yes, but if I want to play Spotify, I have to say “the name of the song + on Spotify.” Is it a big deal in the grand scheme of things? No, but it‘s an annoyance that is unnecessary and can be easily solved. I love Apple, but they can loosen the grips a bit. Apple Music has matured a bit and has a decent userbase at this point.
Yeah I don’t like having to say “on Spotify”, but at least it works I guess.

While I appreciate this, it's still disappointing that they are not allowing music and map app defaults to be changed. Baby steps I suppose.

I wonder when this will happen since these are money makers, and Safari and Mail are not.

Does all actually sounds very reasonable to me.
Also, am I the only one who’s had to explain time and time again to family members that the Google search app is not a web browser?

Seriously. I know people who think Google IS the beginning and the end of the internet. If they want to visit Macrumors.com they

1) Open Chrome (after clinging on to IE until the very end)
2) type in google.com
3) Press enter and wait for it to load while staring at the screen like they see a cow dancing the Macarena
4) search for Macrumors
5) Press enter and wait for it to load while staring at the screen like they see a hamster dancing the Tango
6) Click macrumors at the top of the search results

It will happen when regulators compel Apple to allow it, whether explicitly or not.

And, like Safari and Mail, it is overdue.

I just hope they fix highlighting in the iPad and iPhone Books apps. Only works consistently with Pencil on iPad, finger is always off in relation to highlight. Must have to do with their new system wide text highlighting. Bugs me that they have either not noticed that themselves and/or are simply ignoring user feedback.

I doubt that will happen given Apple investment in Apple Music.

I’m unsure though why you’d need to change it? You can really only open music 2 ways. Tap on the app or ask Siri and Siri allows you to ask to play via Spotify?
There are other music apps that are great but otherwise cant be integrated to system so clunkier to use. There are still folks who do not enjoy streaming service and still buy songs from various sources.

Website support for safari render engine is sketchier than chrome and Firefox. God forbid, even IE renders websites better than Safari sometimes. Allowing default browser is definitely overdue and a very welcome move.

As for default music app, Apple has done some decent job in iOS 14 that third party music app is not as attractive as it was anymore, plus it starts to share experience between iTunes and iOS devices, which is a nice thing imo.

As for default Mail app, I am pretty much stuck to default one until Apple one day decides to enforce 2FA on every single account. It does ok job for whatever it’s worth, and does not annoy me as much. The lack of rules feature means Microsoft outlook on windows is still going to be my main email client.

I don't know if I'd use Google Maps, but because no other map app, to my knowledge, can take over the lock screen, Apple Maps is a must for me.

I will say, i do use Google Maps for two things.

  1. For the very few times that Apple Maps sends me to the wrong area/middle of nowhere. This has happened a couple times where i live. (Albuquerque NM) Mainly, the issue seems to be mislabeled shopping centers. Once, it tried to send me up a mountain.
  2. Store hours. Google seems to do better with this. At Least as far us updating.
As much as I loathe to, I'll be switching my default to Google Maps - Apple Maps is absolutely terrible here in Thailand.

No wonder they broke the mail app... so they could introduce third party default apps as a feature.

I'm sure people have their reasons for wanting apps other than the default, but for the life of me I can't think of anything that could make me prefer other options. What do other mail apps do that mail can't, and do you really use email that much that it is important to have a different app? Genuinely curious. I don't use email in my job very often and safari takes me to the pages I want to read without any fuss. Even keeps my bookmarks synced with my Mac. What else does it need to do? Are there features I'm missing out on by using the default apps?
For me, one thing is the fact I can see a badge showing thatbi have seen new messages but when I open up mail I have to wait for them to download. It may not be enough to switch but it’s an irritant I can do without;

If every browser is using WebKit how are they different than Safari? The only reason I have multiple browsers on my iOS devices is to get around the Washington Post and other sites that have a monthly limit on free articles.

Requirements look reasonable to me. I am so glad Apple is finally allowing this option. I like Safari but, Apple Mail will no longer be by default app on the phone or iPad. I wish that weren’t the case. For me, the stock mail app can’t be depended on with consistency.

I am the same way. I love Safari, but the stock Mail app is garbage. I have been using Spark and love it. Finally the "You need to setup the mail app" messages will go away.

At my company, we tend to push Chrome, but the majority of our customers still use IE/Edge, Safari and Firefox. Chrome is great, until it isn’t. We’ve been submitting the same bug reports to Google since Jan. and that issue still hasn’t been resolved, which directly impacts our customers using Chrome with our services. I personally use Brave and ProtonMail.

I am sure the Google lovers are giddy with anticipation. I like Apple Maps, especially in conjunction with the Apple Watch. Even though I hate Google, I am glad that Google lovers will get their chance soon.

This is the Apple Orchard Forum. I think you are lost. :p

I use TomTom which also provides the directions for Apple Maps. They always take me the exact same routes but TomTom's interface is far superior. Frankly I had hoped Apple would buy TomTom when they started to get heavy into maps.

I hate Google also. One day Google told me I may have an overdue bill and I realized they were reading my emails in order to be able to do that and that was the day I began my Degoogle adventure.

can’t you just use privacy mode to get around the limits?

My biggest reason is Apple's code quality, or lack thereof.

"When opening a URL, apps must navigate directly to the specified destination and render the expected web content without redirecting to an unexpected location."

I find this interesting.

Choice... As good as Apple privacy stuff is, they lack addon's and maybe some other privacy stuff.. No one size fits all..
There's nothing wrong with that, and in a world where everyone has a choce of default apps on a Mac, why shoul it be different on iOS?
