I must be odd because I only care about original content. All the old stuff I either own, have seen already (and once was enough) or didn‘t care about then, don‘t care about now. In this regard, Apple TV+ is really quite good, actually, and probably even the best bang for the buck.
I agree. I’ve watched several shows on TV+ and have enjoyed them all. Apple is showing there is still some “think differently” remaining. The market is already over-saturated with mainstream entertainment.

Been hooked on this song ever since she performed it at the AppleTV+ event a few months ago. Wish it was the full version, though.

Apple TV+ is a barf-fest! Garbage in and garbage out, just like Apple's iOS 13 and iPadOS 13. And their recent update to the Apple TV 4K firmware has introduced issues like buffering which I rarely encountered beforehand. They would do better to just not update FW rather than bleep it up all the time!

I am not saying it won’t succeed and I am actually hoping it would eventually succeed. My point is based on competing subscription services and their offerings. “Why subscribe to one more TV service, that too a politically correct one. I already have Disney for my family TV requirements”. is what most people will think. A couple of break out hits is a minimum requirement for people to consider subscribing.

AppleTV+ isn’t The Family Channel. There’s violence and swearing and scary stuff I’d never play around the family.

I’m not sure that I get what you mean by politically correct. If you want racism, misogyny, homophobia, transphobia and other discrimination, I’m glad to confirm that this isn’t the service for you.

It’s not that they chose to add what appears to you as political correctness. It’s the absence of normalized discrimination that somehow appears strange to you.

BOOM! I’ve never heard it so well put. Long time lurker, I had to sign up just to give you props!

That's an extremely high bar. Shows that create the kind of buzz that GoT did come along maybe once or twice in a decade.

It’s been a pretty hit filled decade. We’re absolutely in a new golden age of TV. Game Of Thrones isn’t a once or twice a decade hit. Breaking Bad, Stranger Things, Black Mirror, The Mandalorian, Russian Doll, This Is Us... and many more have all gotten huge buzz.

You could argue that AppleTV+ already has one of those breakthrough hits. Mythic Quest is being buzzed about outside the Apple walled garden. I frequently see it on Torrent sites.

Give it some time and Apple will have a must see hit.

I agree that it is a golden age and there are lots of high quality shows out there (most recently, I was mesmerized by HBO's Succession). But with the exception of Breaking Bad and maybe Lost, I don't think any other shows in this century so far have been a pop culture phenomenon like GoT.

Stranger Things? The Mandalorean? I guess maybe they’re not up there with Breaking Bad and GoT in cultural ubiquity but everyone I know seems to have watched them. Ironically, I’ve never gotten past the first 2 episodes of GoT. I keep saying I’ll watch it but there’s so much else I want to get to.

Not really, there’s been a consistent flow of overlapping must watch series since Lost paved way for GOT etc. There is still quality in abundance out there, it’s just not on ATV+.

Some shows in ATV are ok but it’s mostly niche shows.
they should do something big with lots of characters, a grand story are and big cinematic universe. They have the budget.

All the shows I have seen on ATV are not very ambitious. Some are fun to watch but nothing special.
I wouldn't call The Morning Show a niche show, I don' think For All Mankind, Amazing Stories or even Servant are niche shows. See, Dickinson sure kind'a niche. There is a good foundation being built but even Apple is realizing that they can't do it on their own.

Guess we'll disagree about the ambitious part...

There it is. "Politically correct." I was wondering when that one would pop up.

Apple TV+ isn't "politically correct". People are still digging up a long-clarified note that the service isn't interested in sex and violence for the sake of sex and violence.
Can't speak for the quoted dude, but you can't deny Apple has that reputation and when you announce shows like Little America, The Banker, Visible and have Oprah as one of the star contributors you are not exactly shying away from that reputation

Man either don't bother or only watch the first 4 seasons. When the showrunners were left to their own devices to interpret the rest of the story the storytelling took a dramatic nosedive. I noped out halfway through season 6 and never regretted that decision.

I don’t think “political correct” is quite right, but I know what the prior poster was getting at. The word I saw used in an article about Apple TV+ was “aspirational,” and I think it’s a good one. I’d call it a very self-conscious high-mindedness.

If you go by the shows that have ended up the most popular in recent years (GoT, Mad Men, Sopranos, Breaking Bad, etc), that’s not what most viewers want. Those shows are certainly well-made and often thought-provoking, but they’re also first and foremost made to entertain.

I don’t get the sense that “is it entertaining” is the first (and probably not the second or third) question that gets asked when a show is getting evaluated at Apple.

Sounds like you're talking about See. It's already a large world and it's expanding.

While I kind of soured on the show, it's probably just not for me. I wasn't able to get into Game of Thrones either. See has the mythology and large cast of characters and storylines that has the potential to grow into its own world with dedicated fans.

And there's no way you can come from watching See or For All Mankind and saying that Apple isn't being ambitious. Both of those have a high production value and storylines that have multiple season potential for years to come.

All their shows have excellent production value. Amazing Stories looked good, acting and writing were uneven and the selected stories not so great, but you can't deny that it didn't look good. The Morning Show was probably the best of the bunch by those metrics and they did an awesome job with Dickenson and Servant. It just seems they are casting a wide net and offering a bunch of different genres and styles, which is good, what may not appeal to me will gain an audience for others. I just don't think they want to dump low-quality crap just to pad out the line-up... you know as Netflix and Prime video does.

Definitely not for me. Oh well. I look forward to Greyhound which releases the same day, plus Greatness Code.

Personal opinion time...

To me, AppleTV+ came out gangbusters. All their initial shows I really enjoyed at varying levels. Since then it has started to fizzle. I was so looking forward to Amazing Stories but for next season they should rename it Boring Stories, The Loop over on Amazon was closer to what I was hoping Amazing Stories to be. Since then all their other shows have just not interested me at all. When they wander off into cultural lecturing I'm even less interested...

I do not expect every show to cater to my tastes, that'd be silly, but for so many whiffs since Servant, I'm beginning to wonder if there are any new shows that are going to appeal to me. I'm cautiously optimistic about the upcoming Foundation series, I was excited but after what I saw them do to Amazing Stories it got downgraded so I don't suffer another disappointment.
The good thing is that all those original shows you enjoyed are coming back for at least 2 seasons, if not many more. Also, have you tried either Defending Jacob or Home Before Dark? Those are both as good as the launch titles, though if you don't go for Thriller/Detective genre, I get that.

Yes. That puts it perfectly. I find TV+ a pure fulfillment of "Think Different."

But Little America and The Banker were fabulous. Little America was incredible for how it told the story of immigrants without every advocating for illegal immigration. I think every American can agree that legal immigration has provided America with some of its best and brightest, and America was built on immigration away from oppressive England. The way they told that without every saying that illegal immigration was positive was excellent. (Even in Episode 2, Jaguar, with the illegal immigrant kid, they make a point that the girl grows up and works to get proper citizenship, and never glorify the illegal entry part of it).

They need to make something like Sherlock or GOT. Something that creates lot of buzz. Else Apple TV+ is just not going to work. With Netflix on one side and Disney plus on the other. The sad challenge that Apple TV+ faces is that good shows are not enough. Very good shows are still not enough. They need mega hit shows with crazy fan followings. And one is not enough. They need a 2 of these before people start taking this seriously.
They tried that with their “Everyone in the future is BLIND!” series, and whiffed hard. Heck I don’t even remember what it was called now... Sight maybe? I couldn’t even make it through the first episode.

Just watched the trailer. To sum up, a “little” reboot of Coyote Ugly, but sensitive.
Little Voice, Big Yawn.

And what it is with JJ Abrams and stories about curly haired women in the big city?

Except, See was an excellent show. I’m sorry you couldn’t suspend disbelief for more than 10 minutes, but for a sci-fi fan like myself, I have suspended disbelief for far more outlandish concepts.

I liked Little America, I didn't think it was fantastic though. ;)

I haven't seen The Banker, just not a subject I am all that interested in but who knows I might check it out someday.

The Morning Show successfully tackled the Weinstein/MeToo thing very even-handedly... which honestly I can say I expected much more "white man bad" and got a look at all sides told in a very show don't tell way with almost zero preaching.

The quality of the shows, in my mind at least, isn't the issue, it is the optics of what Apple is to the consumer. To a segment, Apple is that left-leaning/liberal/sjw company... which is hogwash but the image is out there and Apple doesn't do much to discourage it, they even lean into it and the shows do reflect that.

Saw the first episode of Home After Dark, don't know if I'll continue it as it seems to be geared towards a younger audience and I am "ahem" on the mature side. It seemed OK and one episode probably didn't give it a fair shake but let's just say if space opens up in my entertainment alloted time I might continue it.

Will get around to Defending Jacob but not all that motivated as detective stores just aren't my thing.

Yeah, Home Before Dark becomes a surprisingly adult-friendly show once it gets rolling. The actual mystery/story going on in the town is quite dark and quite a few things happen that, while family friendly, will make more sense to adults.

The showrunners made the show targeting the whole family, something everyone can watch together and enjoy. This per an interview a while ago.

I fully agree with you on The Morning Show. What a breath of fresh air from the heavy handed and unsubtle way a lot of network shows approach this.

Also, I didn't think The Banker would be for me either, but if you like buddy/heist movies you will love this, as I did. It had an Ocean's Eleven flavor for me. Also an underdog story, ala Rocky, etc. The trailer doesn't quite give you a sense of what the movie is about, which IMO is a good thing (I hate trailers that spoil the entire plot).

Same, I like Sam L Jackson but somehow this wasn't appealing to me. Good thing I didn't watch the trailer. I'll watch The Banker tonight.

I am extremely picky when it comes to TV shows and I watch very little, opposed to my wife who watches almost every night some Netflix stuff.

There hasn't been anything on Apple TV+ yet that interested me, but seeing the trailer of "Defending Jacob" got my attention and seemed like something I could watch with my wife.

So we started watching, and I was blown away by the quality of it. I got sucked right into it. I know something is good when my mind isn't wandering while watching it.
