Apple this morning published a new iPhone 8 ad to its YouTube channel, highlighting eight things to love about the new device.

In the 46 second spot, set to the song "Namesake" by Tunde Olaniran, Apple lists the following features as reasons to get an iPhone 8:

- Most durable glass in a smartphone
- Portrait Lighting (the new Portrait Mode feature)
- Wireless charging with Qi inductive chargers
- The A11, the smartest most powerful chip in a smartphone
- The world's most popular camera
- Water resistant
- New Retina HD display with True Tone
- Augmented Reality support

Apple's new iPhone 8 ad comes just as the device is launching. The iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus went on sale today, with pre-order customers receiving deliveries and retail stores beginning to offer the devices for purchase.

This is Apple's third iPhone 8 video, following two that were shown on stage during the September 15 keynote event. One of those videos described the iPhone 8 in 8 seconds, and the other was a 40 second unveiling video.

Water resistant. I'm laughing internally. When you are seeking help from Apple about your water-damaged iphone.....

Other than that...i give major props for making very good durable iphone based on joe's video.

They missed the big one, you can actually get the iphone 8 whereas the X will be sometime in 2q 2018 (realistically)

just let inventory sit so the price will drop.

they should have just release the X only. created a problem for themselves. Steve Job would not have done it this way. LOL

Yup should have just had two different sized X's and kept the 7 in the line up pushed out the iphone part of the keynote closer to release and called it a day.

Why do they call it a "'New' Retina HD Display" if its the same display just with true tone added?

Apple likes to sell it's very minor and usually very dated "new features" vs competitors (lower ppi and oled) as as something mind blowing when they are not. Well at least since Cook and crew have taken over.

As much as the X looks cool and futuristic and all, this is a pretty great phone - amazing internals and you aren’t going to be a beta tester of a brand new design and screen type. If I had to change my work phone now, it would probably be an iPhone 8 Plus

If the x is sold out I'll have to get this one.

Kinda sad but yeah I'm getting itchy to replace my 5S. Though I can probably downgrade it back to ios 10 and squeeze another 6 months out of it or go back to using my nexus 6p for awhile. Option 2 probably makes most sense but it's so darn big.

I especially love how it took Apple MORE than 5 years to adopt Qi standard. Just on the forefront of innovation on this one.

It also took them 5 years to adopt OLED. I suppose having the "courage" to jack up the price $350 for such ancient tech is some kind of business innovation even if it's not technical innovation.

The iPhone 8 is the culmination of the fact that there‘s no real progress in smartphones any more, phones became a convenience and don‘t excite people these days while at the same time the iPhone has reached a price level that we’re are not willing to pay anymore for a quite boring decice.

I took my Samsung S7 in the pool and recorded video underwater. I would be chicken to do with any iPhone even within the recommended depths.

Why? Didn't iPhone win some popular head to head vs Samsung for water resistance? Also, Sammy definitely had issues with early models of Active and I believe one other model that was supposed to be water resistant so that didn't necessarily inspire confidence in their build quality.

One thing I immediately noticed is that it’s still laggy. A brand new iPhone 8 Plus with the fastest chip ever in a mobile device... still lags. My 6S feels snappier and smoother. Really disappointed. I don’t care about Geekbench scores if the software itself makes the phone feel slow. Not only that but I’ve noticed UI glitches that are littered everywhere. iOS 11 is a really poor show from Apple and the fact that they thought it was acceptable to ship it in its current state on their supposed latest and greatest shows how far they’ve fallen. Do they and will they still sell in droves? Yes, but it’s not about that. I don’t care about that stuff as a consumer and it isn’t a sign of quality. It was true with Apple in the past because the quality of the software combined with the hardware backed it up, but not today. The Apple brand itself sells these days because of the real quality reputation that they built up from the past.

Thinking of returning this one. It honestly doesn’t feel worth it at all and I think it’s the first time I’ve felt that about a new iPhone. It’s just a real shame and saddens me as I never even questioned their software design issues and performance issues in the past because there wasn’t any, or very little to complain about at least. Now there’s people heavily complaining about how behind Apple are, how much they’ve fallen in terms of quality, heck, even non tech people say it’s not the same since Steve died. And it really isn’t anymore.

The issue with the 8 is that it's Apple positions it as a mid-tier phone, but charges a flagship price (i.e. the price of the Samsung Galaxy 8). Those who want a flagship will buy the X. But if you're going for the budget option, then why not the 7? Most crucially, the 7 has the same amount of memory, so will last as many iOS upgrades as the 8 (lack of memory and dead batteries being the main reasons for older iPhones being crippled).

The 8 is here because they didn't want to put all their eggs in one basket. The X with it's missing home button and Face ID is a global experiment. If people don't really like the design they can get an 8.

It's too risky doing radical changes to a device that millions of people rely on without having a Plan B: The iPhone 8 is Plan B.
