It's really disappointing. The lack of detail and the unavailability of night mode...

If you've ever used one of those attachment wide angle lenses, you'll appreciate what you are getting with the ultra wide angle lens on the Apple phone. I've tried 5 different wide angle attachements -- they ALL blur the edges to some degree, some horribly so. So what I'm seeing with the Apple ultra wide angle, it's good for what it is.
Let's face it, you just aren't going to get DSLR quality from such a small lens, especially with such a wide angle.
We all know by now that "Pro" is just a marketing term and nothing else.
And it looks like it worked out again perfectly fine for Apple
Apple is King in cool marketing terms with their devices and it's capabilities.
But again, nothing really Pro with these iPhone 11 Pro (Max).
I either have a defective unit, or the wide angle really sucks. I was so excited to use it until I saw how poor the quality was. I’m not sure how these Youtubers are getting clean shots. I can be in the same environment and the picture looks heavily blurred. It’s really quite horrible. I very disappointed.

I beg to differ. I had one for my X and it took some amazing shots. Much better then my 11 Pro Max. I to am severely disappointed.

You shouldn't let labels manufacturers choose let you get so worked up. Its just a label.

You're going to return your phone, right? You have 14 days.
Care to share what lens attachment you had?
Probably not unfortunately. I only upgraded because my iPhone X got smashed so I had to get a new phone. If the XS was still up for grabs I would probably return this one and get one of those. I’m seeing similar comments like mine on other forums and on reddit so thankfully, I’m not alone.
I was only excited to get this phone because of the new cameras and so far, it’s been a huge let down. I’ve even noticed that the preview before the picture sometimes looks much different than after the photo is taken.
Not to mention the “extra” space that Apple has filled with a larger view is lagged behind the main camera. Hopefully this is something that can be fixed in a software update.
I understand that we have slowed down in technology advancement in the mobile phone world but I’m starting to lean towards wishing we could get a new CEO. I like Cook a lot, but under his leadership I have been disappointed multiple times now. This is apparent with several top executives leaving the company in the last few months.

Since you're unhappy with your purchase, I'd return it.
I don't mean to be rude with the comment, but this is not a good photo composition to try and judge a wide angle camera/lens. You need something interesting in the foreground near you or its just going to look like a boring flat photo. I suspect 90% of people complaining about the wide angle lens don't know how to compose an interesting photo with one.

A short while after I picked up my 8+ I did two of the iPhone photography short lessons they have in store (Birmingham, UK). I learnt an awful lot (coming from a 6), and suspect when I jump up to a new one I’ll do the same again. Is there a good tutorial somewhere on how to best take advantage of all these new cameras and features?
I get your logic, I’m definitely not questioning your intentions or motives for wanting to use the wide angle. I’m simply explaining that this is a common challenge people realize with wide angle lenses, especially if you aren’t using a DSLR with a monstrous sensor and a lot more pixels. If you are simply trying to capture a large scene and most everything is far away and there is nothing interesting in the center or foreground, it’s going to look dull and lack pop. In your photo the only thing close to you is water and a little bit of rocks in the far edge. I’d wager a challenge to go try and capture some photos with subjects much closer to you than you might think to do, and then judge the camera/lens.I was simply trying to get a shot of the bridge like I have many times with the normal lens on my phone. Because of the angle of the bridge and vantage points I decided to use the wide angle lens to fit most of it into the photo. There isn’t anything wrong with trying to capture as much scene in a landscape photo. I’m only saying I wish it was a bit sharper because this is the only reason I need a wide angle lens. It’s to shoot these types of photos. I don’t need anything close to me in the photo because that isn’t what I want a photo of.

I’m not asking for DSLR quality. Some how apply will magically make the ultra wide angle lens twice as sharp next year. Why couldn’t they have done it this year?
Moral of story, you think cell phone cameras are crap : ) Those crap cameras however are now being used by many professionals and are perfectly capable of producing quality prints, and also sell images in the stock world. But crap away!!No need to argue about cellphone camera cause they are all crap. They are all made to look good on the small screens so when I hear people complaining about looking at them at full res I really don't know what to say. Who in their right mind would ever use a phone photo at original size for anything? If you have a need for something like that you better go and buy at least RX100 for idiot proof shooting if you don't want to mess around with dslr.
Night modes are especially disastrous and while it's convenient to shoot at camp fire from time to time viewing of that image is only limited once again on a tiny screen or at 1024x786 downscale. As soon as you open that photo on PC monitor or TV all kinds of artifacts, noise and smudging will show up big time. Night mode is reality check how computational photography is not there yet and it will not be there yet for at least another ten years.
My biggest gripe with iPhone video is lack of real HDR HLG video. To me that is the feature that makes the most difference in mobile imaging (together with AF burst for moving subjects that minimizes motion blur). When you shoot HLG video and put it on HDR TV the difference is wow compared to SDR video. Of course you have to endure through dropped frames in the video cause once again cellphone cameras are still crap.
Anyone else notice how horrible the wide-angle camera is on the iPhone 11 Pro Max? Mine looks like it's taking a picture from a 2010 Android phone.
giving joe blow a $100,000 cinema camera is not going to magically make him a cinematographer, just like giving a regular guy a sports car is not going to make him a great driver all of a sudden. the skills lie in the person, the equipment is not going to magically add skills.
And they are also using 10s of thousands of dollars in other equipmentMoral of story, you think cell phone cameras are crap : ) Those crap cameras however are now being used by many professionals and are perfectly capable of producing quality prints, and also sell images in the stock world. But crap away!!

Underrated comment. The fact that we have an iPhone upgrade program as well as financed cell phones now says everything.Yes, a decent smartphone is good and capturing some memories are good too. But sometimes, we need to save the money and live in the moment. Apple shareholders have enough. I say this out of pure concern because of the extreme level of consumerism I sometimes see and the revolving debt some of us put ourselves in just to keep up with the Joneses.
Sure, I’m gonna upgrade, maybe about 2022 or 2023, but thats a savings of nearly $7,000 in yearly upgrades. It can be done, because see people everyday on the streets, buses, at karaoke with that old iPhone 6 or sometimes an iPhone 5 series devices. Their world did not come crashing down.
Apple basically keeps selling the same phone three years in a row and so many fall for it. Yes, what you see on stage is amazing, but most of us won’t be doing that. Sure, we are gonna take our selfies and group photos, but any phone can do this, even the Android phone the guy used at the Apple New York store re-opening seemed sufficient enough. What extreme measure are really trying to capture? We are sharing it on IG and Facebook where it still gets downgraded. What’s the point of having a library of 200,000 photos when you won’t have the time to even look through 25?

I guess i’m just not as excited as I use to be. I still haven’t upgraded my iPhone 6s and X to iOS 13, neither my 2017 iPad. It’s amazing how contented with the things the way they are, they just work. My 2015 MBP is still on Sierra and I want be upgrading it either to Catalina.Couldn't agree more. Now that we know Apple is on a 3-year upgrade cycle with iPhone, I'm a big believer in buying the most refined year-3 device every three years. In fact, as tempted as I am by the 11 Pro (the 3rd iteration of the X), I'm reluctant to give up Touch ID, Home Button, Qualcomm modem, etc of my 8 Plus.
Same thing applies to the MacBook Pro. They're on a 4-year upgrade cycle, and the 2019 version is twice as powerful as the 2016 version, and without the mechanical issues of the 2017 and 2018 versions... knock on wood.
Time for consumers to start treating tech like the commodity that it is, and get outside more. #SPF50
Sidebar: Apple has been going through some growing pains for roughly the past 5 years, and there's a whole generation of lemon devices across the entire hardware lineup. The previous generations of all of those devices (Mac Pro 2012, MacBook Pro 2014, iPhone 8) used NVIDIA GPU's, Qualcomm modems, and weren't as gimmicky. Then came the Trash Can, Touch Bar, Intel modems, recycled iPad "updates" to clear inventory... Notwithstanding price, they seem to be pivoting again: Watch S4/5, iPad0S, MacPro 2019, (imminent) MacBook Pro 2020, iPhone 12... signal a promising return to form amidst the streaming wars, personnel changes, move into the spaceship... fingers crossed.
