iPhone‌ Game of the Year is “Sky: Children of the Light by thatgamecompany” ?????? I laughed so hard, these are such cherry picked awards. It’s definitely not the most popular game. I call foul.

There’s no way that game beats out MarioRun ! With 2.85 million times downloaded just on the day of its iOS release and grossing 5 million dollars.

So how these awards are actually determined undermines reality.

Sky is a really amazing game. I’m not shocked that it won.

I am thrilled to see Serif Labs get this well-deserved recognition from Apple for Affinity Publisher.

Serif's Affinity Designer for the iPad is elegant, well-designed and powerful. When someone recites the tired refrain of Apple's so-called lack of innovation, I think of my iPadPro, Pencil and Affinity Designer (and other wonderful drawing and design apps like Procreate and Concepts) and just feel grateful.

At this point, even Microsoft looks much more creative and innovative than Apple -- especially when you need TOOLS to get WORK done. But unlike Apple, Microsoft even caters to the desires of GAMERS through their Xbox ecosystem. And they're not trying to be Hollywood or rock stars - they still know that they're a tech company.
This comment won’t age well...
Microsoft has been putting a lot of effort into “Project xCloud”, currently billed as an upcoming game streaming service.
How long do you give it before they follow fellow tech companies, Amazon & Apple, into offering their own tv streaming service?
They’re currently building the delivery system... & if it can push games, it can certainly stream 4K video.
My personal feeling is that by year end, 2020 we hear something from Microsoft about a (likely XBOX branded) streaming service.

What the Dickinson? I don’t think you have to be older to recognize good music.
Then give it a listen!

It’s a bit too pop (well, “edgy” pop) for my taste, but I think she’s not bad at all.
Kinda like this generation’s Lady Gaga, IMO.
Certainly not a musical genius, per se... but capable of writing some catchy memorable songs that buck the mainstream just enough to capture both mainstream & fringe appeal.
It’s a good strategy. I wish her success & don’t begrudge her this award.

Where else would they want to go at this point? It's not an engineering company anymore (if it --ever-- was one), there are no innovative hardware products coming out of Cupertino anymore and now that Sir Yve's gone, they even lost the creative mind behind their graphics/industrial design department. They no longer know how to build cars, so they focus on selling gasoline (read: content) instead.

This brings up a couple of points:

During Steve Jobs’ tenure Apple made it clear that their focus is the intersection of several discursive fields: “It is in Apple’s DNA that technology alone is not enough— it’s technology married with liberal arts, married with humanities, that yields us the results that make our hearts sing.”

Visual media is well within the boundaries of liberal arts and humanities. Apple is trying to duplicate the success of Pixar with their own branding.

Regarding Jony Ive, I don’t recommend getting caught up in that particular facet of celebrity worship. It’s Apple’s design *teams* that should get the credit for successful products, not one individual.

I didn't know that thatgamecompany made another game! Their Playstation games were amazing. I will definitely check that one out.

Oh Apple , please don’t. Don’t ridicule yourself by pretending to become an arbiter of artistic taste. It’s laughable and pathetic. Focus, focus, focus. Stick to what Steve Jobs wanted Apple to be , making technology that is delightful to use ( not that you particularly succeeded at it recently, but at least keep trying )
But...but...they can make a significant contribution to the awards ceremony industry!

stopped wasting time on appstore games a long time ago. they are all now reskinned microtransaction piles of crap copies of each other. no matter which new game you try, someone else has already released it a few months before it.

Still good games there if you're willing to wade through the trash. Toucharcade is a pretty good source.
