Goodbye 2018 Intel MacBook Pro… hello M4! Definitely glad I held out.

Quick question for any Python developers out there: I currently work in Python (mainly with Django) and am planning to dive into the world of LLMs. For those of you in similar fields, would you spring for the M4 Max or stick with the Pro? I’m leaning toward the Pro but would love to hear from others who work with large datasets and resource-intensive applications. Appreciate any thoughts!

for LLMs you should go 128gb and that means max only

I couldnt believe it when I heard it! I wonder if part of the Windows version already owned i.e bought through Steam or need to buy again.
If it comes out on Steam odds are, you don’t need to buy again but Apple might have negotiated an exclusive for the App Store.

Did they really need to go with Ubisoft for the hero shot? AC Shadows is already a pretty universally panned game and Ubisoft is not really helping the situation with their comments.

M4 Max MBP has the same 16/40 core count as the M3 Max MBP for a small increase in performance. I guess the worthwhile updates are TB5 and nanodisplay. Anything else?

Considering how well it runs on my M1 Pro chip through CrossOver, I am hyped to see how it does on M4 Max when it is running native code. Gaming on Mac really needed this as a show piece for what M series APUs can do. Most people don't realize how far ahead of the game they are in GPU performance compared to their x86 APU counterparts. Take for example the base fanless iPad M4 that ships with a 20w charger. It matches the highest end AMD full fat desktop APU, the 8700G that gulps watts and needs a softballs sized cooler, while being as loud as a jet engine. If M4 Max GPU is anything close to what Apple is claiming it will be 4x more powerful than the 8700G's graphics and still in a quiet, all day un-corded, thin and portable machine.
I just tend to use Geforce Now where possible

i love all those ray traced games sinc I got m2 max, like I bought them all and played them all and what was the best, it cost me 0$. Magic. Adventure games, strategy games, driving simulators, RPGs, you name it, liek all are amazing and with RT no slowdown at all, no battery drain, my laptop stays barely warm. And I can even work while playing bc they all run only in the background I think, at least I don't know how to download them and run. But still it is enough for me to make fun out of my friends owning some AI PC Chips, like how can they even play on such slow computers. I much rather like m4 max with RT games coming somewhere in near decade than playing right now on some ****** AI PC Chips which are up to 3x times slower.
GO GO APPLE!
Ok, but let’s just remember Apple is using an integrated GPU for PC in the comparison, a laptop RTX 4090 is about 3 x faster than the M4 in gaming.

Well my insidious M4 Ultra delay theory is coming true.

I mean they're showing LM Studio in their video.

Reason they delayed M4 Ultra for another 6 months is because right now no other company other than Apple gives you this much VRAM to run large LLMs. Yes inference is slower than strapping 3 x 4090s together but you get the ability to run large LLMs and that's what matters. The M4 Ultra with 256GB of RAM would allow you to run quantized 300B parameter models. Apple is going to sell every last M2 Ultra SKU before they release M4 Ultra. Or they'll use the M4 Ultra for their own in house servers before passing it off to OpenAI.

And did my eyes deceive me? Did they really demo Cyberpunk in their video? Since when does it run on a Mac natively without Crossover or the porting toolkit?

These MacBook's are so tempting to buy. Coming from a M1 MacBook Pro 12 CPU, 16 GPU, 16GB ram and 1TB storage. Really looking forward in upgrading. Just wonder, is it compatible with the grey square shaped rounded edge piece of magic, the apple cleaning cloth ? Can I clean a nano texture glass with it ?

That final video at the end, so hilarious. It says don’t try this at home. With that amount of weights, no one earth can even try.

Very tempting to upgrade from my M2 Pro. If only I would use the M2 Pro capabilities today…. 😇🤣

Nice how you packaged your racism. Maybe don't hang out on X-Twitter as much?
How was that racism? It is no secrete that everyone is coming up with bizarre names for their kids the last 10 years or so. It goes across al races. Common ethnic/regional names are normal names too.

The dude's comment is oddly placed on MacRumors about a MBPs event... but still no need to try to inject race into it too, taking things further off track.

Where do you see that it's small? M4 shows a significant performance boost per core from M3. Definitely comparable if not better than in previous generations.

Also, there is a reason they compare it with M1 Max so many times in their promo video. Those are the people they are targeting. Not M3 Max users. If you're one, you are not the target audience.

I like the 1000 nit SDR brightness (compared to previous 500 nits), definitely will come in handy when working outdoors.

New AI engine is also a big welcome, IMO. About 2x performance of M3 Max.

546GB/s of memory bandwidth vs 400GB/s in M3 Max is a 36.5% increase. For the first time since M1 Max.

Only WiFi 6e? They put a Wifi 7 chipset in their iphone, which doesn't need to throw big files around at all but stick with the old outdated standard on the "pro" laptop. Apple is so lazy with these cash grab spec bumps - I doubt it would have taken much to upgrade the logic board and now we're stuck with an old standard until 2026 until tandem OLED is released on m5 pros.
