You know I thought about this some, and the only thing to come to mind was I really don't care. What I care about is 3 or 4 way video chat. Why can't we get some meaningful functionality.

iMessage has features sms or mms doesn't. If you don't care for some of the features of iMessage I can understand why you want sms or mms; but I like iMessage.

Ok. But it does not work for me. It's not that I don't like the features. It's that they don't work for how I use my devices. Also since the majority of my friends use Android devices, the advantages of iMessage get thrown out the window anyway.

And the reality is that most people don't upgrade parts, so on the overall scale that aspect of it is essentially moot.
Wrong. People that are knowledgeable, upgrade parts accordingly. Having the option to upgrade is better than being forced into buying a whole new device you know.

So basically right--most people don't upgrade parts.

Wow this forum is negative. Great ad for one of Apples cloud services which actually works really well and the guy who has a bug is here, front and centre going 'NO!!'

yes, ignore the people that are constantly having issues with imessage. just tell them "you're messaging it wrong", right?

Most of my family and friends are on iPhone, so I get to take advantage of the integration with iOS.

This is great, but the reality is that Apple still has a long way to go. The most environmentally friendly way for Apple to operate would be to ensure that its devices are usable for as long as possible. That means no arbitrary software cut offs and machines that are designed such that they can be repaired and upgraded when possible. Recycling looks great on paper, but ensuring that devices last as long as possible is better for the environment.

So someone has an issue with a feature, which isn't unheard of at all when it comes to all kinds of features and devices (even beyond Apple), but what does that have to do with the particulars of this article and this discussion?

No. But this forum has gotten really depressing since around 2013. Best example is when the iPhone 6S ad Onion was reported here. It was a really good ad, and the first comment was 'what's the point of a 4K camera when the Apple TV doesn't support 4K'. It almost felt satirical. Instant negativity.

If you don't want 'petty bickering' can you also ban 'unnecessary negativity' as it's making me want to stop visiting a forum which used to be full of insightful observations and constructive criticisms.

i don't read this forum. i'm simply posting what i've experienced from imessage. just because entire forum is negative doesn't mean i can't express my dissatisfaction with my experience of the service.

there's no point in promoting a service that's good for the environment when it's not good for customers.

It is mine as long as I don't experience outages; which I haven't. I like to know the reliability of services I'm using.

But it is good for customers. Isolated incidents of people having some issues here or there (which happens with pretty much anything out there) doesn't necessrily mean anything in particular about that device or product.

isolated incidents? i'm not just talking about one issue. for example: everyone i've talked to, they can't seem to figure out how to force send as SMS. I have a brother that has an Android phone and an iPad. Everytime I type in the CELL PHONE NUMBER, it reverts back to their IMESSAGE EMAIL (their iPad device) account. After about 1 hour of figuring this crap out, I had to literally go into contacts and delete the imessage email from their contacts in order to force send as SMS. ridiculous. there was a period of 2 weeks where i kept sending texts to his number but didn't realize that he never got them because it kept going to his ipad that he rarely checks. absolutely infuriating.

also, my parents are old school. they like to send SMS replies through their email. it completely screws up the conversation since imessage seem to be confused as to the source of the SMS replies. so often times my parents send an SMS through email, it creates a separate thread (even if the original thread already had their sms email in the context). i check my brother's android phone and he seems to have consistent threads.

these issues are reproducible on both my iphone and my other brother's iphone. isolated? nope. also, google search imessage "ios 9" issues and you'll see half a million results. this service is far from perfect.

every android switcher I've talked to, I've had to explain the difference between green bubbles and blue bubbles. one big confusing mess. good for customers? not really.

lastly, my uncle switched out of ios to android, for about a couple of years, anyone that texted him never went to his android phone. it wasn't until he decided to get a new number to fix this issue (before Apple fixed this issue a couple of years later where a class action lawsuit was filed, yes a class action lawsuit, meaning this was not an isolated incident).

Yup, all fairly anecdotal things mostly around people not knowing something or not understanding something, with some issues here and there that are certainly not present for many others. Again doesn't say much really about something being bad when millions upon millions are using it just fine.

judging by the google suggestions and number of results, it's definitely a considerable amount of people coming across that issue.

while millions are using it just fine, millions have issues. and this is just one particular issue among many.

oh look, it happened again

Doesn't really seem to say anything about how many people are having issues. Suffice it to say that if enough people had issues (and we aren't even talking majority even) we'd be deep into constant long discussions about it all on sites like this one and even the more mainstream media.

Even the recent issue with links in Safari that got quite a bit of coverage (way more than iMessage issues that some expeience here and there have been getting) didn't affect the majority or even close to it.

No one is saying that there aren't people with issues of one type or another, just that it's nothing even remotely close to being some sort of a failed, bad, unpopular, or disliked feature/service, and is quite the opposite of all that overall.

only Apple has that statistic.

a 2 year old problem where it is accumulating 40 pages of responses/over half a million views and where people are STILL discussing it to even today.

there are other threads about the same issue as well that have quite a bit of views/replies

Right, not that unusual for issues that various people experience, which doesn't mean that many many more are not experiencing issues most of the time, and doesn't necessarily mean that the product/service itself is actually bad, unpopular, or disliked overall.

unpopular? i would never suggest that. service is built into every iphone, so no question it's popular

whether the service is bad/good, liked/disliked "overall" is derailing off the original point. original point i made is that the service is far from good from my own and as well as many other's experiences. it's fine if you disagree, but doesn't mean that my statement is completely off topic of this article.

You stated that there's no point in promoting a bad service and I pointed out that while that might be the case for some due to some issues or something similar, it's isn't for most, which means it's not a bad service (just that some people have issues with it, which applies to any product/service out there).

1. That's a big generalization of what I said
2. That isn't my main point (about promoting a bad service - not what I was originally discussing).
3. I think iMessage bad. Why does the mainstream media need to cover an "issue" before a product can be considered bad? Antennagate was covered by journalists everywhere and everyone was talking about it, but does that mean the phone was bad? Absolutely not. So, the "popularity" of an issue doesn't measure how good/bad a product is. It's about my opinion about this service. The fact that others experiencing the issues that I'm experiencing only confirms that this isn't some fluke.

Maybe you don't text with Android people, maybe you don't have contacts where people have more than one cell phone number, maybe you don't have older relatives that still send SMS from an email. That's fine, service probably works great for you and that's your opinion. But my usage covers larger use case scenarios, and that's where iMessage drops the ball in my opinion.

Anyways, I've said enough about this topic. Sorry but I'm going to be a jerk and not bother reading further replies since this discussion isn't going to change anyone's mind it looks like.
