I’ve been watching nature documentaries for decades and American-made nature documentaries are so dumbed down. Turning the trials and tribulations of our fellow living beings into little anthropomorphic, Disney-esque dramas.

Watching this trailer is like watching “Wind in the Willows”. I’m surprised the toad crossing the road isn’t wearing a tiny waistcoat. But you are a grown up! Watch some David Attenborough, or some Werner Herzog, whilst the kids are watching this.

It’s true what Lou Reed said in “Last a Great American Whale”:

Well Americans don't care for much of anything
Land and water the least
And animal life is low on the totem pole
With human life not worth more than infected yeast

Americans don't care too much for beauty
They'll **** in a river, dump battery acid in a stream
They'll watch dead rats wash up on the beach
And complain if they can't swim

They say things are done for the majority
Don't believe half of what you see and none of what you hear
It's like what my painter friend Donald said to me
"Stick a fork in their ass and turn them over, they're done"

I largely agree, and I'd say most genres of documentaries and factual TV. Which is a shame, because the US is so far ahead in the fields of science and filmmaking, it should really excel at this sort of stuff. But obviously, it’s production companies pandering to the general public, making documentaries “accessible to all”, so to speak.

I’d say one of the grand exceptions is Ken Burns / PBS documentaries, which I find exceptional. And Peter Coyote, I could listen to him read out a grocery list and be thoroughly entertained.

It seems like at some point in the not too distant past, a gritty bunch of nature photogs risked life and limb to gather all the footage for every nature documentary that will ever be made. I've literally seen the same footage 1,275,639,784 times. The only difference is the narrator. When they can't get Sir David, it's always some rando actor/actress. But the footage is always the same. In fact, I'd bet at least a dollar that the footage of the Peacock Spider in Tiny World trailer is some of this exact same footage with Rudd's voice over.

To be fair, it won't stop me from watching Tiny World. I love nature shows.
Great now you’ve made me want to see a documentary about nature photographers!

True. I know we're being lighthearted here, but if you're really interested I say check out Tales by Light on Netflix. It's an Australian docu-promotion in conjunction with Canon. Stunning visuals and nice insights regarding the photographer's mindset.
Thanks! Yeah I’d like to see how these people work. So often I look at an incredible photo or video footage and wonder “How the heck did the photographer get that”?

Dammit Apple! Paul Rudd??!!?? You missed a perfect opportunity to spice up the nature documentary by getting Zefrank1 to narrate. Yes, yes he does a dead on impression of Morgan Freeman as well.

Yeah, big fan of Zefrank1 as well.
