In a support document updated today, Apple says customers who have an Apple Watch Ultra or another larger Apple Watch model with a 44mm, 45mm, or 49mm case size might need to adjust the angle of the MagSafe Duo Charger or lay it completely flat in order to ensure the charger makes a proper connection with the Apple Watch.

If an Apple Watch Ultra still won't connect reliably to the MagSafe Duo Charger, Apple says to try removing the watch's band before placing the watch on the charger.

As noted by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman last week, the Apple Watch Ultra is not included in the list of devices compatible with the MagSafe Duo Charger, likely due to its larger 49mm case size and bulkier design making it a poor fit. On the contrary, the new Apple Watch Series 8 is listed as compatible, as are all Apple Watch SE models.

Priced at $129, the MagSafe Duo is a foldable mat with both a MagSafe charger for iPhones and an Apple Watch magnetic charging puck. Apple released the accessory in late 2020, prior to the existence of 45mm and 49mm Apple Watch models. Note that the MagSafe Duo Charger cannot fast charge the Apple Watch Ultra, Series 8, or Series 7.

Clearly the accessories division is not privy to the new product release calendar. Apple should relax it’s internal secrecy and at least give the accessories team a vague idea of what’s in the pipeline to ensure that things are compatible with new Apple products a year later.

MagSafe Duo is a marvelous product but outdated and in need of update. At the very least, it should be redesigned to properly accommodate for bigger camera bump on the newer iPhones (13 and 14 series), fast charging for Apple Watch 7 and newer, and proper support for Apple Watch Ultra. While at it, the Lightning connector should be replaced with USB-C, allowing customers to travel with only the USB-C cables.

Just because I have to be that guy, you can't use, "On the contrary..." in the sentence. You're not arguing against anything Apple said. Use, "However..." in the article.

I would've thought the Ultra would be in development when the MagSafe Duo was released?

Same thing with the 13 Pro and 14 Pro not sitting perfectly flat on the MagSafe side of the charger.

I've always been a fan of this product, though I don't use it day to day. I've kept one purely for travel purposes. Feels overkill given the price, but its so nice having a little folding setup like this with a single wire to charge my phone + watch.

Yup, if they've been working on the Ultra "for years", you think they would have accounted for this. Goofs like this are embarrassing and not environmentally-friendly! Shame on Apple.

Wouldn’t that have required making the Duo larger despite not having the Ultra out and the Ultra not being geared toward the mass market? That would have been very wasteful. Why not just say “shame on apple” for not making every case on the shelf Max sized and then filling in the empty space with extra silicone for the smaller phones?

Ooof. This is an embarrassing and confusing mistake. What happened to “it just works?”
OR, thank you apple for giving us a FREE way to use the charger that was already on the market instead of having to buy a newly designed one for a product that wasn’t even on the drawing board when the charger was created.

It's a marvelous product except all the parts that make it more like a really expensive knock off. 🤣

Great. Now make the thing bloody affordable because otherwise it’s useless.
