So it won’t register active minutes then if it's turning off heart rate!?

Welp, wouldn’t want to do without background heart rate recording so I guess I won’t be using this after all.

For days when you know there is going to be a long time between charges, it's a pretty nice addition - but normally just go full mode :)

That is the same with the new Ultra people rave about it will have 60 hours on low battery mode.
But it basically does nothing beside telling the time then :p

I still ordered a Ultra though.

So, cellular AW will not notify you of calls when iPhone is not present?? How does that make any sense?
Just underlines how draining cellular is and how small Watch batteries still are. And really a general indication of which sensors and features are the most taxing.

Yes, I get what you're going at, that it will render your cellular Watch almost useless.

But I don't think there's much to gain from low-power mode on an AW if cellular isn't disabled. And I don't think Apple wants users to use their Watches in constant low-power mode. It's a compromise due to the small batteries in AW, not how you're supposed to experience your AW.

I think only the Ultra would get something useful from LPM with fully enabled cellular. But that's just speculation.

watchOS 9 introduces a new Low Power Mode for the Apple Watch Series 4 and later that is designed to extend battery life by disabling or limiting some features and sensors while enabled, such as the always-on display and background heart rate monitoring.

In a new support document published today, Apple detailed specific features that are disabled or affected when Low Power Mode is turned on:For safety purposes, Apple says Fall Detection continues to work in Low Power Mode.

To enable Low Power Mode, swipe up on the watch face to open Control Center, tap on the battery percentage button, and turn on Low Power Mode.

When an Apple Watch's battery percentage drops to 10%, a Low Power Mode alert asks users if they want to turn on the feature. Low Power Mode turns off automatically when an Apple Watch is charged to 80%, unless users manually turn it on for a set number of days.

Apple says users can have Low Power Mode turn on automatically when they begin a workout, with metrics such as heart rate and pace still measured.

Apple notes that when Low Power Mode is enabled without your iPhone nearby, and you open an app that requires a data connection, Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity will resume so that the app can function properly, which can cause "significant battery consumption."

watchOS 9 was released today as a free software update for the Apple Watch Series 4 and later. The new Low Power Mode is separate from the Apple Watch's existing Power Reserve mode that only displays the clock when enabled.

Lost me at turning off Cellular & wi-fi connections 😡

So, if I understand correctly, the built-in Workouts app continues to record a workout even if the watch goes into low-power mode? If so, this alone absolutely makes me want to upgrade.
But you lose your cellular connection, which is a no, no for me as I don't take my phone when training

It underlines how Apple have done zilch with the batteries for the last 4 years, hence more people deciding not to buy it, I suspect they didn't do anything with the 8 series, to push the sales of Ultra, which for me is a noon, because it's Ugly and too big 😏

Thank you for buying the new Apple Watch 8 and all its exciting new features. Don't forget, if you use it at all you'll probably have to engage the new 'Low Power Mode' which renders these new features redundant and gives you the warm glow of battery efficiency and the nostalgia of having the equivalent of your Apple Watch 3 back.

When engaging low power mode you are encouraged to say the words 'Chewie, we're home' to increase said nostalgia.

Am I the only one who would like more granular control over what's disabled in low power mode? For example always on display is great, but with workout thrice a week I do not really need watch to detect the start.

This sounds like my perfect watch. Step count, notifications and extended battery life. If only apple brought something out similar to this with 7+ days battery life. One can dream.

You can already disable workout detection. Google will help you find it :)

Does "background heart rate" not include intentionally logging fitness apps? One of the reasons I want to save power is when mountain biking as Strava eats quite a lot, but I don't need it to do anything else, use WiFi, Cellular or have always on display when I purely want to use it as a fitness tracker for a few hours. So if I put it in low power mode but run Strava will it shut down all the uneccesasary features and messaging but strava will still record heart rate (as Strava isn't just doing general "background" heart rate), or will I get no heart rate with my Strava data?

Basically does it turn off all these general features running in the background, but I presume they still run if an app is specifically using them?

I never thought Low Power Mode was meant for everyday use. Like any other power saving feature of a device, it's meant to extend usage between long stretches without a charger.

As for granular control, most of these settings can be disabled manually to save battery life: cellular, wifi, workout detection, high/low HR notifications, fall detection, etc. The new Low Power Mode just takes care of the most battery intensive features in a single toggle and builds on it with auto reconnect to a data source when using an app that requires it.

Let's see how this works with my golf GPS app on AW. I'm crossing my fingers.

It would be nice for a option to turn back on in a hour or so, even when leaving this location.

Wouldn't do not disturb be similar to low power mode?

Like most uninformed people I jumped the gun and criticised the feature as useless, however just been to the Gym, used low power mode, listened to music and used the work out, app, at the end of an 80 min work out, the watch used only 10% of the battery, it's usually at least 25%, the only compromise was the lack of cellular (which I can live with) but I got my iMessages. Brilliant 😊

“Low Power Mode turns your smartwatch in to a conventional watch, and we think you’re gonna love it.”

Just like all the power saving guides for the earlier model phones that basically had you turn off every useful feature.

Hopefully next year S9 is a big upgrade. Hopefully it'll have a more power efficient 3nm SoC, and some of the Ultra's upgrades (brighter screen in particular)
