Apple today shared a new "Study With Me" Mac-focused video on its YouTube channel, providing a 1.5-hour guided study session for Apple device users.

Hosted by Storm Reid, Euphoria actress and University of Southern California student, the video uses the Pomodoro technique for three 25-minute study sessions with three five minute breaks.
90-minute Study With Me video featuring Storm Reid that's designed to keep you focused on studying and away from distractions. Storm uses the Pomodoro technique, with three 25-minute study sessions followed by fun 5-minute breaks that you can follow along with or use as inspiration for your own break time. She studies using the MacBook Air 15", chill lo-fi music to stay focused, and some of her favorite relaxation techniques.
The video has a series of lo-fi songs provided by Platoon Beats, which users can listen to while they work. The video is meant to highlight the 15-inch MacBook Air, which is the machine that Storm is using in the video. Apple promotes the M2 chip, multitasking capabilities, and 18-hour battery life.

Interesting. I don’t know who Pomodoro is but individual preferences will vary. I favored 50 minute then about 7 minute breaks but that was when studying for multiple hours. At that point need a strategy. The most important thing is hide the phone and do not respond to anything on it unless life threatening emergency. Studying with a computer that gets all same notifications and has access to all the time wasters in the internet seems hard but others have more ability to resist temptation. Here I am posting when I have a crazy insane amount of work to do….

I must be getting old cause the whole time im thinking, "Why?".
It's a smart advert with a potential of positively impacting someone somewhere. Who knows, maybe there's a person waiting for some new inspiration ideas on how to motivate themselves to learn a new topic, whatever it may be. I'll personally try it out as I completely forgot about the pomodoro technique and lo-fi music genre has its hidden gems too. So, yeah...

Apple wants us to watch a 1 hour and 32 minute video of her studying, working on her MBA, and taking breaks? 🤣

No, this is for when you want to study, but don’t want (or have enough motivation) to study alone. Another person studying alongside you keeps you on track.
But it's not another person. It's a video. I get the idea, but I don't think a video has nearly the same impact as studying with a live human being, whether that person is in the room (preferred) or on screen. I don't think people will have the same motivation/accountability when their "study buddy" is just a recording.

but someone isn't next to me studying. It's a video of someone studying. I think this says more about our collective loneliness where we 'study alone with friends' instead of actually going to a place with friends to study. For the record, I've never had a study buddy myself and I'm a functioning adult but it's a concept I'm familiar with from 90s TV shows/movies.

People still do it, it’s a whole genre: https://www.google.com/search?q=study+with+me+videos
The pandemic probably helped it. Apple is just jumping on the bandwagon.

Dilemma: how do I know she's really studying during each 25-minute session if I don't watch the video... just to make sure? 🤔

Incredible that people are so atomized and lonely that there is (apparently) demand for this genre of video.
I mean, not everyone is lonely. I'm a grown ass adult and my friends are busy with their jobs, kids, etc. a lot of the time when I need to work on my grad school stuff. I don't personally use these videos, but I see the appeal for someone in a position similar to mine. We're just seeing the typical, collective narrow-mindedness that is the comments on Macrumors lol. It's so predictable at this point it's hilarious.

I knew exactly what these comments would be without looking. Instead of seeking understanding, everyone just complains.

That was my point. I'm certain there are millions of people who study with friends over FaceTime because they don't have a car or there was a pandemic and you're in the same class and want to co-op homework or research. That does supplant meeting up in a common area and is an acceptable way to achieve cooperative learning and work on your social skills.

To watch what is basically a screen saver doesn't satisfy any of the benefits of studying with someone. It would honestly just contribute to my loneliness which I was incredibly lonely as a teenager. Only child, no friends, homeschooled for many years and the thought of watching a paid actor read on a computer would have made me feel more depressed and lonely. I had a hard enough time sitting alone in a public library hoping for any piece of human contact. My social interactions were bulletin boards / chat rooms. This medium would have not helped me study better. I would have been put into a deeper depression than I already was.

Psychologically, we need friends (IRL or a call / video chat), not paid actors pretending they know me while they eat a bag of nachos.

I don't have children but if my child had zero friends like I did and instead of talking to people online chose to watch "study with me" videos, I would be concerned about their mental well being and try to talk to them. My parents didn't pick up on my queues that I was incredibly depressed. This would be a pretty big red flag just like they should have been worried that I was in my room every waking hour with headphones and not a single person called me up on the phone to chat nor did I go to any out of school activities.

Like I said, young people can't seem to do anything these days without a screen nearby for emotional support, so I'm not surprised. I still think these young people would be a lot better off, and mentally healthier, if they planned a study date with a real live human being.
