Maybe it your carrier? AP is significantly faster then using my chip card.
I would suspect the same, but that’s not where the failure point occurs for me. it’s after TouchID confirms fingerprint and my phone just sits at “hold near reader” and does nothing until i put it down and pull my card out. when it does work it’s fine. fast. instant until i hit the same tap through menus on the reader for a debit purchase. but as it’s the only place i shop that does accept apple pay (other big players are target and walmart who will die on their “maybe we’ll have our own payment system one day” hills) I gotta keep the wallet handy.

No, he's right, I tried it last night. Even if you do present your unlocked phone to the card reader, you still need to double-click the side button to trigger the FaceID authentication.

What about Touch ID though?

If only Apple Pay were actually accepted at any grocery stores I go to. I would love to use it...
Pretty much all grocery stores except Kroger owned ones- who made a stupid deal with Chase for Chase Pay.

All of the major groceries stores here in Canada accept Apple Pay. But I've noticed that once you cross the border in the U.S. it's largely hit or miss (mostly miss, from my limited time there in NYC).
Phoenix is pretty good penetration.

New York has a problem with cards in general, everywhere seems to have a minimum and a lot of street vendors seem to never have heard of Square or something.

SF that’s a whole different story. Everyone uses Square and has Apple Pay it seems.
