Apple today shared a trailer for Submerged, its first scripted film designed for the Apple Immersive Video experience on the Vision Pro headset.

Announced back in July, Submerged is a short film that's set in World War II, and it follows a group of sailors that are struggling to survive a deadly torpedo attack. It was created by Austrian filmmaker Edward Berger, who directed 2022 movie All Quiet on the Western Front.

Apple has not provided details on the length of Submerged, but most Apple Immersive Video content is on the shorter side. Apple has been regularly adding Immersive Video to the Vision Pro since the device came out last February. The immersive content is in 3D, and is meant to make the viewer feel like they are part of the scene.

Apple Immersive Video content can be viewed in the Apple TV app in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, France, Germany, Japan, Singapore, the U.K., and the U.S. Users in China can watch the content through the Migu Video and Tencent Video apps.

Submerged is set to premiere on the Vision Pro on Thursday, October 10.

"Short Film" so like 5 minutes long? What happened to those rumors that the Godzilla show was gonna be released in a version for Vision Pro?

Kind of funny how they always highlighted the potential of sports being provided in a never before seen experience when not even Apple with their trillion dollar can release something longer than 10 minutes. 90 min of soccer? Never gonna happen

I heard this whole project was under water.
Given the cost of the Vision Pro it's not surprising. When they come out with a version that's in the realm of affordability maybe it would do better.

I'm thinking $1499 given Apple products are generally at a premium. What price do the rest of you think Apple should sell a base-level Vision Pro headset?

So is this media in 3D or 360?

I think the ideal media would be 360 3D but that would be a massive bitrate.

As a former submariner, I look forward to the film. Trailer looks awesome.

A product still looking for a reason. Quite pathetic.

I think it has a reason, but not in the consumer market at its price. However, for commercial use where costs are a lot less of a concern it might be more viable; for example in sports to let a QB work through multiple progressions along with a sensor equipped football to all the QB to see throws; or for remote inspection situations where you remotely walk through an area.

I'm think sub 1000. One option would be to partner with sports streaming services where the headset could be marketed like phones are; reduced price for a multi-year subscription commitment. Such a deal would help solve the no-content limiting sales and low sales limiting content development.

Yeah, I was thinking sort of the same thing. Maybe a media provider could subsidize the headset in exchange for a Apple Vision media subscription service.

Sub $1000 would be great, but it could take Apple a while to trim the price from $3500 down to < $1000 without cutting enough corners where the headset would suck.

I was surprised the Apple headset was a computer in itself. Maybe if they made it so our iPhones would do all the heavy lifting so that it would reduce the price enough to make it in the realm of affordability for most iPhone users. Since we're carrying around an iPhone already, it could also reduce the bulk to carry around a Vision Pro headset.

Maybe not never but looking at what it takes to make a production of an NFL or MLB game, it's huge huge money and tons of existing investment. I'm not as familiar with soccer so maybe it would be less expensive.

But this is what I worry about with Apple. Was it really worth all they sunk into the car? Will it really be worth sinking a billion dollars into upgrading sports cameras and all the associated infrastructure just to prop up Vision Pro? Was it worth it even making Apple TV+?

Maybe yes to all those if they are ready to really stick it out for the long term, but a lot of it just seems like a distraction.
