iOS 11 introduces an entirely revamped App Store that features a new "Today" screen for app discovery and separate sections for apps and games to make it easier to design content. It's a major change, and to highlight some of the new features, Apple today released a series of YouTube videos showing off the App Store.

The first video is almost 40 seconds in length and focuses primarily on the Today section of the App Store with its app recommendations, developer stories, tips and tricks for using apps, and Game of the Day and App of the Day.

Subsequent short videos are designed to show off some of the specific Today section features like the making of Monument Valley 2, the best apps for sneakerheads, and tips for karaoke-ing at home.

Apple puts a lot of focus on the iOS App Store in iOS 11, especially with its move to eliminate the App Store from iTunes on the desktop. The iOS App Store is now the sole portal for discovering and managing app content on iOS devices.

Apple updates the "Today" section of the App Store on a daily basis to introduce new content, and there continue to be detailed app and game recommendations in other sections of the App Store. To get the new App Store, iOS 11, released yesterday, is required.

Update: It appears Apple has temporarily pulled these videos from its YouTube channel.

Wondering if they are experiencing reduced App Store sales. A. There will be a learning curve. B. Today is not as immediately accessible as the Search Bar or many tiny icons of apps to click on.

Kinda wish they clustered like floating swirling clouds of apple watch-like groupings: where you touch is where you start drilling down to more-like-that. But with search bar on top, and with clear “Topics” button on bottom.

Lets see their numbers in 3-6m; sure they user tested this.

I don't like it, but I never really liked the old version either. I like having as many filters as possible all on the same page, so I can curate it according to my needs.

On another note, most of iOS 11 seems designed for iPhone X, and moving forward even the iPhone 8 will be an afterthought.

No more Free App of the Week?

They haven't featured the free apps of the week even once during the beta. My guess is that it's either going to be in tomorrow's 'Today' section or they ended it. We'll find out tomorrow I guess.

No more Free App of the Week?
They have it. I was on the GM a week before and it was at the top section of the "Apps" tab where is now flooded with ARKit apps since 12th September. Will probably be back after the introduction of the ARKit app is over.

That, and I want to be able to see the update size at a glance, don't want to have to dig for that info.

Same here. I made that request multiple times during the beta.
Assuming the size would actually be what's downloaded, as often enough that's not the case (due to delta updates and things of that nature).

The new App Store is complete trash. I say this not only as a developer, but actually as more of an App Store junkie. Instead of seeing dozens of new apps, and dozens more with a few swipes, I now get to see less than 1.5 apps per screen? And when I finally do click one of the full page images, I'm greeted by over two full screens of text before getting to the app? *incredulous*

I guess the upside of not being able to discover apps is that I won't waste as much money on the App Store. o_O

IAP had pretty much killed the App Store for me anyway. ow I only get apps when they are mentioned elsewhere. I never just "go shopping" on the App Store like I used to. Apple just doesn't get commerce the way Amazon does. And that includes the online Apple Store. SMH.

They gonna do a video explaining why the text headers are SO BIG.

I really don't need to see Messages in gigantic font and white space that takes up 1/5th of the screen (SE).

It's totally silly IMO. And yeah the app store is a fiasco and a half. The little heartfelt stories highlighting developers that happen to be attractive is so cheesy.

I like it. :) The App Store was way past due for an update. Easy enough to click on Apps and then select a category if I want to do serious browsing.

I guess you missed the "apps" tab.

I also can’t stand the new App Store design. The entire thing is an example of how to waste as much screen real estate as possible. Huge tiles, massive text, unused white space... the list goes on. And what’s with the renewed focus on ridiculous apps and subjects? Today’s App Store Pro Tip — “Shoefies are the new selfies.” Yeah, no thanks.

I left that unwieldy place a few months ago. What a confusing interface. No way to find anything. No multiple Find criteria. Scrolling, scrolling, scrolling...
I don't see what Phil accomplished here. OK, he needs more physical movement - then let him leave his car in the garage. Scrolling hardly helps him - and merely annoys us.
But credit where credit is due: suppose the bungy jungy soundbites were curated by a specialists team that were peeled from their surfboards by Eddy Cue...
