Not once have i been able to take a photo using Stage Light (spotlights your face against a dark background) and it worked as advertised.

Honestly they look like crap, scratching my head why Apple would release this half-baked feature.

You're not fooling anyone, same with the fake depth of field mess. Ughhhh

I have an 8+ so I can use the same set of effects.
The original portrait mode that works on the 7+ as well is ok, I sometimes take good pictures with it and I printed some of them. Usually if you zoom in you can see the face has been cut from the background and something like hairs or a little pice of the ear is missing, but if you look at the picture from a distance it seems pretty good.
Sometimes I try portrait lighting effects, but I'd say I can get a good result 10% of the time at best. The b&w pic is really great, but only seldom works and I never printed any of those pictures. I know it is software related, so we can expect improvements in future versions of iOS, but now it is too frustrating.

I really don't get them spending so much money to advertise a half-baked feature that works so poorly.

It's still such a poor implementation, I hope they have something roadmapped to improve it.

Light is important in being set up first to take the correct shot. You can't have the tail wag the dog like this and expect it to be the same or, for that same matter, market it like that either.

I appreciate the intent, but the iphone generally colors skin tones (and many other things) yellow. Portrait mode works surprisingly well, while not perfect yet. The inaccuracy of the edges is more pronounced in the darkened background mode, but I have to bet this will improve over time, it will be interesting to see. These I forgive as the technology is still progressing, but the skin tones seem a simple fix.

Wait a minute, they're running an ad for a thing that has been in beta for several hundred years and still can't compete with a flippin' Google phone that has only one lens? Is this a late April 1st thing? o_O
