPhone at all and that is it paralyzed without iCloud is dumb. That can be setup later.
Blah, Blah, Blah
What’s a workaround for activating an Apple Watch or HomePod? And, if there is one, who the hell wants to spend Christmas trying “workarounds”?Actually most of the folks in my family are very tech adept and work for tech companies and understand that issues can happen and that there are workarounds
Then why did you choose this thread of all things? 😳Obviously you have an agenda and wanted to find a reason to complain about Apple and I am sick and tired of you people who do that.
They could take the "AP" in "CAP" if internet connections are a problem, but I don't think that's the problem here. You're assuming there's something more that Apple could be doing.
An internet connection is an "inter-network" connections. Essentially many networks interconnected together.
Delays and problems can be introduced at any point between A and B.
I am having exactly the same issue with my new M1 MBA. Only patience will help.I contacted apple this afternoon after the issue with setting up my new M1 Macbook Pro where it was failing at the 'Enter passcode from iphone' section'. They said this is due to the traffic they are experiencing with new devices connecting to the server. They advised to try again later.
