Depressing video. The women in it seems to be living a sad and lonely life - is she in some sort of prison? She doesn't seem to see anyone all day and only has her computer to talk to.

Maybe they could have an ad showing how Siri / HomeKit can help in a busy family. If indeed that is the case.
Apparently it was shot as "Her" trailer until they realized it looked too happy and that Joaquin Phoenix is actually male.

You don't really need the extra layers of security Apple insists on. It's not nearly as expensive that way. And the next time you read an article about how much worse the next IoT hack is than anything prior to it, remember that your advice helped fuel that. Setting it up is like cocking a pistol. That's not a sufficient skill set for the task.

That's why I said, if you read my post, if you have the knowledge.

You think Apple's "secure" systems don't have vulnerabilities? Every iOS jailbreak is a vulnerability for god's sake.

Apple aren't making it more secure. They're making it more expensive, and slower. And of course, more profitable for them.

Plus, if these Homekit approved devices have been through so much testing? Why don't they just damn well work!

So the UX of the Home App is a background image and rounded squares on the foreground? I expected more to be honest. I don't know the solution, but I wanted to say "wow, se how cool is to control my house!"

Whats funny is "no one cares" at all..you might "demo' it and get a smile they talk behind your back .

Not that hard to flip a switch is it? Or lock a door?
If I see any "home automation" beyond a garage door opener, my next thought is "how much money did they waste on that" then shake my head/snicker then tell people, same for 4k tvs and the like.

So I get the appeal of home automation; if I had extra money burning a hole in my pocket and if the technology was a little more mature, I'd probably install some in my house.

I've never used Home Kit, but it seems that the pre-programmed stuff would be annoyingly inflexible. Like you set up in advance what should happen when you tap a particular button, but then what happens when you deviate from that use case? Then you have to manually (or Sirily) adjust things again. Not the end of the world, but I could see it getting annoying to initiate a preset and then have to hit the phone a second time to change things. It seems like in the future it could be smart enough to realize when you deviate from a preset and then adjust the preset for you automatically.

Has anyone here actually used this and does it fit your lifestyle and sudden whims pretty well? Or do you find yourself just using a manual lightswitch when you want to walk to the kitchen at night, instead of asking Siri to light your way (or whatever)?

biggest issue for me with siri and homekit is i say goodnight and about half the time it says 'some of your devices aren't responding' and i say it again and it works. why don't they just do a few retries silently in this case? it is clear all homekit devices may take a command or two first to wake up from a sleep they must be in. if it knows it didn't work why not just send the request again 100ms later. all embedded systems i have ever worked on always have retries when communicating with external devices.

otherwise every now and then one of my scheduled device changes just doesn't happen (probably for the same reason) like the lights are off when i get home. retries would likely fix this too.

finally the elephant in the room is why my laptop or desktop mac cannot act as the homekit controller instead of my ipad or apple tv? i don't have a tv and my ipad perhaps battery is low or i forget to plug it in sometimes. my laptop or desktop mac is always powered. i would also like a setting to allow my laptop to control homekit same as my ipad with the ability to enable always listening. 9 out of 10 times i want to control something by voice i don't have my ipad connected to power, but again my laptop is always near.

This is just fantastic, a wiew if our future.

Yet, unexplicably, MR commenters only feel compelled to bash Siri (hint: Siri works very well now).

Except that whenever it gets one part of the sentence wrong, you will never be able to let it rectify, even if you are extremely patient, try it dozens of times, in different methods and different phrases.

In short, it's not a bit similar to an assistant, since it has ZERO sense of *conversation* -- multiple chats back and forth on the same topic to finally shape it correct. Siri at present is just an okay-level voice command system, something SLIGHTLY improved from what 1980's mac had.

And what does this have to do with HomeKit and the article?

Siri will undoubtedly understand the only interaction portrayed in the video. Siri isn't perfect, just like Alexa and Assistant, but the Siri bashing in this topic just does not make sense. That was my point.

Do. you habe a 2.4 GHz wifi at Home? Because it's interfering the ZigBee accessories. If yes, gehen Check whichh channels your wifi and zigbee has. The gap between the channels should be as far as possible.

I had this too, nur setting wifi to channel 1 and zigbee to 25 made it far more reliable.
All of my accessories route through my Apple TV. Don't even know what a zigbee is. Some kind of bridge for non-homekit?

You might try setting your Apple TV to never sleep. It could be just me, but it seems a bit more responsive.

It is a bit disappointing. Maybe Apple will bless us with HomeKit for macOS that has an Apple Homebridge API. I would buy a new MacMini just to act as the HomeKit controller.

I don't use an appleTV but the iPad to control HomeKit so it shouldn't be sleeping when I tell it to goodnight... i think it is some of the homekit devices that are. the ones that it 'forgets' to activate during shedule changes sometimes are all sorts of device makers so i am not sure it is one device in particular that is ignoring the command. good chance it is the homekit controller code itself just ***** up periodically.

In any case it should be smart enough to perform a few command retries if it detects an unresponsive device. in general that is the best practice design principle for controlling external devices over any protocol. things sleep, things miss commands, etc.

I assumed you have Hue accessories. Philips Hue is using the ZigBee protocol to communicate between the bridge and light bulbs.

Is HomeKit really worth it? If I were to remodel my house, I'd struggle to do more than replace the lights, door locks and thermostat that doesn't need changing as I used the timer function on it so it starts to heat the house before I wake up and return from work.

Am I missing something marvellous here?

I'm living in a flat in a city. So, it's easy to have a smart home without drilling through walls and such. Also, when I move out, I'll keep my stuff with me and can set it up pretty much anywhere.
