How are you comparing? Is it obscene that a bike can cost more than a car? That coffee beans can cost more than kidney beans? That a pound of caviar can cost more than a a pound of the fish it came from?

Yes it is obscene that a phone cost more or equal to a Macbook Pro.
It is obscene that a bycicle would cost more than a car (i do not know which).
Comparing technology it is plain simple. It is technology/product. Compared food does not even compare.

Great story and cinematography using such a common tool that many of us have in our pocket every day.

From what I've read, while these ads are shot with an iPhone there is also more elaborate video equipment used - stabilizers, dollies, etc. Not something you'd have in your pocket.

The video... is simply fantastic. I live a few thousand miles away from home. Woke up, saw this video while still in bed. And my eyes are moist and I’m missing home :(

Although I'm not Chinese, I too loved the movie. So much so that I wanted to send it to friends and co-workers in China. But then I realized it was a YouTube video .... and ... YouTube is owned by Google ..... which .... is blocked in China. So, unless my friends and co-workers have an illegal VPN, they won't be able to watch the movie. So sad.....

Could you explain which part of my reply is hateful?

On the topic of New Year, Chinese New Year and Lunar New Year are not the same and cannot be used interchangeably.
By promoting the term Chinese New Year, Apple is ignoring a huge amount of Asian countries celebrating Lunar New Year.
I can reasonably believe Apple is favoring China.

Also, citing Wikipedia does not make your argument more credible than others.

It's a commercial targeting Chinese audience. The people in the film are celebrating Chinese New Year. What part of this do you not understand and need to take offense?

Indeed the festival referred to in the short film is the Chinese variant of the Lunar New Year. However, it can come off as ignoring other countries celebrating their own Lunar New Year holidays by referring it simply as "Chinese". My personal suggestion is that it should have been called the "Chinese Lunar New Year (Holidays/Festival)".

This type of "favouritism" is abound everywhere, especially in American media publications that report news as if the US is the only country in the world. I appreciate the educational moments above where some saw this as being a Lunar event and others clarified it's focused on Chinese. Nothing wrong with what Apple put together here, and they are not "ignoring" their other customers. I don't think so.

Looks like they used some type of depth-of-field adapter for the iPhone (maybe Beastgrip) and external lenses.

Definitely not pure iPhone XS.

Hey Apple if you're listening if you really want to help out cinematographers add an additional ultra-wide angle lens for dramatic 2.39:1 cinematography (then later add a 100mm+ telephoto lens), add a standard lens/filter mount so we can mount external lenses & filters quickly, and add a built-in 2/4/8 stop ND filter.

Also those drone footage can't be iPhone, 99% DJI drones...

Apple is trying to please China again because it's Lunar New Year, not Chinese New Year. Every Asian knows it.

Yes and no. My wife's Vietnamese and always asserts this (before handing out red envelopes with Chinese characters all over them).

I lived in Japan for 10 years... never saw it celebrated and they called it 'Chinese New Year'.

Lotsa European countries think the moon is important and will have various moon festivals...etc.

So every Asian? I didn't realise 'Asians' owned the moon and my experience is that every country within Asia is different (with different people, languages, cultures...etc). I suspect there's more to it than you say and IMO more likely than not using fireworks, dragons, Chinese writing and red envelopes to celebrate the new moon is very much a Chinese thing. Sure the event itself is a phenomenon of nature but when you celebrate it in a way that is identical to the Chinese... somebody decided to hand out communist red envelopes (marked with Dragons + Chinese characters) that are full of money and um. Who would that have been?

Is portrait mode for video already available? Isn’t this false advertising?

How did they achieve this kind of depth of field?! I think they should mention the external hardware / software which was used to make these kind of videos..

"The entire film was shot on a iPhone XS with an incredible cinematic look which was achieved by utilizing the DOF MK2 adapter paired with the Beastgrip Pro in the majority of the scenes. This is another example of incredible creativity and professionalism that truly shows the capabilities of the iPhone to tell a story and another step in the evolution of the #phoneography movement! We are very proud to be apart of this project!"

It seems that iPhones are overpriced, Tim cook?
What happened, iPhones prices were so expensive that you needed to drop them?
Or now, late, you are realizing that a cheaper iPhone will sell more and help you get more market share?

Why price drops are only in China and Japan?
[doublepost=1548397099][/doublepost]

iPhones sales are only thwarted by the obscene prices and Apple's greed. It is kind of ridiculous that an iPhone cost the same or more than a Macbook Pro.

No price drops here in Japan.
And we pay much more Apple products in here too

a kid in China sold his kidney to pay for an iphone 4.... now he has to sell both his kidneys and a lung to do the same...

Oh, please!
Somebody in some western media said that. Can you verify if it is true?
And, by the way, in, so called “1st world countries” you can get raped in the park in the evening, stabbed with a knife for a small amount of money in your valley.

Tired of reading this unrelated rubbish on here.

It was nice little film. If you are determined to make a good think, even with a minimum of gear things are possible nowadays.

Netflix should make a documentary "Making a Suicidal" about workers jumping from the Foxconn building.

I see, the suicides are common in other countries and companies but no problem there.

Why do people have a need to turn a forum about a feel good film to horror?

Interesting, so I have to sell my 60MP Hasselblad for a Sony ?

Why does Huawei sell more than Apple ?
Obviously DSLRs get more light. Laws of physics So I would choose an 8 Megapixel dslr over any phone camera. Huawei sells more since they release junk at commodity prices. So does Samsung. Apple sets their standards higher. That’s why even in 2018 I recommend an iPhone 5S or 6.

You should broaden your view.
The latest Huawei Mate 20 Pro and X are technically a little bit more advanced than Apples Xs iphones -- usb-c 3.1, dual frequency GPS, pen input, desktop mode inclusive mouse support and 4k monotor support over usb-c 3.1 -- and and and.
You need to check the reality. Huawei does not need someone to produce their phones they do it by them self and they know what they do.

I think that there is not available hardware or software to fake those depth of field. It is simply shot on a DSLR or a Cinematic camera, the only part shot with an iPhone are the photos at the end in my opinion

In fact, there is available hardware for this. I'm the same page, you'll see someone quoting Beastgrip. They produce variety of lenses, including DOF ones for the iPhones and you can tell indeed it's still an iPhone because the edges of the video are kinda distorted. Downside of the DOF adapter.

What body part has to be sold for another phone manufacturer for a kid in China?
Maybe he should use a bit of common sense & not buy new Apple products! And maybe save some money from a job . If someone did this for a Ferrari would anyone blame Ferrari?
