I must be getting old cause the whole time im thinking, "Why?".

I felt the same way until I discovered Lo-fi Girl on YouTube and then everything changed. I'm older now (born in the 1970's) and distractions/focus with all the stuff around us is a thing. I recently took a community college class to learn Python programming - I only have life sciences and business degrees, so this is HARD for me. Videos like lo-fi girl really work when you need to think through stuff.

Yes there are other ways, but I have found this to be surprisingly effective. Don't knock it until you try it I guess!!

Here I am posting when I have a crazy insane amount of work to do….

I do find that I'm most active on the forums when my to-do list has stacked up. 🤪

I don't get it. 90 minutes of watching someone stare at a laptop computer screen? thats interesting?

It's not meant to be interesting. It's meant to help you shut out other distractions so that you can focus on work or learning. Deep work is something that is harder and harder with devices around us all the time.

Like I said, young people can't seem to do anything these days without a screen nearby for emotional support, so I'm not surprised. I still think these young people would be a lot better off, and mentally healthier, if they planned a study date with a real live human being.
I somewhat agree, but it’s not always feasible, and some also prefer not having to have social interaction (e.g. due to social anxiety). It’s also not just young people.

100%. Plus there's no accountability when it's a video. That's one of the main reasons to have a study buddy. Accountability.

Now, if the actor was AI generated and fully familiar with the entire content not just of the class syllabus but also of the lecture & assignment and I could interact with it, even though that would be mentally/socially unhealthy, at least there would be a sense or learning and collaboration for me as a student. I think kids in 10 years will have AI study buddies which are effective in helping them learn and be better in school.

Still doesn't solve the social issues.

Yes let me hand write my 40-page thesis companion paper. Or would a typewriter be acceptably old technology?
Lol. You know exactly what I mean. Today's youth are slaves to social media, insecure, mentally unhealthy, socially stunted, etc. because of their screen addictions. Let's be real. 99% of their time in front of the screen is spent NOT word processing.

Fair points and I say do whatever is best for you...but that doesn't change the fact that there's no accountability when you have a video playing. As for social interaction, what can I say, mental illness seems to be skyrocketing everywhere. Pretty soon everyone is going to be so mentally ill and scared of other humans that we'll all be locked in our homes...wearing Vision Pro. 🤪

goddamn, the cgi on the MacBook is so bad. if at least they could've synched her fake moves and what's displayed on the screen. 😂

I think you're probably right, but even then, there's no accountability. No matter how sophisticated the tech gets, the end result is the same. Real accountability requires a real human.

Still doesn't solve the social issues.
I don't believe they are solvable. Social media and screen addiction has permanently altered humanity. The trend line is clear. I don't think anything is going to fix this short of people choosing not to subject themselves to all the brainwashing and junk food for the mind that permeates social media.

I do appreciate Apple doing this. I accept it is an ad, but it is based on sound science and promotes a technique that works within the limitations of our working memory. If students use this along with the SQ3R study method, they will see improvements in memory and recall.

I have students who use this technique and find it helpful. For some students who aren't able to arrange study with others, this provides that motivation virtually.

Because, it seems, young people today can't do anything without a screen.
That’s not going to change. I have thee kids, every single one of their school books are digital. All their homework is digital. I teach three college courses, all digital. My wife teaches two college courses, all digital. For better or worse, screens are here to stay.

It's probably just me but I simply cannot study with anyone else, at all, full stop. Just the presence of someone else in the room while studying is too much of a distraction to me. I have to study alone with music FAR more "chill" than so-called lo-fi chill. Even the music in this video is too much of a distraction to me. While I see the helpfulness, benefit, and point of the video/ad, it's definitely not for me and thinking back, when I was in school full-time I never studied with anyone. I honestly wish I understand how people study with others around. I guess it's like working in a loud Starbucks or other coffee shop, which I wished worked for me. It'll be interesting to see the comments about how people like or hate it. The comments from people who don't understand the point of the video is really telling and while surprising, it's deeply disappointing.

I don’t know why I keep thinkimg that Apple users might be a *little* more open minded and reasonable about things, especially when it involves tech, but the comments on this site always smack me in the head with reality. It’s my Apple bias, I guess LOL.

In all seriousness, I also thought these “study with me” videos on YouTube were odd, but going back to college it’s shown me that these are oddly helpful.

There are times where I’m just exhausted from work, or just not in the mood to study, and these videos (and the pomodoro method) have been a big help.

Are these videos weird? Going by these comments, I suppose? Does it help? Yeah, it weirdly does.

It’s just a different learning method, like flash cards, study groups (which personally have not always been helpful since people end up getting distracted), or listening to music, etc.

Just like EVERY GENERATION, something new comes in and the older generations complain about it. I’m sure that’ll continue to be the case in future generations.

OK why are none of these comments about the enormous freaking teddy bear in the background? That's the real story here.

Interesting. Surprised to find out that there's a whole genre of videos like this, and that I didn't hear about it during the pandemic.

I don't think this kind of video would work for me, but I don't immediately dismiss that it might be helpful for some people. When I was in college, I found it much more helpful to study with someone else in the class, but the further I got into my classes, the harder that got to be able to do. So sometimes I would just go to the library with a friend for a couple hours. I found that actually getting away from my dorm and going somewhere else to study helped a lot, despite the fact that I still had my MacBook with me that still had all the same easy access to FaceBook and Twitter on it.

I mean, not everyone is lonely. I'm a grown ass adult and my friends are busy with their jobs, kids, etc. a lot of the time when I need to work on my grad school stuff. I don't personally use these videos, but I see the appeal for someone in a position similar to mine. We're just seeing the typical, collective narrow-mindedness that is the comments on Macrumors lol. It's so predictable at this point it's hilarious.

I knew exactly what these comments would be without looking. Instead of seeking understanding, everyone just complains.
"Think the way I think or else you are narrow-minded."

Okie dokie chief.
