Apple has released a brand new ad called "Renewable Energy," which takes place entirely within the Messages app. The ad is focused on explaining how 100% renewable energy at Apple's data centers enables users to send and enjoy iMessages to and from friends.

The ad argues that since the tech behind iMessages is renewable and environmentally friendly, users are showing Earth "some love" by using the service. The ad ends with Apple's green-stemmed Earth Day logo and arrives just in time for Earth Day, which is April 22.

Powering your iMessages with 100% renewable energy - because our planet deserves our best thinking. #EarthDay 🌎 https://t.co/ze7rNObMGM - Tim Cook (@tim_cook) April 22, 2016

In 2013, Apple announced that its data centers were using 100% renewable energy. Worldwide, 93% of Apple's facilities run on renewable energy. Its new headquarters, Apple Campus 2, will also run on 100% renewable energy.

Apple is celebrating Earth Day by updating its retail stores' logos with green accents and providing retail employees with green shirts. The company is also promoting stores that run on 100% renewable energy with new signage.

Might just be me, but I feel like the average consumer's first thought when seeing this ad will be, "wait, all of my messages go to an Apple data center where they can read everything I send?"
I'd say it's the other way around. The average customer has virtually no clue that his data might be sent to somewhere. You could tell them that 50 chinese labourers are reading and sorting your messages, and they still wouldn't understand. If it was a real concern from people, then there won't be any "spying" involved with Google, Microsoft, Facebook, or anyone else because they'd be hated and boycotted by everyone.

Also, seems like Youtube changed its HTML5 player a bit.

Wait... so if I send a heart emoji via iMessage, I'm showing the earth some love.

But I've NEVER used that emoji before.

Does this mean I'm a bad person? :(

(In any case, I liked the video.)

Remember, iMessages have End-To-End encryption. They're more secure than the SMS/MMS messages that go through your carrier's data centers between your device and the person with whom you are communicating.

yeah but every time i do it, i have to hit "Try again"

Don't know about you but iMessage have never failed me..... unless I am in some deep basement with no internet connection

I would rather have my messages go there then to the mobile phone operators who share everything with everyone.

Funny ad. Makes it sound like sending an iMessage actually improves the health of the earth.

It's about not contributing on making it worse.

They're also saving the planted by extending the upgrade cycle to 3 years with the iPhone 7 because no one will buy it

Powered by eco-friendly RDF. ;)

The only thing running through the minds of consumers is, "Which cloud storage is free-est", or quite possibly, "Which one is already on my phone?"

I don't think people really make decisions on which service to use based on its green credentials. People hate paying for stuff like this because "it should be free". Which one is free, and which is most convenient? If you're an iPhone user, I suppose that's whatever Apple offers. If you're on an Android phone, I suppose it's Google Drive. You could download OneDrive or another alternative, but it's never as integrated.

Oh if iMessage and Apple's Data Center are environment friendly then why not open iMessage to android platform?
If people switch to iMessage from other messaging apps, it will make larger impact.
